If you want more "learning type" videos. Go back about 4 or 5 years when Donut had a guy named Bart doing videos where he explained how every part of the car works. I think it was either called How It Works or Science Garage. That guy broke down and explained every part to it's most basic form so that I thought I could repair every part of my car myself, lol. He was the reason I subscribed to Donut. I truly miss that part of this channel. This video sort of reminded me of the science garage videos. Quick tip to save the engines: WRX engines don't have baffles in the oil pan, while STI engines do. When tracking a subaru, the oil shoots towards the outside of the turn (towards the head, because of the horizontal layout of the boxer engine), starving the oil pump leading to premature rod bearing failures. It's a quick and easy upgrade to swap out the oil pan for one that has baffles, and it solves the issue (aftermarket, or STI pan). (It's not an issue with city driving, but the long high-speed turns at the track make this mod a requirement to be somewhat reliable)

If you’re going to replace stock just get a KillerB kit or something with better pickup tube as well and usually more oil capacity.
@roblucchetti2993
@roblucchetti2993 Жыл бұрын
This happens in a lot of cars, Honda suffers from the same thing, that's why when i built my civic, a baffled oil pan was high on the list of items that went in. Pro tip: Buy a baffled pan with baffles welded in. After-market kits that make you rivet or screw into your pan, then seal the holes ALWAYS leak. spend the loot for baffled pan. Once of prevention is worth $10,000 of cure

As soon as I heard it running I was like "yep, spun bearing... piston is traveling too far up the bore and hitting the head"... Confirmed at 9:01 😔 You can see the part of the head near the bottom of the screen has a distinct ring of new-looking metal where the piston has beaten the carbon build-up right off the head surface. Didn't really need to go any further than a noise test to know what killed this engine, but hey... it was fun to watch these boys smash their fingers 😅

Would you happen to know if the newer sti oil pans will work on a 2016 wrx
@FoxMacLeod2501
@FoxMacLeod2501 Жыл бұрын
@@WillemDodd @Kxngs If you don't find the information you want on the part manufacturer's website, I would recommend searching one of the many WRX owners' forums and message boards. You can use Google to search within a website: just enter the website URL, then a space, followed by your search terms. From my basic Subaru knowledge, WRXs have used the completely redesigned FA-series engines since like 2014, while the STIs still run the old EJ-series engines. They're mostly not interchangeable as far as I know. So, my educated guess, to answer your question, is: No. I highly doubt the oil pan from a "newer" STI will fit a 2016 WRX. But my big tip is: don't rely on KZbin comments when you're trying to buy car parts.

Absolutely, and even then you need to be mindful of it. I watched something similar happen to Pastrana, who keep in mind, was driving a Vermont SportsCar built STi. Baffles, dry sump, all that. If anyone knows how to build a Subaru it's those folks. He went off near our spectator point at a rally, and the car was leaning over a bit to one side in the ditch. Once a sweep vehicle came through and got him pulled out, he immediately went hard on the throttle once the engine turned over. Sure enough, about a minute later exhaust sounds in the distance abruptly stopped. Then 20 min later he came walking back up the road with his co-driver Beavis. Asked them if they went off again "nope, pretty sure we blew it up". Word got out later when the mechanics and engineers got a chance to tear into it that it was an oil starvation issue, likely due to the car sitting on its side in the ditch and then immediately given WOT. I think there's a video here on KZbin as part of Subaru's "Launch Control" series that has in car footage of that debacle playing out.

Before assembly you would need to change every bearings and make sure to redo the cylinders honing because right now its a ring file, 90 degres hash, should be 35 to 45 degres. Mesure your pistons and cylinders after doing so. That engine still seems fine. We can see that it had piston dust on the cylinder head from that gray tint. Test for valves leakage with compressed air from the intake and exhaust and brake cleaner in the chamber, there should be no bubbles. The plugs looked fine. Nice video keep it up!!!

