I personally love classical music. As a black person, though, I remember being told that I was "trying to white" by my fellow classmates as I was growing up, and so, I tried hiding the fact that I played clarinet and listened to classical music. While I agree classical listeners can be elitists, in my experience, it's non-classical listeners who choose to single out their classical listening counterparts.

I 100% agree! I think the ideology that music can only be enjoyed by a single race is absolutely absurd. We should just keep loving what we love.

I suffered the same as you. Growing up I had access to free instrumental lessons at school from the age of 5 to the age of 16. it was only then, that my parents paid for my lessons because I went to 6th Form College outside of my Borough. Some of my school friends gave up once they started secondary school and also expected me to "grow out of it". I went on to study a Music degree.

Make me think of this Algerian friend who was hiding she loved classical music, because she associated that to old rich white privileged people, so she didn't feel legit or something. And ignoring that, (I'm black, it's important for the story) I told her very spontaneously that I'm totally crazy about classical music, I talked about twoset violon, just for sharing what I loved. She didn't say much this day, but she admitted months later she started to listen to classical music way more freely because of me, she understood she was kind of legit of loving it too. I didn't expect that, and I never though it would be something to be ashamed of. But I'm so proud to know I changed her mind on this without the intention of doing it, and I'm so glad she can enjoy it now. I share my favorite pieces and musicians with her now to encourage this 😊 (I don't know if my English is well, i'm French sorry 😅)

@@aromanticfrog1939 Yeah, it would be cool to be able to start learning instruments or perform in choir starting in elementary school. I definitely think baroque to early romantic music is pretty Elitist. Eurocentric. Late romantic and after there wasn't such a focus and it didn't feel like some kind of bubble so classical music from there and later would not be Elitist/Eurocentric.

I used to be an orchestra manager and the thing I've found to be common is that musicians and people who work on the concerts aren't 'elitist'. But sometimes people in the audience can be. My parents come from a migrant background and always came to support me when I was working. Unfortunately, they've had a lot of negative experiences with other audience members. They didn't fit the 'mould' of what a classical music audience is meant to look like I guess. They told me they've been looked up and down because the clothes they were wearing weren't as fancy as everyone else's, they've even been asked to move seats (that I paid for them) before. It's sad and I'm really glad TwoSet is bringing these issues to light. Music is for everybody no matter who you are and everyone deserves to enjoy the absolute magic of a concert hall equally.

I never liked that, but this isn’t just classical music, being a business student, it is the same thing. In the end I decided to go into computer science and get into street culture (hip hop, rap, etc.) cause what I grew up with actually made me feel like I didn’t fit in, which is so unfortunate. TwoSet made me want to pick up my piano, violin, flute and listen to classical music again!

I've been regularly attending operas for about 17 years now. I occasionally have people comment on how expensive that is, or that I must be making a lot of money. I always point out that I attend approximately the same number of college-level American football games each year, that those tend to cost slightly more than the opera performances, but that no one ever thinks of going to see the Texas Longhorns play as "fancy". It really is interesting how people intuitively slot certain activities in their minds.

You’re right. It’s just that mainstream media has been implicitly hammering this irrational sort of phobia of classical music into people’s heads for so long that they have forgotten to think critically for themselves. They just lap up what’s on the screen. Whatever is given more hype is considered ‘cool’. It doesn’t help that people like sacrilegious boi and piano stool kicker are getting mainstream attention. They don’t represent classical music; the former tries to portray himself as the best (kind of elitist) and the latter makes people think that classical music needs side drama like kicking stools to ‘spice’ it up because it’s too boring.

I wonder if part of this is due to the dress code; one tends to dress up for classical concerts, vs. anyone can wear cutoff jeans and a tank top to pretty much any sports event. In their minds, the concert is more expensive because the attire is more costly and formal, even if the cost to attend the actual function is less.

Other thing that comes to mind is not applauding during the performance. People treat it like it's a crazy idea, but like they said, we do it all the time in movies theaters. Now, for sure, I think not doing it in between movements is way overkill, but the rule is meant to serve the same purpose in both cases: keeping immersion.

@@mickeymuse2 I agree, but what I don't get is, why people think dressing up in formal or a bit classical type of way is more costlier than dressing in casual or trendy way or it is only suited for a certain class or group. Everybody can dress up in that way and anybody can enjoy classical music. Unfortunately people themselves have alienated from dressing more formal and classical style, enjoying classical music etc when they can do it easily.

