I like the fact that your vlogs include the good the bad and the ugly of every day living on your narrowboat and don't pretend everything is perfect, unlike one or two sanctimonious vloggers who criticise everybody else on the cut and never tire of telling you how perfect their boat is and how their ways are superior to everyone else's. Oh by the way Rich, if i have nothing to do all day i stay in my lounge wear and dressing gown and don't feel an ounce of guilt.

We know exactly who you’re talking about Paul!...lol. I nicknamed him ‘king of the cut’. His head’s so far up his a@#e he doesn’t know what day it is! I actually told him as much. Needless to say he deleted my comment...lol. Thankfully there are vloggers like these Lovely people.

No5 - the general consensus is it takes three boats to get the one you really want.... Fully expect the fella who waited 2 years to still find things he is not happy about. Another great blog and excellent observations and advice - Especially number 3, wise words. I retired early and took a hit on my pension and salary and it's been the best decision, there are few times in your life you can 'buy' time by getting off the hamster wheel of consumerism and marketing so like you say just do it !!

Hi Guys, I moved onto my boat Last August, like you I did my research, looked at several boats. I had 2 lists, must haves like reverse layout, cruiser stern, walk through bathroom. Then nice to haves, like bow thruster, cassette toilet etc. I knew I would need to compromise if I was to make the move asap. So my pension money was available July and bought boat August. You have to go for it, my wife died aged 51 to cancer so don't need anymore incentive to cease the day. Your Vlogs are among many that helped, so thankyou. Hope to see you on the cut , regards Mark and Zac aboard Last Derbyshire Miner

When my first wife and I were young we lived in a 40' x 7' trailer. One time we met in the hallway. She said "get out of my way" I said, "maybe you are in my way" to which she replied "You don't have a way!" Not much longer she told me "there is no U in team" and that was that. :) So I really appreciate how well you two get on. Cheers from Canada.

Hi again Fran and Rich. Diane and I agree totally with your list. and in the same order. As you know we continually cruised for three years. It took us months to slow down. The second winter we went home for christmas. Originally for four days,the weather was rather mild. So I never thought of winterising the boat.The company I had left to do this found out I was home.They offererd me a few days work. That turned out to be a month. It got colder and colder. So we called the marina to see what the ice was like there. "Three inches here mate" he said. over the next week the ice went up to ten inches thick. Now I'm begining to worry a bit about burst pipes etc. So back we went to the boat. We had no idea what might have happened. So i slid back the hatch. ......................First thing i saw was a cone of ice coming from a rad valve.Oh sh*t. I have never gone back to the boat and found it so cold. We did take a few fan heaters. nothing rummled or wurred. So obviously everything was frozen solid. We put a heater facing down into the front step where the main water pump was. After about a hour we dared to turn the pump on. It ran ok. bit slow but it soon sped up. We had three more heaters on low. one in the toilet, one under the kitchen sink. And one more gently blowing onto the hot water tank. After about two hours we started to hear water dripping. It was all three radiators. The copper capilary joints had blown. Next was right up high behind the bathroom and kitchen sinks. There was a flow of water coming from between the bulkhead that had the shower mixer on. It was a double thickness bulkhead,with the pipes in between. How the hell was i going to get at that ?? So now the boat had unfrozen, it was time to do as i should have done a month previous was to drain down the whole boat. I had never done any copper pipe work in my life. But I had to learn bloody quick. Or Diane was going home. It took me nearly a week to mend all the joints. And dry the boat out. Twenty in all !! It was a big test on our relationship. My wife was amazed how I applied myself, and fixed it all up. keep your vlogs coming. you are our favourite couple. And you are made for each other. Dave and Di. xx

hi you lovely people, I think all you said is right, I had a narrowboat 5 years ago and sold it to get another one and was looking for so long and did not fine the one I wanted and now ive missed 5 years boating. I own my own company and I had my boat for 2 years before people at work new about it, then when they did they all thought I had a big power boat, I told them it was a narrowboat and you know what they all said ..no way that to slow for me. so your right also its a slow life, no rushing to get anywhere .. you get there when you get there and thats boating for you. keep on boating xx

Love your videos. I have been watching them from the beginning over the past year but never commented. Many of your points resonated with me. Just Do It! We live in a motorhome, a large but old lorry based one. We bought it, parked it in the driveway and renovated it over a year. The first night we ever spent in it was the day we locked up and gave up our home! The following day we were off to France. Conditioning and Slow Down! No shame still being in your pyjamas at 11am - that's the time I like to get up at :-). Comes from watching KZbin videos into the night!! We also follow you on Instagram (we are going,nomad) and it would be nice to see more pictures from you on there.

