The Off Grid Family

Күн бұрын

Of all the battles we have faced since living off grid, this is the worst. Having run out of water earlier this year, we've dedicated all of our summer to solving the problem once and for all. Here's how we're getting on.
If you are interested in living off grid but don't know where to start, why not have a look at www.theoffgridfamily.co.uk
Thanks for watching

Hi everyone 🙂Sorry for being so bad at replying to comments on this video. We were so unwell over the weekend that it took us until Monday evening to even check the video had gone out on schedule! We are on the mend now though and hoping to get on top of comments soon. Thanks for your support. It's very much appreciated, as always.

Absolutely love what you guys have achieved. Just purchased a plot in Lincolnshire on which I have sited a static, also looking to go off grid as much as possible. Looking at my first solar set up right now and seeing your set up have convinced me to go with the Victron equipment with solar trackers for the bifacial panels. Keep up the great work.

Oh, I do wish we lived closer.. I think our families would get along well. My husband does building work (plumbing, carpentry, electricity, etc, etc.) We’ve got four children (ages 8 through almost 17) I’m a keen new gardener and love the homesteading ideals. I bake sourdough bread and make jam. My husband’s family had agricultural land and some animals when he was a child/teenager so I ask him a lot of questions. I remember one time I asked his (very shy) mum how do they know the cow is in heat. That was awkward. 😬 Anyway.. Wish we had at least some resemblance of what homestead communities are like in the US. All the best, from London.

When you come to the next sizeable project Fraser, please reach out pal. You’ve just shown what it’d be like climbing the tallest tree ever with bare feet and hands 😩 How you kept going, I don’t know. Oh, hang on…. You’re a go getter👏👍 Brill job 👌

Ever thought of using a routerweight, I use it to tear up my back garden for plants, it’s pretty easy to use, as long as you read the instructions it should be safe to use, just don’t go in front of it and dont be irresponsible with how you move it around

Wow that did look like hard work. It must have felt like a losing battle when laying the underlay and the wind moving it, but it looked amazing when you had finished. Hope you managed to catch the very rainy weather we have been having lately x

The creation of ponds is a great way to store water and improve your lands value and fertility. It also attracts wildlife. We are planning to enlarge ours, add a separate pond to recirculate water and put trout in it. Drinking water ? I would suggest submerged concrete tank's as one method. Combining a solar panelled roof with rain water collection is certainly a big part of our water supply. Hope your dew pond work's out well.

With what a big project that is, I feel ill just watching you as I 100% understand the frustration of trying to balance life when you have children!! Well done!

It certainly makes projects slower but it's important to us that they get lots of time with us when we are not at work and that they get to be as involved as possible in the projects we are doing. Grace particularly loves it. Albie is still a bit too small!

Mate why on earth did you not ask your viewers for advice, a million years ago when we lined ponds if the budget allowed we spread sand to protect the liner but usually we just spread old unwanted carpet cost nowt and did a great job of saving the liner. also saved time energy and our backs. Dont be afraid to ask on big projects where money is involved there are bound to be people watching with experience who can help.

So far its looking really good. The water fill is the critical bit. Slowly does it, one level at a time and if possibe let it rest at each level. Your a braver man than me gunga dinn doing all the on your own. But you doing things inthe right order and just like elephant eating ...... one bit at a time. Thanbks for posting

Great to watch your 'pond project' developing. Thanks for posting this video. Hope to see more of it soon. It is hard when you have young kids but as they get older they'll be able to help. They grow up quite quickly so make the most of your time with them whilst they are still young.

We are still relatively new to parenting but can already see what you say is true. Grace is 3 now and those years have flown. We try to balance spending quality time with them with spending time on projects and whilst it is difficult they are our no 1 priority... which is why everything else takes so long! 😂

Any tear could potentially be fixed by some flex tape, or any duck tape in the short term, I’ve seen it advertised as being able to fix wholes even with water present, and now you have a pond you can raise fish or shrimp, or even lotus root, it’s delicious and looks great

Just don't know how you did that! So frustratibg watching the wind taking the lining layers as you tried to line the pond. Glad to see you found some tyres to help plus another person eventually. It was one of those 'community' projects really but well done for sticking with it and your achievement. Pleased to see the end shot with some water in it and look forward to next vlog to see how its going.

Really not eazy doing this on your own but you have really done well so far in this video frazer. Its a pity your land does not have clay because clay lined ponds dont leak and you need to packit in very tight. Have mostly just you and your wife and having to look after 2 small children its really not eazy but well done hope everything goes well and you can achieve the desired results as it must be horrendous to not have large volumes of fresh clean water with kids and any animals you have pplus you need water for growing fruit and vegetables
@The_OffGridFamily

Our land is actually clay, and we had a pond before which held water without any liner but we've also had one which didn't so we decided the safest bet was to line it. We couldn't risk it not working this time 😫