The violin preceded the electric guitar by hundreds of years. But classical music is more ridgid and pure than electric guitar music. Ridgid because there is no improvisation and pure because the instruments are played without effects. Classical music is also complex especially in a symphony orchestra. There are "elitists" associated with every type of music.
@ryan_alexander
@ryan_alexander 3 жыл бұрын
@@raymondrak961 You realize how elitist that comment sounds right? Classical music is more "pure" than electric guitar music because they don't improvise and play acoustically? And "electric guitar music" is somehow less complex than a symphony? I mean there's less layers, but I dare you to go listen to any Rob Scallon song (particularly Rain or Anchor) and tell me if your average orchestra can do that much with so little (incidentally, using guitar effects).

@@raymondrak961 You massively missed the point. When the violin was first invented, classical music was the "new hotness" just like electric guitar was the "new hotness" in the 1930s/40s. Early composers were not writing songs thinking they were going to be only for "refined" cultural elites, they wrote it to be enjoyed by the masses because the instrument was widely popular and classical musicians had mass appeal, just like rock musicians did in their day, and just like pop musicians do now.
@raymondrak961
@raymondrak961 3 жыл бұрын
I said pure because with the electric guitar one can have effect pedals such as reverb, chorus or delay. If you have a better adjitive, then kindy let me know. I said complex because a symphony orchestra has many instruments playing different parts simultaneously. Is jazz complex, My taste in music varies with different genres. If I am elitist, then it is with a variety of music.

In the distant past music may have been financially supported by the wealthy, but that does not mean that only the wealthy could hear it. Everybody who went to church in Leipzig, and that was everybody, would hear Bach's cantatas. From the time of Mozart, composers increasingly supported themselves, through the sale of concert tickets and sheet music. After the invention of sound recording, people could buy a relatively inexpensive record, and play the music over and over again.

"Inheritance" is also a big factor! I feel that much like education, classical music is also often brought from parent to kid. The classes and instruments for classical genre are often more expensive, but there is also a "class" and culture thing going on. An example is even in Southern Germany: While rural and kids with basic education might learn wind instruments for local bands which play at local festivites, kids on higher, more urban schools might even have school orchestras and learn a classical instrument. I do think this is changing nowadays. I met many people saying they'd love to have learned a classical instrument when they were younger, because they love the music, but when I encourage them to start at a later age, they mostly decline. Maybe there's also this impression that you can't learn a classical instrument when you don't start young.

Democratisation is what is holding classical music back in the first place, I don't know what you're on about. You'll notice there is a massive divide between modern music and classical in many ways, technical, social, monetary, and so on and so forth. That's really what's going on here. The elitists are often in love with classical music because they hate pop/rap/modernity and they hate it because they hate what's associated with it. There is a reason so many pop songs are covered with all sorts of instruments. Not that many hate it, but people's image of classical is that of literature, it's for the "Cultured".

Just as "folk art" should be exposed more, I think that "fine art" (I hate that term) should be exposed more too in order to get rid of people's deluded ideas that it is only for the elite.

I would identify the link between classical music and elitism is really to do with access / social class - being educated in the music which is less in the mainstream, access to learning an instrument which costs a lot of money, association with higher social classes at least in the UK this is certainly a strong feeling of this. Furthermore, the racial diversity in the classical genre I think is lower than in mainstream hip hop or r&b; which again can link to social class and 'elites' being those who have access

I think you guys forgot to elaborate the implicit definition of elitism by some people like me, maybe, because of "the effort of buying the instruments". Price gap between classical instrument to mainstream one is so high. I remembered you once talk about this a little bit in your other video about violin price range, for instance. I believe this condition stops some bodies to start learning classical music due to its financial incapability. At least, in general, that what happens in my country. So, in my clueless mindset, maybe, the other definition will be: classical music can only be reached by wealthy family. This session will be nicer if you react, argue, and lighten that stigma. Disclaimer: it's all my opinion. CMIIW.

