I absolutely need a three man panel to make a final ruling on a recent golf event between myself and three buddies. Fairways, Perez, and Cold Cuts would be sufficient. We recently agreed to a best ball 9 holes with an allowed "breakfast ball" on the first tee, and one additional late breakfast ball on any other tee box before the end of the round. Going into the final hole tied, our best golfer popped up his drive on a 370 yard par four, but was still only about 130 yards from the hole. He SELECTED to hit his breakfast ball and pulled it out of bounds to the left. He then claimed that his second could be construed as a provisional against the natural law of breakfast balls, hit his first, and subsequently won the hole and the match. My contention is that once you have selected the breakfast ball option, you must play the breakfast ball option. I've requested rulings from USGA and Royal & Ancient (letters forthcoming) but wanted your panel to take a stab at this one. Thoughts and Ruling?
