Thank you! I use two programs together: Phonetic zoo one day and Spelling you see on the next with my son. The PZ gives him very useful rules he will be able to use for ever, and SUS gives him the chance to practice, I find.

My son has been doing Spelling you See since kindergarten, but I think we’re going to switch curriculum in the fall, as he enters grade 3. There are definitely things I like about it, but he’s missing out on some of the basic spelling understanding. When he does dictation he still gets probably half of the words wrong. Thanks for your review...it was helpful to hear what else is out there!

Mama to Four Dictation has a measurable value but so do spelling lists. We love Spelling Power for our lists. One purchase and our family is set with lists including built in review from 1st grade through life.

Spelling Power is our core spelling program. Effective with built in review, individual pacing, inexpensive. Looking to add spelling you see for my older kids to replace their penmanship as they age into middle school. Do you buy the teacher manuals for your middle school children grade 5+? I find the cost of Spelling You See to be HIGH.

I do not think you need the TM for SYS.

I really don’t think a spelling curriculum is necessary if you are doing a vocabulary curriculum and do a spelling test in addition to the vocabulary test. However, if your child is struggling to spell, or if they finish school early (I don’t let them get done before 12). Also some of these are phonics, which is separate for me

When the child high lights blends and "chunks" and diagraphs in the paragraph they are learning the sounds (phonetics) as they see how it is used in the word...That's my best guess how the kids are learning the phonics part of spelling through SYS. Just like my oldest (in Kindergarten Homeschool right now). She is a really great speller because she reads ALL THE TIME. Looking at and reading books have always been her favorite way to spend time since she was about 6 months old. So...because I've been reading to her so much and she has learned to read, she has learned some rules without even knowing...not to say phonics should not be taught (I have taught her a lot of phonetic rules), but the repitition of reading words helps a lot when you learn the rules....in this case slow down and high light a diagraph. Thanks for the review! I don't think I would want to use this as a way to teach phonics...but I would think this spelling program would complement a solid reading program that is teaching phonics.

I love your detailed reviews! 😍 which program would you recommend for a child who is in Grade 2, a proficient reader but dislikes writing and spelling (to the point that he runs away from it)? AAS or Spelling U See? Or some other program? I want to ease him into writing so he doesn't feel threatened by it...
@erica_arndt
@erica_arndt 5 жыл бұрын
You might try AAS and check out my post on making spelling fun. I don't do any formal writing in 2nd grade, sometimes i think it's just too much they do a lot of handwriting at that stage and to have to then to have to write a story or a letter it can be overwhelming. I start with IEW Level A Student Writing Intensive in 3rd grade.

So my question about Spelling You See is: They are not copying the same passage every day, so how do they retain words that they saw/wrote, 2-3 days prior, and then remember how to dictate a whole passage on Friday from memory...with only writing parts of it once?
@erica_arndt
@erica_arndt 6 жыл бұрын
They do copy the same passage everyday for one week. :) If the sections are longer, they do break it up, but they're still marking the vowels/Consonants/etc. daily so they still read the same story each day. By the end of the week they're very familiar with the passage.

If you liked the All About Spelling or BJU press how come you switched to Spelling You See?
@erica_arndt
@erica_arndt 6 жыл бұрын
Honestly they sent it to use to review, so that first year I did BJU Press (older kids) and AAS (my youngest) plus SYS because I wasn't sold on it. Once I was comfortable with SYS, we moved solely to that :)

For the BJU Spelling, is the Teacher Edition necessary? I'm comfortable with no answers but want to make sure there's nothing essential like dictation passages, etc. Thank you!
@adrianforrest177
@adrianforrest177 4 жыл бұрын
I am a teacher and used BJU spelling for second and third grade. I do not think the teacher's edition is necessary. The thing you will need to know is that Monday you normally give a pretest with the spelling words. You can make up your own sentences. I believe they recommend testing again on Wednesday. Finally, Friday you dictate the words, read a sentence and then read the word again. If you feel comfortable with it, then I wouldn't purchase the book.

What spelling program do you recommend for a kindergartner?
@erica_arndt
@erica_arndt 3 жыл бұрын
I don't do a specific spelling program for kindergarten. I use my K4/5 Kindergarten curriculum which includes beginning sounds, reading, blends, etc. But for prek and kinder kids are still learning the letters and sounds and so I don't add in a spelling program at that time.

@@erica_arndt My son is 4.5 and will be starting kindergarten this fall. I don't know if you're familiar with it or not but we started the ordinary parents guide to teaching reading when he was 3 and he's reading now on a first grade level. I've watched him spell words with magnets phonetically so I really think he could do it but I keep hearing people say they don't do spelling with kindergarteners. What do you think? I'm planning to use All About Spelling with him.
@maisieliberty1319
@maisieliberty1319 3 жыл бұрын
@@franny5295 people usually wait til after kindergarten or first grade because developmentally for most children that is better, for their ability to think abstractly, and to have less writing whilst their fine motor skills are developing. It can also be confusing for some kids to learn to read alongside spelling especially the younger kids. But if your son is ahead and ready to move on not just curriculum level wise but his ability to understand the information, then level one of all about spelling would be a good one to go on to at this point in his English language skills journey. :)