That is unfortunately true. Although many higher-learning music institutes do offer full scholarships, the years it takes before that requires a huge amount of money and often those that start young come from privileged backgrounds, which leads to the industry being very closed. Another note on why there is the impression that classical music is for "old, wealthy people" as mentioned is not just because of the holdover from olden times, but because the musicians need funding and support to be able to hold concerts or to make a living. These two combined result in a high barrier to entry and subsequently an elitist stigma. Which is also what Twoset is trying to change and I'm so glad for it, I hope more people get into classical music and appreciate it, diversifying the audience and supporting the musicians who make music.

But that has been a very recent development - like in the last 40-50yrs or so (in the US). When my mom & her sibs were in public school (70s), everyone got music theory, music history/appreciation, and training in some instrument. There were also a mix of school/city/State bands and scholarships for any kids that showed talent & interest. I sucked at playing lol, but my sibs & I similarly got the same courses, but it was already starting to be restricted to only good schools & top-achieving kids. Now the kids don't even get basic music or art appreciation courses, let alone instrument training, unless they go to a particular program or well-funded school (often private or charter).

Also, there's an issue of priorities. How many parents or schools pay oodles for laptops or Chromebooks, saying they're gonna teach all the kids to be programmers? I am not a musician, but I love classical music more than any other genre, so I was always surprised and dismayed by the dismissal of the genre by a majority of population. To understand this, I spoke at length to a friend of mine who was then getting his PhD in history with a thesis on difference of western and eastern classical music and their evolutions and also studying violin at the Moscow conservatory, it was very enlightening for me so I will briefly share some of the main points he brought up. 1. Historical perspective - Historically all through medieval era to renaissance to industrial revolution, classical music was the music of the wealthy. Peasants and workers rarely could have enough money or time to enjoy a whole concert in depth. The classical musicians and composers were mostly either themselves nobility or were mainly patronized by the nobility or the upper merchant classes. In a feudal class society, with segregated culture, this created an image of that particular form of music as "music of the high society". This mostly changed with the Russian revolution, and advent of the US middle class, suddenly there was a large pool of educated former lower class people who had the means to enjoy classical music. In modern era, the divide is almost non-existent, with mass media, nothing is for the elite anymore. 2. Accessibility - Historically and even today, the cost of the musical instruments and sometimes musical instructions are so costly, that even people who enjoy classical music can't themselves become classical musicians. I for an example, have an ambition to learn to play the violin someday when my medical education is completed, but being from a third-world lower middle class family, the burden of musical training just as a hobby is too much for me, and I know several people who are in a same situation as me. Now, this by no way make it elitist, just difficult to access for poor people. Nowadays, any education is costly, if not subsidized by the government (we have government music schools thankfully), so the cost factor is not limited to classical music but nontheless can give of a upper class snobby vibe to the uninitiated mind. 3. Societal norms - Being from India, I can see all around me people who measure success solely by monetary incentive. In my country, classical musicians (if you can't make it to the very top) do not earn much, so there are very few people who choose it as a sole career. So, people has a notion that classical music training and professional playing is for rich people who don't have to worry about money or survival. This, indeed is misguided conclusion but one that is subscribed to by a lot of people. There were a few other points, some of which were specifically for my region and culture, so I will not share those, and the other points I can't remember.

This focuses on music listeners, which is great! Talk of this stereotype is also fairly prevalent in the folk musician vs. classical musician worlds, and almost creates a weird rivalry - at least in my experience occasionally trying to float between the two genres... it’s quite sad and frustrating...🙁 However, many folk musicians are self-taught and usually approach music from a different angle than what has been somewhat standardized for playing classical music. From folk musicians, I often hear, “you had to have a teacher to learn to read and play music, and sound like a robot...” If I had a nickel every time I heard that line, I could retire today, lol. But from the classical side, I often hear, “folk music is too easy, and it all sounds the same.” 😕 Hopefully things will change someday, and all musicians can appreciate the complexities, challenges, and nuances of the different genres...

In my experience it’s more the case that elitists weaponize the fine arts like classical music to set themselves apart. I think that was one of the major things that turned me away from classical at first-because they are so vocal about their superiority. It made me super nervous to get into classical music because I had no idea where to even start. Like if I liked a more “mainstream” classical piece, I would be told that it’s “overrated” and that I wasn’t a true appreciator of classical music because I liked that piece.

Interestingly enough, in literature it’s usually people who like classics who are accused of snobbery and elitism, or who sometimes say that contemporary or fantasy fiction isn’t real literature and things like that. I suppose it’s the battle between what’s new and popular and what’s old and well-known. A problem in all creative genres.

