4th grade routine (only child)--7-7:30am: read aloud. 9-10am: Independent and shared reading (alternate days) and math. My daughter taps out quickly with math, so we do short lessons. 10-11: Outside! 11-12: Language Arts--teaching cursive, reading instruction (just a quick 5 min. reviewing more complex letter teams/groups and sounds), spelling, grammar and writing (using Oak Meadow or Grammar Galaxy), journal writing. We do this three days a week. On Thursdays, she writes letters and makes cards. Fridays, see below. 12-1: Lunch w/ Daddy! We often do trivia together or watch a Mystery Doug video. 1-1:30 Math game. 1:30-2pm (or 1:30-3pm depending how involved we get!): Science and Social Studies, sometimes we do two days of one, two days of the other; sometimes we do one subject for a few weeks and then switch to the other; sometimes we do a little bit of both each day...just depends on what we're doing. Dinnertime: Italian! We're learning together as a family. After dinner, we play violin together before bedtime. Fun Fridays: we start the day with reading and math, just like every other day, then instead of Language Arts, we play games (any subject), and instead of Science/Social Studies, we do art and/or science experiments. Wishing you a beautiful year!

This is our 5th year homeschooling and I still can't stick to a routine. I do appreciate your relaxed approach and completely agree that we need to do a fun enrichment day more as a reward. Maybe then we can complete our year before the next one starts! Thanks for sharing!

It's our first year homeschooling (never planned to ever homeschool), so I think we'll be doing a lot of trial and error for schedules this year. So far the plan is morning routine (breakfast, dressed, brush teeth, etc.), workbook time (assignments they can complete fairly independently), lunch, read-alouds while doing Classical Conversations coloring sheets and/or sensory time (play doh, etc.). We'll be teaching Pre-K and 1st. I've been thinking of creating some sort of print out so they can visually see what the plans are for the day.

I have three kiddos so we will be starting with morning basket (for us that means scripture study and memory work, read aloud chapter book and cycling through picture books or other shorter readings), then we will have a calendar time and music and movement for my preschooler. I’ll start seat work with one of my older kids (1st and 2nd grades) while the other two play and switch back and forth between them for LA and math so they’re only working for about 20 minutes before getting a break (they have ADHD so this helps stretch their ability to get school done). They’ll have free time before lunch, we will eat and then have some quiet time before doing history or science all together. Right now I’m planning on Friday’s being our day that we do our enrichment studies and game school but I like the idea of using the sixth day of school, too. Being ADHD, my girls benefit greatly from a visual schedule so these magnets are an awesome idea.

We're starting this year. My kids are almost 2.5yo and almost 4yo. We usually do some type of morning basket during basket then we do an activity or two. After that they either play or we continue with the activities if that's what they want to do. Whenever we do play dough or kinetic sand, it takes us all morning long, and they love it! After nap/quiet time, we sometimes do a few more minutes of school (sometimes art, or reading, or nature) and free play. We don't follow a strict schedule because they're so little and I'm in my first trimester so I'm too exhausted to do much right now. It's all a season of life. I'm sure we will find a different rhythm in the future, and that's fine with me. I love your idea of a rewards day with fun activities that are still school, but in a different way. Right now I feel like that's all we do, but in the future I know my kids will enjoy having "days off" and I love your idea of calling it a reward.

Your magnet systems sounds so great, I hate to say it but I’m so disorganized in some respects and haven’t been very good about teaching my little a routine. My artistic brain doesn’t want to commit to a schedule but I know she needs it. Let us know how your plans work out! I am curious about your idea on 5 days on, one day off.

I will be more relaxed this school year with my grandson. He is a late riser and works better when he wakes up on his own which is usually around 10 am. We will focus on fun and easier classes from about 10-12 and then eat lunch. Then will work on more challenging classes after lunch. Thanks for sharing your schedule!

