Welcome back to Horsepower Warehouse!
I'd like you guys to take a look at the two harness kits linked below. One is $8500 and the other is $600. While both will serve the same overall function, one is representative of the quality needed for a $350k+ custom car and the other would be more suited for a typical hot rod. Deutsch Autosport bulkhead connectors, Raychem heat shrink, Mil Spec Tefzel wire are what makes the premium wiring harness so much more expensive. While this is a single example, this type of decision making is required throughout the build process. We take this same approach to the entire build of our cars and this is why most of my resto mod estimates start at the 350k mark. I’ve never been a big original guy. I bought my 1964 Coup many years ago it wasn’t original and was a base option car, so I made it a resto mod. For me it’s about what you get with the driving experience. I’d rather have a C2 that’s looks stock but performs like a newer Corvette. I’ve got $120K in a 20 year old build. 500 HP small block 327, manual 6 speed, upgraded performance suspension, big disk brakes, but my engines old now and it’s time to replace it. Contemplating doing an old school small block 427 or an LS engine. Either way I’d like 600 HP. But he’s 100% right this shit isn’t cheap.

Absurd to charge that kind of price. Muscle car prices like the housing market have reached insane prices. Like we see in the stock market, a correction is definitely needed.

I do agree that the cost of these top level builds can be an absolute fortune. The sad part is I make no more money on a custom build with 2000 hours labor versus (4) NCRS type builds at 500 hours each. While I will almost certainly never be able to afford one personally, people are buying C2 resto mods at $300k to $600k+ at auction on a continual basis if built correctly. @Vincent Moylan Two thousand hours of labor. Do the math on that. Even if HW were CRAZY enough to essentially work for minimum wage (federal minimum wage has been at $7.25 an hour as of 2007, and even burger flippers are making a few dollars above that), that's still $14,500 ($7.25 an hour x 2000 = $14,500 before taxes) *just for the labor* !! We haven't even gotten into what the parts are going to cost him for the build. If you can't afford $14.5k *just to get in the door* and slapping on junkyard parts on this trash build, what makes you think you can afford what HW does at all? Why not just buy the service manual for this car, drag a rusting C2 carcass, and do it yourself if you think you can do what he does *cheaper*? You can't afford his products, but you want him to sell a premium product at a 99 cent cheeseburger price? Your price expectations likely wouldn't even keep his lights on, pay his employees, etc. Last time I checked, this isn't the year 1950. You want him to build to a ridiculously low price point that doesn't even cover his costs, but your quality expectations are "cost no object?" Seriously? You're free to look around, but generally speaking, you're not going to get concours quality at a poverty buyer price. Don't take my word for it. If you think you can get equal to superior quality on a "I can't afford it" price level, go ahead. That's the beauty of the free enterprise system in that HW doesn't have to get browbeaten to charge less than what his services are worth! What do you want, forced labor? Minimum wage? You obviously can't afford what he does. I'm thankful to live in America, where one is free to charge what one's skills are WORTH, not what some anonymous person THINKS HW ought to be charging just because you can't afford what he does. People that want you to build to these ridiculously low price points have no understanding what goes into these builds either economically or otherwise. A high quality harness costs YOU $8,500 but you're not 'allowed' to charge for it in the build? Really? Sorry for this post, but price chiselers like this get under my skin, where they want *concours* quality at *charity* prices. I can't imagine anyone slaving away to build a pristine product and essentially not getting paid a fair price for their hard work. Get a clapped out Camaro instead and leave artists like this alone to earn what their hard work is obviously worth to someone who can afford to pay what these cars are worth. Lastly, remember that two thousand hours figure. That's the rest of us working FULL TIME, forty hours a week for a YEAR doing what we do. I doubt anybody else would work for FREE for Vincent Moylan doing what we do for a living just because Vincent can't afford what the rest of us do at our own full time jobs.

@@houseofno I think you are a little cynical. Many of us have these cars but will never go to this extreme of restoration. I can see having my car restored to a good level using the same parts but new. I do not need a new frame or many of the components that he automatically replaces with after-market parts. My engine does not need to be rebuilt nor does my rebuilt Muncie. I have new red line Cokers and do not need new wheels or tires. It seems to me that there should be an in-between restoration that does not trash many things that are perfectly good for many years and are original. To each his own, but there are more of us that want something that is more in line with the original aim of having a fun car that is not too expensive to drive.

@@rudyyarbrough5122 Rudy there’s different levels of resto mods. A freshened up C2 with a stock 350 small block and a 4 speed with a $5K paint job that’s basically stock isn’t going to bring as much or cost as much as a C2 with a $30K paint job, a full racing suspension with a 600 HP LS engine and a manual 6speed. The thing is real C2’s wether there originals or not are rare nowadays and it’s worth it to not do a half ass build on the car one way or another.

