This entire video was why they're fine in those cups until they go to their forever home. They're literally pond fish that live in oxygen-poor, virtually stale water. It's poetic if you think about it. These beautiful, colorful fish living in dull, stagnant water.

@@SgtGonji some live in rivers, rich with oxygen and nitrogen from the plant life in them. they're not fine in those cups, it's actually really stressful and they're extremely aggressive when you first let them into their forever home. it takes days to get them calm enough to start food and day night cycle training them.

I don’t think it’s illegal to sell them in cups, however I do think it’s illegal that people will buy them in their said cup just to put them into an environment that is literally just a bigger cup. Some instances you can keep a bunch of female betta fish together (in a properly sized environment with all their needs met) but it’s hard and takes a lot of research. My betta has a 15 gallon planted tank all to himself (some can see that as overkill but keep reading!) and he is the most active healthy happy betta I’ve owned or have seen with my own eyes (i might even argue he has the most personality, human like arguably that I’ve have ever seen in a fish I’ve owned). Of course I was naive and young at one point and had a betta in a bowl and a lot of other people I noticed do the same (young or not). Yes they can survive in bowls…but not live. A 4 year old betta in a bowl has literally been surviving the past 4 years (if a betta even lives that long in a bowl), while a 4 year old betta in a proper sized home with filtration, correct water levels and enrichment has been living (surviving but also happy and comfortable and not stressed, betta average lifespan is between 2-3 years because majority of people don’t understand the needs that these little guys must have in order to live a happy healthy life, bettas could potentially live up to 10 years, if they are given the right care attention and love :) ). It’s all about research but simply I really think it’s because people see a small fish in a small cups (compared to the other fish not kept in cups) so assume they could live like that…wrong. Also, in my opinion, maybe some can relate a have noticed this. In tv shows and movies when a fish is involved (in the pet sense) it’s usually a fish in A FISH BOWL, not to say that there aren’t aquariums in tv shows and movies, but I think it’s also how entertainment views fish and people are very influenced by the entertainment industry. But to sum it up people should research thoroughly before buying any new animal friend. ❤️

Everyone that has replied so far is absolutely 100% correct! A bowl is fine as a temporary home in the pet store until they find a new home (which should be in a filtered heated 5 gallon minimum tank).

@@XDTheLaughingManXD Show me the betta that lives in a river. their habitats are stagnant water bodies. They can’t even breed in fast moving waters, like rivers. They’re not even biologically equipped to efficiently maneuver through a river. That’s real stress to them. That’s also why you have low-flow filters in betta tanks…

Bettas are truly intelligent fish, they are the equivalent of cats for fish, if you give them proper conditions they behave like they do in the wild.

You’d expect them to be filming in the wild but :) reality gets in the way.. on these documentaries they always need good camera angles with informative zoom ups so they almost always create a habitat closer to what is written down… pretty sure they were store bought, or maybe mixed bred bettas they got together to film the breeding process but nonetheless, very very cool.
