Our Tongue/Lip Tie Story | Newborn Tongue Tie Procedure

Tongue Ties can be a tricky topic because it seems like every single care provider has a different opinion on them and will give you a different answer! If you're feeling conflicted, I hope my video will help you feel empowered to listen to your intuition and follow your mom gut above all else.
In this video I share all about my story with my 2 kids and their lip/tongue ties. For one child, I didn't get the tie revised and for 1 child I did get it revised. Here's my experience.

My first son 1988 (second child) was born tongue-tied. I knew the morning after he was born. He could latch pretty well when nursing, but he would still swallow a lot of air; and he was colicky for the first 3-4 months. I brought the tongue-tie up to his pediatrician and she said he was thiving so don't worry about it. I would bring it up to her nearly every visit because my son also had projectile vomiting if he was allowed to cry for longer than a minute or two. His tongue-tie was so that if he stuck out his tongue it pulled so tight in the middle that he almost had a forked tongue- but this was okay (?). Again she reassured me not to worry, he was thiving and that he would grow out of it. As he got older he did grow out of it, but as he learned to talk, he really had a hard time. At 2 and 3 years there were times he had a hard time communicating what he wanted and I'd have to finally ask his sister (who was only 3 years older) what he needed/wanted. I had gotten opinions from many pediatric dentists and they all said the same thing: He will outgrow this, that he didn't need a proceedure to fix this. From the age of 3 1/2 years he went to speech therepy. Fast forward to kindergarden... We moved from Southern Cali to Northern Cali in the middle of his kindergarden year and kids being kids would make fun of his "baby talk". This school also put him in speech therepy. The first dentist I chose (who was a general dentist, but saw children 2 years and up) asked me if I knew he was tongue-tied. I said yes, and told him my story. He said we can fix this. So the next week he was scheduled for 'the proceedure' and 5 minutes late he was talking perfectly... Must've been from the 2 years of speech therepy. As mother's, we know our children and how to help them.

My son had his tongue release 3weeks ago, he's 22months n can't talk, he's just try to say mama n Dada. I pray he's speech gets better.

So glad you posted about this!! I had such a hard start with breastfeeding and we didn’t get his tongue/lip tie revised until 5 months. I wish I had listened to my gut so much sooner and had gotten it done waaaaay sooner! And for any mama who is considering having a tongue/lip tie revised, I would not recommend going to a pediatric dentist that doesn’t let you stay in the room. Seems super sketchy!

Ah gosh, yeah I definitely think there should be more awareness around it at least so that moms can make an informed decision. I'm glad you were able to get it fixed and that everything worked out!

your intro is my exact experience. ugh. my Elowen has a tongue lip and cheek tie. she spit up constantly and he lip never flanged but I wouldn't say she was colicky. nursing was hard at first and very painful for me, but she adjusted very well early on. one lactation consultant said to fix them, another said not to, we went to a dentist and they said she had them but since she was gaining weight fine we didn't need to revise it. she's 1 now and I wonder if we should or can even fix it at this age