I don't have any experience with EJ engines, but I have a huge amount of experience with the earlier EA engines. EA engines hate thin oil at high RPM, they spin rod bearings with it. All I will run in an EA71 or EA81 is Aeroshell 15w50 aircraft oil. For a few reasons. #1 is it "sticks" inside the bearings. I have taken engines that have not run in weeks and they still have oil in the rod and main bearings. No startup noise whatsoever. #2 is it's an ashless oil, it doesn't create deposits when it burns. Very little in terms of cylinder wear on these engines running this oil. #3 is the TCP (tricresyl phosphate) antiwear additive. It prevents scoring on the camshaft and acts as an antirust agent as well. #4 is the level of protection at high temperature. Even above 275 degrees oil temperature, the extreme pressure capability of the oil is well over 100,000 psi. Never had an EJ but that's what I would run for oil. Also runs excellent in big block Mopar engines and 1950s Early Hemi engines. Compatible with leaded fuel as well.

Thanks for the informative comment. I never even thought of using aircraft oil in a car engine. this is normally only an issue with earlier models like 02-05 (I believe they have 06-07 despite what was said in the vid) due to the shape of the oilpan. It's a crap shoot. I'm betting the block wasn't decked in the rebuild. Subaru blocks warp just as bad as the heads when over heated. A good rule of thumb when rebuilding a Subaru engine is to look at the knock sensor. If it's melted just toss the entire block. It's most likely warped to the point where it'll give you a deceptive look of bad rings and bearings at the same time. You could end up putting good internals in a bent block and repeat the entire process again.

Can we all agree that subaru does pretty good with manufacturing a motor that can be worked on without taking to much time, with only a couple to a few hours he had the engines stripped entirely down
@AlDim000
@AlDim000 Жыл бұрын
No. Spark plugs alone are a 2 hour job that requires removal of the secondary air pump and tiny, tiny hands. Basically anything that's on the sides of the engine is a huge pain to service. Also, removing the intake manifold requires disassembling every single thing on top of the engine and takes several hours. Taking the engine out and taking the short block apart may be relatively quick, but it is significantly more difficult to rebuild than inline 4-cylinder engines and requires highly specialized skills, knowledge, and equipment. The only thing we can all agree on is that Subaru makes absolute trash engines which are extremely prone to catastrophic mechanical failures such as rod knock, ringlands failures, headgasket issues, etc. Many of their engines tend to have uneven cooling (pretty well every engine with unequal headers tends to stress one cylinder more than all the others), drink oil quicker than a rotary thanks to excessive blow by, have oil pickup failures, and on top of all that they are very expensive to make decent power reliably. In conclusion, don't get a Subaru. That's from a Subaru owner.

@@AlDim000 Exaggerating much. My brother who barely bought his stock STI recently was able to change his sparks within 30-40min. I'd expect 1 hour MAX unless you're really not mechanically inclined... /shurgs

Number 3 always goes first. As soon as I heard Rodney Knocking, I knew it was at number 3. You can prevent this in future by fitting a baffled sump. You can buy inserts reasonably cheaply, and they're pretty straightforward so easy enough to fabricate if you're so inclined.

Yeah, definitely oil starvation and not taking a freshly rebuilt motor to a track day. Yep, makes total sense.

It’s a coin flip if you abuse it. I rarely hear someone complain about blowing up their stock WRX.

What I’ve seen is it depends on the owner maintenance. I blew my headgaskets at 245k miles on the original engine of mine. But I was young and dumb and ignore the overheating issues. Some guys I’ve seen don’t even know how to change their own oil.

@@Walterrinho yeah, my opinion are purely observational as I never owned any Subaru, and I would agree that maintenance probably played a huge role

@@justinedzard to be honest that applies to any car, even my Toyota Tacoma needs the coolant changed because it could overhear and blow the headgaskets. That’s an issue of lack of maintenance since some people drive Tacoma’s many years and miles without ever changing the coolant.

Notes I've noticed so far after dealing with subarus for years. These are the usdm 06-07 body style not 2005. Also the hi car has impreza seats in it, instead of wrx seats. The last video showed the front knuckle mounting for the struts. The 05+ STI knuckle mounting holes are .5" farther apart. Just observations. Keep up the good content.

Agree here, but I believe the HI car was a "TR" (tuner ready) model, which had the impreza seats and flat black side mirrors