I’m from a poor country. Most of us don’t have access to *any* kind of music education at school. But obviously the true is that you don’t need to understand music theory to be able to appreciate music at all. What I feel like helps is educating about the etiquete (like clapping between movements) before the concert starts rather than expect people to know - not only when kids come to watch. Also channels like this that show the fun while educating about classical music.

My country is 3rd world, not really poor though, but i think it's more or less true. People have absolutely no clue about classical music or the culture in it. Classical music itself is just not very popular here, only the rich would want to get education on that because of how much commitment you put into it vs. how much money you get, a 500$ instrument isn't something an average person would think of buying (and obviously it could go 4 times that price), couple that with the pay classical musicians get. It's just not an ideal career, and especially not in places with lower standards of living.

I'm originally from not the richest countries but neither poorest (ex Soviet Union country). Don't know if it has changed since but. We did have "music education" at school. Age 6-11 all "music education" was basically to sing along children's songs (teacher accompanied on piano) and if you naturally couldn't sing, well, then f*** you, it's your problem. Age 12-15 we learned very basics of what notes there are and how to read sheet music on a very basic level. And again, singing along a piano (folk/pop songs only) but no actual education. So I grew up with a firm belief that I have ZERO talent for music cos I couldn't sing in tune at all and therefore it was pointless to try to learn any instrument or anything. So we had "music education" but it was, for the most part, absolutely of no use... And of course, no classical music was ever present in any lesson. :D And, of course, if you wanted a kid to learn anything (sing or an instrument), your parents had to pay for it, no free lessons anywhere.

@@molekyyli I'm pretty sure there was never any actual classical music education in normal schools of any countries, it'd be pointless since you would only manage to learn a fraction of it by that time. My schools just had recorder and melodica basic lessons, but that was formality. You'd have to go to a university/higher education to actually study classical music and get a degree on it of course.

@@kenz2756 I didn't mean that, more like they could've introduced us to many different genres (including some classical), instead of just singing (or in my case sounding like a dying cat) some popular songs. And well, we didn't have even that recorder. :D I don't think I would like to play a recorder (the cheap plastic ones sound horrible) but maybe it would've shown me I can actually learn to play something on something. I don't actually know how it's where I live when it comes to music education in primary schools (don't have kids) but I attended high school here and there were opportunities for interested to take extra music classes and the school had various instruments, can't remember what all (it's been 10 years since I graduated and cos I believed I had no musical ability, I just did the obligatory course and didn't really pay much attention) but at least guitar (surely bass too), piano and drums and you could join/form a school band and perform several times a year with the band. This high school was probably more art oriented (they also had a theatre group) than the other high schools in the area but it was still kinda a bit shock for me to see a drum set in the music class and not just a piano (which was available only to the teacher, not students). I'm just sad I didn't realize sooner that the fact I can't sing in tune doesn't mean I can't learn to play anything. I just recently started guitar, and violin and piano are on my wish list as well (I know the most "mainstream" instruments but whatever :D).

I think school music education in my country is pretty much only for conserving culture in this westernizing world. Probably the "wealthy old people" stereotype came from the beginnings of classical music, where composers needed wealthy patrons to subsidize them while they composed. Then the patrons would show off their composers by having concerts in their homes, for only their other rich friends. I know that often public concerts, like in Mozart's time, were offered on a subscription basis: if enough people paid money ahead of time, the concert would go ahead. So the composers had to have a way to earn money for composing. As for needing to study the music to enjoy it, there are lots of KZbin channels based on folks hearing classical pieces for the first time and reacting positively to them, actually "getting it" the first time they hear it. Yes, we know that the more familiar you are with the music, the more you understand it, and the more you get out of it, but even little babies enjoy it! btw, enjoyed the gorgeous Chopin in the background for much of the video....it distracted me from what you were saying sometimes, LOL--because classical music has great power, to transport you somewhere else. Classical guitarist chirping in : The conversation reminds me a bit of golf. Golf (the game) isn't elitist, but in reality golf in its entirety (The players, the gear, the venues and events, the context or reason for playing, the relationships between the players) on the whole is elite. From music genre point of view, I think we can generalize and say on the whole it's the most complex genre with perhaps Jazz in second place. I don't see it as superior, but I do see it as more encompassing. A tongue in cheek argument could be made that all music is either classical music or simplified classical music (yeah and acoustic guitars are 6 string basses). What's clear is that you have to cover some (but I guess mostly) classical music when you study music formally. This almost seemingly hands over classical music to the educated. In the same way as philosophy majors believe they have the monopoly on philosophy. The reality is a philosophical mind requires no education in the same way, enjoying classical music does not require attending music school. If I now narrow down the discussion, to just classical guitarists playing repertoire then what I will say is, it's unlikely that unless someone actually plays classical guitar passed intermediate level, and knows the repertoire or at least something about each piece, then they will not be engaged for hours at a solo guitar performance. Still this doesn't make the solo performance an elitist event, or if it does then every event is by default elitist. Lastly I just want to say attire. You don't go to watch a performance in beach gear. It's perhaps my pet peeve that you really need to dress up a bit to go and watch a performance.Same is true for theatre or opera, you're also not going to walk into those wearing jeans. Attire here is a little bit elitist, and it creates a bit of a barrier for most people.

