Fage hands down! O tried them all. I am diabetic and lots of them have sugar or fruit preserves. I can't eat those. Fage zero fat yogurt is tart. I do put some sugar substitute in it in the morning but it is thick, creamy and zi recommend it. Glad you like Fage but I have to use the Zero kind.

One thing Jack failed to mention is that as somewhat acceptable shortcut in lieu of straining is the addition of additional milk powder which thickens the yogurt up the same amount as straining. Also worth noting is to quickly be able to point out the fakes by reading the label for thickening agents like gelatin or pectin

As a Greek whos recently moved abroad, i can say this. Amongst those in the video, fage is the only real yogurt. To explain the difference to you, say that you consider Coca Cola and Pepsi Cola to be the staple or representative of the real 'Cola taste'. Then you travel to China and as you walk into a convenience store you notice they sell 'Chobani Cola', 'Huawei Cola' and so on.. As you would expect, they taste similar, but really.. they are different by a country mile!! But note this, the typical local Chinese person might think Huaweii Cola is a better cola. To you, who thinks knows better, it isn't true. But it doesnt matter to the chinese guy, does it??? These things are completely subjective.

Fage s the original and best Greek Yogurt even chef Bobby Flay agrees. They finally stepped out the box, and started making flavored Greek Yogurt too, so they can compete with the other brands that already have flavored Greek Yogurt, but without making it taste too sweet, and unnatural. In fact to show integrity they did not even put any added sugar. Quality you expect from a brand that has been making Greek Yogurt since 1926. Outside of Fage the only brand that comes close to the taste even though it is not technically Greek Yogurt is Icelandic Yogurt.

Next day, I drain the yogurt in a fine sieve. I get about 40% whey (Jack said the commercial companies get 75%), which I freeze & use to make bread.

Dear Briget and Jack, In Greece, yogurt has a lovely thick consistency indeed. Ergo, in my opinion, the aspect that typifies real Greek yogurt is a distinct derma, a sort of yogurt butter which separates the rich cream, then is topped with paper then sealed in its container. Once the paper is gently peeled away the yogurt may be topped with sugar or honey and berries or peaches freshly picked off the tree. Now that is a yogurt experience that is simply not available commercially in America. No matter how hard Fage (means food) or Chobani try to emulate Greek-style yogurt they can not pare to the real thing. They mass produced a thicker yogurt in lieu of the creamy classics, but I digress. Even homemade American Greek-style yogurt doesn't come close. I recall when Greek-style yogurt hit the market in NYC, I was so excited looking forward to the dense, creamy derma on top and there was none. Saddened, I never bought it again. Having said that, the butter is also unlike any other. I did not mean to minimize the wonderful brilliance and joy you bring to your viewers I wanted to dignify that companies try to capture something that can't be emulated. Thank you very much.

It was "recommended." "With a “yogurt taste that is more assertive” than our winner’s, this brand also was “tangier than I generally like, but the richness balances it,” as one taster observed. Its “whipped texture” offered slightly “less body than I’d expect,” but overall, the yogurt had “great, fresh dairy taste.” Its greater tanginess and thickness nudged this brand to the top spot in our tzatziki sauce tasting. And its high protein count, simple ingredient list, and lack of added stabilizers and thickeners indicate that this is traditionally strained yogurt."

I feel like the last person who eats regular yoghurt, I hate Greek yoghurt with a passion. The worst decision Panera made was switching their smoothies from the great yoghurt they used to put in smoothies to Greek crap - I remember when working there Corp saying it wouldn’t effect taste and was healthier but it ruined the taste of the drink. Clearly I’m in the minority though since everyone else apparently loves the stuff - I just wish it hadn’t displaced real yoghurt from the store shelves in the process.

The taste is "smooth" and pairs really well with paleonala granola. And the Fage is less thick than Cabots. I eat this every day and stuck with Cabots after I became disenchanted with Fage in terms of thickness and sour undertaste.

Not sure why he said Chobani Whole Milk Greek was thin... you could do brick-laying with that stuff. It's great. I usually agree with both of them... not this time, though.

I'm a Greek-American, and my mother was born in 1914. Before Greek yogurt exploded in the market, my mom used to tell me stories of seeing cheesecloths hanging in the kitchen, in which HER mom -- my yiayia -- was straining yogurt. We should have got in on the ground floor of the industry...issued a Greek yogurt IPO!

Before Greek yogurt got big, I would snag the big Bunn coffee filtres from work and use a colander/coffee filtre set up over night. The annoying thing was that whole milk yogurt was hard to find in my area so I sometimes had to add some heavy cream to get the fat balance right for proper texture.

I have had Fage yogurt before while in the Air Force, but I'm not a big fan of any of it though.

About 7 years or so ago Chaboni used to thick and tangy. It changed significantly to thin and tasteless. I emailed them, the response was worthless. Still, they're the number one seller in my supermarket.

@@manny44 It is, about a dollar each. Plus I think the mild taste, as it doesn't taste like real Greek yogurt.

Chobani is really "turkish" yogurt. It would have been an insult to Greeks if that came out on top.

They did an equipment review of a yogurt maker (I forget if it's on YT or just their website). There is the Alton Brown method of using a heating pad from his Good Eats episode and I do know of a sous vide method. Milk, like fruit juice and bread dough, will basically ferment naturally, so a wild (possibly unpleasant) yogurt will develop. Controlling it for consistent results is the hard part. Creme Fraiche is often just left on a counter and allowed to ferment naturally.

Am sure most people, like me, already own several kitchen appliances . Want to make yogurt without having to buy a yogurt maker. Biggest problem is inconsistent results . Sometimes texture is perfect, other times slimy or grainy. Flavor is inconsistent as well...from mild to very tart.

It's simple to make yogurt - I've been doing it for years. Heat milk up to 180 degrees F, cool it to 112 degrees F, then add 1/4 cup plain yogurt (either purchased or saved from your last batch) to every quart of milk. After mixing in the starter (yogurt), pour into a thermos and let sit undisturbed on your counter for about 12 hours. Done. If you want Greek yogurt, then strain it using coffee filters.