Very cool idea to use the cute magnets! I have a 3rd grader too, a 8th grader and 11th grader that I homeschool. We are very relaxed but need a routine. We homeschool 5 days a week but have fun Friday where we change things up, either a fun outting or special lunch with a documentary etc etc 😄

I have one child age 13 (next month). On days we are home (average 3 days a week) and are doing school it looks like this. Wake up, breakfast, do school for 4-5 hours, lunch, chores, and free time. Sometimes she takes a break, but most of the time she chooses to push through and get it all done at one time. Sometimes she will eat and do school at the same time. We have a no screens rule until school is done. Besides screens for school. She likes to go on hangouts with her friends. So she wants to get it done when they are done. Most of her friends homeschool and have the same rule.

I really like the 6th day as fun day. I tend to prioritize core subjects when we are behind schedule. Having all the electives on one day seems so much more manageable and less stressful. I am still working on finding a good routine for the coming school year.

My routine is really chill and with baby and a preschooler my goal is to just develop a solid routine because we lost our routine once baby was born 😂❤️ Right now we do devotions, reading, some learning honestly just whenever he wants to learn throughout the day 🤷🏼♀️ and we do family worship after dinner. He will just be turning 5 soon so I don’t want to push anything on him too soon but he does love to learn❤️ I think this year we’re really just focusing on ABCs, 123s and a solid routine❤️

We have tried schedules in the past and my kids tend to fight me on it. So for our regular daily schedule, we recently started the Clipboard system from Jordan Page. My kids' list includes things like making bed, cleaning room, laundry on their laundry day, cooking days (2 per week and they help me out with meal planning and learning to cook), zone cleaning (for one week, they are responsible for a specific zone of the house such as the kitchen or living room, just to maintain the cleanliness), prayers (we are Muslim, so we have 5 prayers and they have always had a tough time remembering to pray, so this helped a lot), 1-2 daily chore sticks of simple chores that are done weekly like dusting and washing windows, brushing their teeth twice daily, shower/bath, 30 minutes reading, 30 minutes exercise, and school. They aren't allowed electronics until certain things on the list are done (everything but night time brushing, shower/bath, and their prayers that come throughout the day). This has really made a difference and has stopped a lot of the pull back from them. They can plan when to do their list knowing that they don't get electronics until it's done. As for school, we sat down together and worked out a schedule. We determined which unit studies we were doing every month and we made sure to include our Passport to Adventures (we will then roll right into Passport to More Adventures). Even though one is grade 4 and the other is grade 8, we made the schedule together with terms that can be used for both of them for subjects we don't do together such as math. We do try to combine as many classes together as possible such as science, history, and some literature. Since we know we will have different appointments, we assigned a day of the week for appointments or errands and created an easier school schedule for that day.
@Jennifer834 жыл бұрын
I should call it a routine as neither the daily schedule or school schedule have set times. We just go with the flow. Some days, school can be finished in 2 hours, some days it takes 4. Just really depends on them and how they are doing that day.
@Jennifer834 жыл бұрын
Also we have added a poetry tea time to our schedule for every Monday. Kids are enjoying that. I really appreciate all your ideas. My plan kind of follows yours from last year/a mix and match of a loop with what I think will work with my 2 high energy little boys, plus their baby brother...doing the important things first and then alternating days or looping subjects every other day. Breakfast and daily devotional with a memory verse, then we will go straight to a playground or something to learn math or science outdoors (alternate days M, T, W, TH), then lunch at home, children will alternate days reading a book aloud, then Mad Libs or a fun family game with language arts, then alternate days Mon - Thurs with Langauage lesson or History. Fridays will be just for Art and mommy chores and errands. ...I will be using your Waldock Way planner and your unit studies for history! ❤ First year homeschooling so I'm hoping this plan works but it may be subjective to change.

I love the idea of built in 'rest/fun' days to look forward to. We are relaxed, but also a 'recovering type A' who wants to see that progress and tangible evidence of learning. It can be hard to balance and make sure we don't go too far toward work work work, but also not fall off the rhythm of our days of accomplishing some things by doing too many relaxed fun days. I might implement every other Friday as our fun day for my three! I would love to win a set of the magnets! Looks like a great visual for kids to know what we hope to accomplish each day!