Well, as a kid I really couldn't stand classical music (I'm a piano player). Then at some point I started to only like classical music all of a sudden. I guess it has to do with the pieces you play as a kid being the "simple" ones which can often times be a bit formulaic especially with pre-romantic era pieces. These are pieces rather intended as etudes even when they are fugues or something, they aren't necessarily supposed to be listened to in free time. Who would listen to a lot of Czerny etudes after all? Another thing is, that as a kid I wanted to play by ear a lot, however, I had a teacher who was really old-fashioned and despised this, so I associated classical music with disallowing fun. But I'm pretty sure, the cultural image of classical music certainly didn't help, either.

I feel like the opposite is more accurate. Many people have to hide their appreciation for classical music because we live in a society that heavily judges classical music fans. People who listen to popular modern music often assume they are more socially competent or even superior to those who listen to classical music and other lesser known genres. Is the not elitism and arrogance? And those same people call classical music boring, which very obviously shows they think their music is better. That is elitism. Growing up, I loved classical music (and I still do), but whenever people asked me what music I listened to, I would lie and list whatever bands I knew were popular so that I could fit in. And I've noticed countless times that people will brag about all the popular bands they listen to, and they receive respect from their peers for it. Very few classical music fans have the luxury of bragging about their music taste and getting respected for it. And honestly, it seems like most people, regardless of their taste in music, consider themselves to have a superior taste in music. So I find it very odd that everyone jumps to assume classical music fans are elitist without noticing the obvious elitism in modern genres. My best guess is that, since classical music can be complex, people just assume that classical music fans regard themselves as superior for listening to complex music. But most of us listen to it because we simply like how it sounds, and we certainly don't listen to it for social status, since it wouldn't help with that anyways. There are definitely classical music fans who are elitist, and who comment on how modern music is garbage, but they are no different than many fans of other genres, and they don't represent all classical music fans. The reality it that most classical music fans hide their taste, so you wouldn't know what they are like.

I'm a rock musician who also listens to classical music, jazz, pop (to some extent), folk, etc etc. To me, any kind of music is "good" when I have the feeling that it's honest. With most pop music, that is not the case (to be clear, I'm not saying it's not honest, but I just don't get the impression, and I may of course be wrong). And it's not a matter of being serious or not - for example, I think Weird Al Jankovic is "honest" because he makes the music he makes because it is exactly the music that he wants to make, and many pop acts make the music they make because they want to be famous, and it's not about the music at all. Again, my impression, I might be wrong. And of course, there are pop artists who are in it for the music, and I have no problem with that and often actually quite enjoy their music.