Hello both - great video, I agree with all you say - we moved from a large house and busy working lives to our new boat - we were fortunate to have one built to our design and love it - We have found things we could have done with now but hey they are not important, what is important is to love and embrace what you have chosen to do and sod people who think we are mad for doing it. As you say you dont know what is around the corner - life is too short. - We gave away a lot of our stuff we didnt need, its very cathartic to clear things out. People do ask " what do you do all day"- its difficult to say as each day is different - some days loads of things other days live a life we enjoy. - Carry on enjoying what you are doing, stay safe and healthy and drink beer and wine! Water at a push.

Sound advice. I keep trying to persuade Keith to downsize and let us move in to our static caravan on a permanent basis, but it's not happening yet. Slowing down is exactly what we do when we are away in the van, plans are always vague and we take each day as it comes. The main thing, as you both said, is to be comfortable and happy in your relationship and to be aware of each other and their feelings on each day.

I'm with you on all points especially you rich on no. 2 I used to be like arrrrghhhhh this is gone wrong that's broke what do I do what do I do.... Now, I'm like okay how does this work etc. Its almost like being internally calm and not being fazed anymore by the (challenges) that arise.

@@FloatingOurBoat I am now but when I first moved onboard I was a quivering blubbering mess and all it took was the boat to be leaning slightly in a strong breeze or make a strange noise and I was forced into asking everyone I could think of as to how I could stop from sinking... 😅

Looking to be empty nesters when our boys moved on. But that didn't happen when my father in law died leaving my mother in law who is medically challenged who couldn't live on her own I brought her home. That was 11 years now and at 82 she might just out live us.

Excellent advice. I really struggle with the slowing down and have very little patience which isn’t good for my poor husband (Ivan). Sadly it doesn’t seem to matter if I’m on land or water because after 20 years of working under pressure in London I’m like a coiled spring inside. I’ve been retired 18 months now so hope I’m getting better but it’s a challenge. Thank god my husband is a saint. We’re having a wobble about buying another boat at the moment! As leisure boaters it can be really expensive if you don’t use the boat regularly. I’d love to go off and cruise continuously but Ivan loves his land life and I have to respect that. He’s happy for a few weeks but then likes to get home. We’ve not made a decision and after watching your video I’m now going to look at Apolloduck. Thanks as always. I love your videos. Good luck with the inverter.

Thank you Sylvia. I'm sure you will slow down eventually, keep working on it. Good luck with the boat hunting, it sounds as if you need to keep your toe in the water so to speak to keep you relaxed. Fran

Give yourself more time to slow down, you spend a lot of years the other way, it will come.

This is a wonderful vlog...important things to ponder. A question for Fran - I found myself watching some of your earliest videos a week ago and there was mention of Fran being a pianist (as I am) - was it hard to leave your piano behind, Fran? Do you miss it? And yes....so agree...we need to watch and listen ever so much more...just to be quiet and observe the magic that is hiding all around...

Hi Patricia. Yes, it was hard leaving the piano behind. I can't claim to have been a pianist as I was only learning, but it was one of my escapes from land life. I am now trying to learn guitar although I have seen boats with pianos on board. I don't think a piano and a weaving loom would be very fair to Rich though!!

@@FloatingOurBoat Thanks for the reply, Fran xx Did not know there were such things as boats with pianos on board! Would be hard to keep in tune with all that water about! Mine is a good digital one (due to a horror of disturbing the neighbors) so it is always in tune and I use headphones so nobody hears me :-) A small digital keyboard running off solar might be something Santa might bring you some day? just a thought... Playing guitar is a lovely thing to do, once you get past the sore finger pads lol I taught myself some classical guitar many years ago and loved it. I also have a harp - (just realized, a harp is something I could bring on a NB!) All the best, Fran and Rich! xx

Hi Rich and Fran, I'm thinking about buying a thirty foot Springer just me and the dog on board. my question is are locks navigable single handed?
@FloatingOurBoat
@FloatingOurBoat 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Stuart. first of all thanks for watching and for your question. there are plenty of single handed boaters around who manage the locks perfectly well. It obviously takes a lot longer and is a case of tying the boat up in the lock then climbing out of the boat via the lock ladder to work the lock. Other boaters will often give you a hand if they are around. Have a look at 'Journey with Jono@ or Robbie Cummings. they are both solo boaters. I hope this helps Fran x