@@craigthescott5074 I would gladly pay $5,000 for a paint job! It doesn't exist in today's world. Every shop I visited is now doing only insurance work. No classic stuff at all.

Cars are simply returning to their origins as a rich man’s hobby - and that is not a bad thing. The truth about a lot of currently cherished collector cars is that many will become the future parts sources for high end restorations resto-mods and customs. The future for the nicest cars out there is in museums. Enjoy seeing these cars, other than dreamy visions of looking cool while driving them. We now live in a world with low 9 second Tesla Plaids that can be driven in every day traffic with no fuss at all - and be driven easily by people with no special driving talents: they are fast, but they are not beasts

When a customer calls and keeps asking "can I get it cheaper" it means they are undervaluing your product and your services. Usually time to end the call and have that person look elsewhere for their C2 "bargain." Knowledgeable professionals are well worth what they charge for their time and expertise. Thank you so much about the resto mod information, and i agree with you on building that 63 resto mod . You have to have deep pockets to have that build for you and have someplace were she can be stored with heating and cooling system and air filter quality. Thank you Sir for all your information my cuzin has a 63 with a LS3 AND STILL NOT ON THE ROAD HE HAS IT FOR 30 YRS STILL NOT COMPLETE

Jr. I enjoyed your video on top of the line and stock builds. The last corvette I restored 20 years ago cost me in excess of 20k. A 70 lt1 double top roaderster. I know what it takes to do it right. I am now 77 years old and I am now looking to buy a ready build car knowing what it takes to do it right. Good luck with your work I may be you way soon to check a car out. Bill

I greatly respect your craftsmanship and dedication and I understand the cost factor somewhat. I know the custom frames with the latest and greatest, along with a LT5 crate engine and trans is pricey and that's not including everything you need else to make it run, function properly, accessories, wheels and tires. Then of course good body work and paint are super expensive too. I understand the price and sadly the average car guy has been left behind forever. What started out as a garage/backyard hobby is only for the rich now. Keep up the good work though.

I absolutely agree, the top level C2 resto mods have reached a price that are beyond anything I could hope to personally afford. The good news is that there are a TON of more budget friendly cars available to wrench on that make fantastic Resto-mod candidates. Thanks for the comment!

Do you offer an option where you would use a stock [ refurbished mid year frame ] but all all the upgraded suspension a-arms , coil overs adjustable coil overs , 9 inch ford rear end 4 link etc .?Or does a retromod have to have the complete chasses ?

My understanding is that Arkus-Duntov wanted the hood grills on the 63 hood to be functional but GM said no. As anyone ever made them functional?

The quality and the skill have a price, what we just ask is to have a perfect job done, and your resto-mod looks like that...! If I have to say, I do not get the difference between that grey C2 and the Camaro..., I thought that it was the same way to build those two..! But anyway they are all just great..!! Thanks for sharing.

Here's an easy difference: GM built hundreds of thousands of Camaros, but just 10k of the '63s, half of which are still surviving. The rest are clapped out, crushed, rusted out shells. Almost unworkable C2 shells are still generally asking low five figures for shells that are so rusted out they crumble like old crackers in your fingers. Even the barn find C2's are drying up as the original owners die off and these barn finds are getting snapped up during estate sales. The last original C2 was sent down the assembly line nearly 65 years ago, and GM isn't making repops. Even repro manufacturers are charging low five figures for reproduction 60's bodyshells, and that's just for a metal body shell.

Why is the Corvette market so different from other resto mods? Is it C2s only, or does it apply to C1 through C3? Can I do a GTO resto mod for a more reasonable, "mid-level" cost?

Gorgeous cars, I mean stunning!! I'll never afford one. 2000 hours equates to 40 hours a week for 50 weeks straight. I dont get it but who am I to argue

Love that Silver Blue! I would want it as a ‘Vert, tho. Can’t hardly believe it can be a resto-mod back to original condition for just $140 tho! Isn’t that a bit under priced? Or am I thinking more on a basis of a ‘67 w/427 tri-power or equal? I don’t know much about these things….only that I love them, so I’ve Sub’d! Thanks for your efforts on content and your work ethic. Means a lot!

Why would you put carbon ceramics on a resto mod? You aren't tracking these things, and adds a ton of unnecessary cost to the build.

Not sure I agree. I paid $120K for a resto mod 20 years ago. And it’s still worth that. It’s all relevant there’s only so many C2 Corvettes out there. They aren’t going down in value.