"Music is emotion. Controlled emotion." -Vladimir Horowitz "Music is not organized sound, but a universal language." -David Douglass (founder of King's Noyse, and violinist) *TL;DR* 1. Classical concerts can be overly formal and feel stifling 2. Modern popular music tends to focus on simpler, immediately relatable melodies. When these two worthies said these things, they certainly were not speaking exclusively about classical music. As an example, one of Horowitz's favorite pianists was Art Tatum. Regarding music as a universal language, I had the great fortune to hear those words directly from Maestro Douglass when I was attending a university with an early music class. In regards to other contributing factors for elitism in classical music, I think there are two other points worth noting: the concert scene/expectations, and accessibility (as mentioned in the video, but I'd like to elaborate on a specific point). Most classical concerts I've attended have similar crowds: people dressed to the nines, too often drenched in cologne and perfume, with conversations prior to, during intermission, and after the performance being very intellectual and full of witticisms. No clapping between movements as TwoSet mentioned. Absolute silence is expected. Compare this to the usual modern concert crowd, where people wear what they please, let emotions free, and dance as they will. In this day in age where freedom of expression is highly valued, it comes as no surprise that most people vastly prefer the latter experience. Interestingly, this has just started to change in the last 5 or so years, when the younger generation of classical musicians have taken to social media platforms, and have gained substantial followings. I think this is an amazing development. People can finally learn to enjoy music one their own terms, without feeling like they're locked in a prison for 90 minutes in the dark. The finer point about accessibility I've noticed that leads to an elitist perception is *the modern tendency to stick with melodies simple enough that they can be sung.* There is absolutely nothing wrong with that at all IMO. I'm just comparing that to something like a 4-part Bach fugue, where the first time I listen to it, I have no idea what is going on. Only with repetitive listening do the patterns emerge, and Bach's genius shines through. A perfect example is here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jpnTfXRqf5J4msU First time I heard Glenn Gould play this, I didn't know what hit me, but it was awesome. Only after listening to it like a hundred times, and finally dredging up the courage to play it (or try, at least) did I really appreciate it in its fullness. Compared to something immediately accessible like a Beatles song, a Bach fugue is information overload. In the modern culture of instant gratification, I see it as no surprise that people would rather listen to songs and pieces that are immediately relatable. Finally, the voice is truly the ultimate instrument. It is always with us, and of all instruments it (literally) speaks the most directly. People naturally gravitate towards the voice more than any other sound. My bias here definitely shines through, but there is no judgment here. People should enjoy any and all forms of music as they please.

I hope more can see this video, this compiles a very strong 'stigma' that classical music is seen today, I myself was once affected by these ideas until I see more vids from you guys. I hope more can see not just to understand classical music values more but also Twoset values, instead of 2 goofy dudes doing classical music channel when you are are very serious about how you want classical values to be understood better for us. Thank you again for taking the step to help classical music more 'mainstream' for younger generations. Thank you a lot cause I discovered more beautiful pieces thanks to you guys, it enriches my life.

My music teacher is actually elitist. When he explains something to us, he sometimes ends his sentence with: "But you don't understand that anyway, because you only listen to pop music.", which is ironic bc we don't even listen to pop music at all lol. Once he showed us a piece by Schönberg and asked what we thought of it and when we explained why we didn't like the piece, he said that Schönberg is just too complex for us

I'm from Latino America and when I was little my mom showed me the Tchaikovsky violin concerto cuz she saw a movie about it and she listened to it all the time, I liked it to, so I looked for it and I saw the Hilary Hann performance and I loved it, but I didn't listen to anything else until few years ago when I discovered twoset and found all this awesome pieces that expressed all the emotions so beautifully and I never thought that I could find that in classical music, last year my mother bought me a violin and I've been learning (it's actually harder than what they show hahah) but I'm grateful for the world that this events have open for me. It's actually hard to find this music when the culture has in some way vanished it but two set has open a door for the new generation to listen this art♥️♥️♥️ (Also sorry for the bad English I'm Chilean)

I think it's important people consider that when people say classical music is elitist, they may be referring to the lack of accessibility when it comes to education in classical music. As you delve into the highest levels of the classical music scene, costs of lessons, instruments, music, accessories, maintenance, travel, and become serious barriers. It is undeniable that most people who play classical music for a longer period of time are ones whose family can afford to support their education. Students of minority background are also often disrespected and discriminated against. By no means do I want to take away from all the hard work successful musicians have committed to perfecting their craft, or their love for the art. I merely want to suggest that elitism can come in many forms, and to those who might not be economically privileged enough to pursue classical music because of the barriers I mentioned, classical music can come off as elitist. Just my 2c.

