I’ve been an educator at a number of zoos. I have to commend you for wanting to stick to non-profits. I think it’s best to try and go for non-profit, but for profit doesn’t equal bad. So long as they are AZA they are still doing important work in the conservation field, and to me that’s worth supporting. Non-profit over for profit for sure, but AZA over everything else. Just my opinion.

As a zookeeper at another AZA accredited facility, I want to thank you so much for having an open mind and doing your research! When I saw the title of the video I was fully prepared to click off of the video if you started bashing zoos, and it made me so happy when you went into your views and showed you had done research and were keeping your mind open. I will say that Animal Kingdom is extremely highly regarded as one of the top animal care facilities in the country, and a lot of the profit they make is used to run the theme park aspect of the park and pay staff AND interns (which is pretty much unheard of) vs. making money off of animals.

McKenzie Bender This! ❤️ It’s always nice to see an influencer speak positively and research zoos!
@ShanaLawson5 жыл бұрын
McKenzie Bender Yea in all fairness I think the profits go to make the park more visually stimulating and just add the extra touches Disney is known for. I always go by the way the animals enclosures look and of course the look of the animals. There’s this aquarium in Mexico (I think) and it has tons of abandoned enclosures but the enclosures with animals are spectacular! You can tell they’re focused on taking care of the animals the have with the small amount of funds they have instead of just trying to fill spaces to get more people in.
@ShanaLawson5 жыл бұрын
Truth FACTS Mad much? I think you’re a little confused. She makes profit from her work on KZbin through people WILLINGLY watching her videos and buying her merch. For profits zoos are known to not treat their animals to the care they deserve and only focus on how much money those animals can bring in. You reached really far to even try and make her channel even close to the same thing as a for profit zoo. Yes it costs a shit ton to go to these parks but they’re also a young working couple with no kids. At least they’re not out there buying “luxury” shit purely for clout.

When I signed up for the college program at Disney World, the one location I didn't want was Animal Kingdom for the same reasons you talked about in this video. Of course, I get my assignment and I end up in Animal Kingdom! However, I learned a lot while working there about Disney and the conservation fund, and I got the opportunity to talk to a lot of amazing people who worked with the animals, and it really changed my view about it. The safari is great, and it does feel very much like you're entering their world, not like you're expecting them to put on a show for you. I'm glad you enjoyed AK!

Congratulations on your first Disney World experience Sierra!! Please don't feel self-conscious at all for visiting with wet hair/no makeup; a lot of us Orlando locals go to the parks in our pajamas or bathing suits! Being cool and comfortable is far more important in weather like ours. My mom was actually the Animal Kingdom education curator for 20 years and was on the opening park team after working as a keeper at Discovery Island (that spooky abandoned island that people swim to sometimes), and I truly can't stress enough how positive and happy the living experience is for the animals at Animal Kingdom. Every animal is taken care of at on-site veterinary facilities and are cared for even if they, for whatever reason, aren't able to hang out in the show exhibits. Even the animal performances like the Flights of Wonder bird show only practice positive reinforcement training, and the birds only perform behaviors that they would already be doing in the wild such as vocal mimicry, flying, and catching prey. Up until very recently (it's currently closed for renovations I believe) there was even a land called Conservation Station, which had a massive building full of interactive educational materials, live veterinary demonstrations, and a petting zoo where children could learn how to safely and respectfully interact with animals. When it comes to AZA accredited zoos, the most important thing isn't whether they're nonprofit or for-profit, it's what they spend the money on. Thank you so much for being an educated consumer and doing your research beforehand! I hope that this experience was able to put you a little more at ease regarding for-profit zoos, and I hope you come visit again soon!!

Thank you so much for doing research and being informed about your zoos and aquariums!!! As a current cast member on the animal care team at Disney's Animal Kingdom and a former education cast member here as well that is by far the most important thing I want people to do!!! So THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! Also, everything you were mentioning after riding the safari about zoos being important to conservation and education is spot on!! Especially about how this is an opportunity that not everyone would have access to at home to learn about these animals and how we can help them and their wild counterparts.

