About the mulled wine. It's not 1€, it is 4€ for the drink plus an additional 3€ deposit. You can give the mug back to get your 3 Euros deposit or just keep it as a souvenir effectively buying it for 3€.

Yes, in German we use the French term for fries, "Pommes Frites". Yes again, we use the term "Champignons" specifically for mushrooms of the genus Agaricus (in French: agarics/psalliotes). Mushrooms in general are called "Pilze". Raclette is a dish from the francophone part of Switzerland and as well as for Pommes Frites there's no German equivalent for the word. That's why it's called "Raclette" in German as well. Who would have expected that you would learn about the amount of French words in the German language by watching a video about food at German Christmas markets in July? 😅

In former times the noble people in Germany used to speak French, in addition the French and the Germans are neighbours and share a long history. That's why we have so many french words , but sometimes with a different meaning.

15:30 No wonder, they didnt enjoy the "Dampfnudel". They ate the "Dampfnudel" completely wrong. Usually you eat it with a lot of vanilla sauce and with a cherry sauce on top. Cause its made out of yeast dough its usually very dry inside. So you need a lot of sauce for that dry dough. Its often filled with cherries cause of that too.

Mulled wine is called "Glühwein" because in the past a red-hot iron (ein GLÜHENDES Eisen) was put into the wine to make it hot! 😉 BTW: I think she would like "Meerrettich" (horseradish). You can get it ready-made in a jar, sometimes milder with a little cream, but also different spiciness levels. I like to put some cream cheese on my bread/rolls and then spread "horseradish" on it and then top it with breakfast sausage cold cuts (cold cuts, not to be confused with bratwurst!) and/or cheese. Very tasty!

Why should we gave a born child another name? We are not 'murica. Pommes Frites are from Belgium and not from France. So why should we call it "French Fries"? Same for Crepes. Why should we call it pancakes? But nice reaction btw.

" Dampfnudeln" these dough balls are made from yeast dough cooked with steam and then fried. A bit salty, a bit sweet, very neutral and tasty with every type of sauces, with "Nutella" or with fruits

You can get Poutine over here as well, but not so much on Christmas Markets, but more on dedicated food truck festivals. I like it, because Pommes, as we colloquially call french fries in German, are one of my favorites.

I saw Asian tourists picking up chestnuts in the autumn. They are not edible. The roasted chestnuts are different chestnuts. I tried to warn them but they didn't understand me in German or English. I suspect they were a bit scared of me because they are so little and only reach up to my stomach. I hope they didn't eat them.

Actually, a lot of foods at christmas markets have french names. I don‘t know why but I guess it‘s because Germany shares a border with France and when those foods became popular here, French was known as a language that only rich and well-mannered people spoke. It was a fancy language. Or it‘s just because Germans are generally lazy (or efficient as we like to call it) and the foods already had a name. Why come up with something new when a name already exists? Knowing Germans, that sounds much more likely to me ;)

12:10 These are chestnuts and there are lots of chestnut trees in the forest and you can harvest them in the fall, roast them and eat them warm. In my youth I used to collect them a lot every year and I still know the places where you can get them where nobody else knows them and only the wild boars are the competition.

*There is no general German cuisine. Every German region has various influences in the cuisine. The typical food in Bavarian Christmas markets can also be different in each Bavarian region, but normally you can get various caramelized nuts like almonds, hazelnuts, cashews, walnuts, Macadamia nuts,....or roasted chestnuts......and, of course, various grilled sausages, Bavarian style potato salad,....Glühwein, Lebkuchen, Auszogne and other regional Christmas time pastries....* 🎄🍫🍩🥨☕🍪🫓

Germany is in the middle of europe, surrounded by 9 other countries and friend with the most countries in europe. Germany is the 2nd largest migration countrie after the US. So our culture has many influences from all countries in Europe, the USA and Asia. Sometimes more, sometimes less, but especially when it comes to food you can see that we live a multicultural lifestyle.

@@Chatharina : I am not Britta herself, i am her boyfriend, only using her Computer too. You must know, i have light Asperger. There are real Christmas Markets , for example Nuremberg, which exist for centuries, no problem, because very old tradition. There are Christmas Markets like in my village. Only half a day, organized by lutheran and catholic church, together with local organisations/Vereine. It starts with a Gottesdienst (Mess ?) done by both priests together, then you can buy food or small gifts. The earned money , together with Money people give without buying something ( Spende) is collected ,and used to support chatity organisations. No problem, such Markets are a charity (?) event. The problem , i call Money Maker Markets, are those Markets with no real old tradition snd an assumingly pure commercial backgrond. Many persons don' t understand the brain of Asperger or Autistic persons, but i hope, you understand my point.

@@brittakriep2938 Thank you for explaining. Yes, i understand your point. But still, the fact that these commercial markets have no traditional or christian background, they still are a big part of christmas season for many people. I dont think that is wrong. I would like christmas to be less about money, but i think the markets are not a big problem. It is more the relentless advertising and always bigger and better stuff. While on the market you can only buy some (yes, pricey) small things, the real point for most people there is to come together and eat and drink, which is a good thing for me. .