True, but it also depends on priorities. I'm low income, and the most expensive object I own is a musical instrument. If you want it badly enough and are willing to be creative, there is often a way to get there, or partway there. As you say, the further in you get, the harder it gets to do because you NEED that good instrument and that specialized training and fewer workarounds are possible. Some instruments are worse than others. Oboes are a serious pain in the pocketbook in terms of ongoing costs, and pedal harp... well, I play harp but I will never play pedal because I am not spending everything I own on one instrument that I then can't transport because I don't own a vehicle. I can still own a lever harp and play classical music on that. Recorder is super-inexpensive to get into, although the costs start to add up if you decide you want to play every single size at an advanced or better level. Because bass recorders, even plastic ones, are still several hundred dollars, and you really do need lessons if you want to be able to play sonatas and concertos properly.

Thank you for this. I appreciate it, and think more talks need to be had about this, and how accessible classical music is and appears to be. It's really been framed wrong. I hope we can change the framing as we go forward, and I love that you two are bringing classical music to young people. BTW, I was introduced to you by my violin students. :) They all love you, so your videos are changing the musical world! Gotta go.. haven't put in my 40 hours of practice today....

As someone who has always kinda listened to mainstream music, it was really interesting to find this new genre that I never looked into cause it was never talked about. I still don't "understand" a lot of the technical terms and things, I'm just a teen who ended up being passionate about music cause I liked to sing. I love listening to this music I don't know and then get inspired to either write or research. Thank you for introducing a whole new world to me, I'm so grateful for that! :) Oh! and btw, you can listen to Taylor Swift and then listen to Rach if you feel like it! Just putting it out there

My fist comment on this channel ever, but, in my opinion, this is such an important topic and I cannot thank you, guys, enough for bringing it up! Being a music school graduate in violin, although, not a professional violinist, I very often see people's perception of classical music (or even music in general) as being only for people, who were taught to understand (!!!) it or even for people who were *born* with a knack for music (musicians are born, not created, right?...). I often find hard time to invite my friends or my boyfriend to attend a classical music event of any sort (at least back when public events were a thing) due to their insecurity and fear that they will not be able to enjoy, appreciate or *understand* it, compared to me, an "educated musician", because I somehow just have some secret knowledge that grants me the access to the secrets that classical music hides in itself. And this is so frustrating! Something similar to the "modern art", which is also, in my opinion, oftentimes regarded as "elitist" or a "snob" thing, which you *have to understand* to be able to appreciate. I would even go so far as saying that maybe all Arts in general are regarded as "elitist" by the society? More often than not, people are not used to hearing classical music in their daily surroundings. Compared to "popular" or "mainstream" music, it is more complicated and not as repetitive, so it is harder to memorise it. It is often instrumental and has a more intricate structure so you cannot sing along as easily. Thus it is somehow cast aside and regarded as something that only people "educated in music" can appreciate and this is definitely a part of a public discourse. But at the same time music and art are somehow regarded as "less important" or "less serious" careers, than, say, law or business, or medicine. And I am not even sure, whether this "elitism" comes from the musicians or artists themselves, or rather the insecure society, which labels them as "less serious" and "elitist" at the same time due to the lack of awareness. I have had many attempts of familiarising my close ones with classical music and their tension and pressure to just have the *right* opinion on it, was almost tangible. And it is so lovely to see those people slowly lift that pressure off of themselves and slowly beginning to just enjoy classical music, without being scared of it in a way, without having to have the "right opinion" and starting to naturally develop their own view on it. This is why you guys are doing such an important job of familiarising the society with classical music so that it is accessible to anyone, even without a music education background. Music truly IS for everyone. Another thing worth mentioning, is probably music education in primary/secondary schools. From conversations with my friends and my boyfriend, I found that their insecurity about their musical abilities largely comes from their school teachers, who failed to educate them in a comprehensible manner, commented on their singing or lack of understanding the subject or who did not actually try to properly teach the subject at all as it was regarded as "less important", which resulted in them just skipping classes and feeling insecure about their musical abilities even now. Now I can see that my friends' children, who are of a school age, are also really struggling with the subject, in my opinion, largely and unconsciously encouraged by their parents, in combination with poor teaching, consequently feeling insecure about their abilities, skipping classes and seeing the subject as irrelevant to their general education ("there are music schools, if you want to be educated in music, why would we bother learning it in regular schools, right?"). This is really sad and I can see that the notion of "elitism" in music and art may come from general public's lack of proper education and understanding and therefore approaching the subjects with their insecurity. Sorry for a long comment, I would really like to know do you have the same experience with music education in schools?