Hey Sierra! Thanks for highlighting AZA accreditation in this video, I knew nothing about it and had just written off zoos in general. I did some research and found out my local zoo, the LA Zoo, is AZA accredited and owned by the city (so not for commercial profit) so now I want to go! Zoos are always iffy for me but I love animals so much, so learning that there is an animal welfare system in place that checks on conditions and animal welfare. I love your dedication to animals and their wellbeing, and I love that you talked about it in relation to AK. Xoxoxo

I've interned at a non-profit aza zoo and a for profit aza zoo, and honestly aza is the most important thing. Both zoos had the same great level of care and commitment to conservation. The only difference was the ownership of the zoo. I'm now starting to job search for a keeper position, and I would work at nonprofit or for profit as long as its accredited. One of the keepers I worked with this summer used to work at animal kingdom and only had great things to say about them. Animal Kingdom is involved in a lot of great conservation work and contributes to a lot of SSPs (species survival plans).
@MVV7645 жыл бұрын
Animal kingdom is also for conservation purposes, Disney actually donates money from the parks to conservation. I’m not sure if you saw but when the lion king came out they actually donated most of the profits to the save the lions funds. If you take a Disney Cruise to castaway cay they will tell you the island is mostly inhabited to conserve it and help the environment:)

Zookeeper first 10 years here. If y’all have any questions about what goes on in zoos feel free to ask! I understand the ethical debate however, zoos are sometimes the only lifeline these animals have left. Tigers, for example, are critically endangered, some species having only 300 left in the wild. Without zoos, they would be extinct. We work REALLY hard for an insanely small paycheck (like, 20k a year for full time, benefitted employee WITH a degree, which is required) to make sure these guys have everything they could ever want or need. They have NEVER been outside a zoo, and they are lacking the skills they would need in the wild, just like us.

Animal Kingdom 100% is for conservation. They also donate a lot of their profit from that specific park to the care of the animals. I worked there solely for that reason. The entire message behind the park is to raise awareness for endangered species and what happens when they become extinct. Each land has a conservation message, but I only know the Dinoland one by heart because I worked in that area which is “extinction is forever.” Hope this helps! It’s my favorite park 💕

As a former Disney Cast member in the Animals, Science and Environment department (ASE), thank you for being open minded! I was skeptical at first as well, but I wholeheartedly support Disney in their efforts!
@madelynonesti90135 жыл бұрын
I'd like to add that the draw to the park is not the animals. Disney is making their money on rides and concessions, then using a lot of that money to establish an AZA zoo. In addition to this, the amount of research that Disney conducts would be extremely difficult through a non-profit! There are SO many restrictions places on non-profits, and while in general I disagree with for-profit zoos, I think the unique nature and exemplary efforts of Disney make it an exception to the rule!

Sierra, I had lunch with an animal specialist at Sanaa at Disney. I promise you that you should not feel guilty. When building Animal Kingdom they modeled a lot of it after the San Diego Zoo. I'm more familiar with museums and always balked at the idea of for-profit museums but as others have said, for-profit doesn't always mean bad. Often it better ensures the organization's likelihood of achieving the mission to the best of their ability. With the resources that for-profit orgs have access to, they can buy the best technology and hire the best experts in the field to actually do the work, such as conservation and research. It's always good to think critically of organizations and research their ethics!

Hi! Just wanted to share some info...so I use to work at Animal Kingdom and they do SO much for conservation and helping repopulate endangered species. Disney does a lot for the environment! Yes, they do make a profit from people going to AK, HOWEVER, everything they do there is in the best interest of the animals, conserving species...and a lot of times, they are repopulating them and releasing them back into the wild. So don't feel bad about going to AK! These animals are very well taken care of, LOVED, they have lots of places to roam (more space behind the scenes guests don't see), they eat the best of the best, they are active, and receive the BEST care. I love AK because a lot of the money made there does go towards helping animals and the environment. Sorry this was so long...just wanted to share! Have fun on your vaca

As someone with non-profit experience and a Disney Fanatic, I am sorry to say that the words non-profit don't mean no money is being made. The real key, beyond the AZA accreditation, is learning how a 501(c)(3) non-profit spends its money. For example, we've all see those sad commercials of the abused animals, but the majority of the donations received go toward salaries vs. care or legislation. I hope that during your trip you took the time to learn about the conservation work that is done through Disney rather than just assuming it is a money-making factory zoo.
