I've been using a $20 Hamilton Beach stick for a few years. It has the standard blender attachment, a whisk attachment that can make small amounts of whipped cream in under two minutes, and a small food processor attachment (fully enclosed) for making pesto, bread crumbs, salsa, etc. All three attachments were included in the $20 model. It has two speed buttons, and you hold one of them down to operate it. I've never had trouble taking it apart, and it's never come apart during operation.

@@teklife I only have one little nitpick about it. The whisk whisks. The immersion blender blends. But the mini food processor is a little disappointing on hard cheeses in the particular model I have. You can certainly grate hard cheeses instead, but I find that tiny spheres often give a better aesthetic than fast-melting rasped cheese. The spheres are typically made in a blender or food processor. But for some reason (the sharpness of the blade and/or the speed) it's just really hard to get nice small spheres. They tend to come out at about 1/16", whereas 1/32" would be ideal. I think the blade is the culprit. On a typical food processor, you have to be really careful handling and cleaning the blade, because it's usually scary sharp. Even if you bring your pay-attention level up to a 6 or 7, you might still cut yourself. On mine, I've never been cut, and frankly I'm at a 4 or 5 in the carefulness.

Which one handles frozen foods and ice the best? Which ones let you run the longer than 15 secs before you have to rest it? Which ones have other attachments that are useful? I know it's not viable to ask which ones konk out after 10 uses since none of them were used long term. (A common complaint with some of the lower end ones was that they died young.) Also some complaints were that some blenders didn't have enough power to make mayo. Having spent so much money buying all these blenders to test, it would have been cool to get a review that covered more bases instead of just "this one is light, fits well, and you don't need all those other speeds". I would have liked for you to have picked out the top 3 and then talked about the pros and cons, what they did well, what they didn't do well compared to each other, etc.

I have the Braun MQ505 that they recommend. It really is nice. My old immersion blender was also a Braun and I loved it. It lasted at least 18 years before the stick blender started to slip and make a nasty racket. The old one came with a little cup chopper that I still occasionally use to make chive oil. That said, this new one is WAY nicer to use, especially when blending smaller amounts of sauce or soup. The old one would splatter unless you had enough sauce to fully submerge the bell. The new one blends smaller amounts without the mess. They definitely improved from the older model.

@@donotreportmebro I wouldn't use an immersion blender to crush ice or anything hard frozen. If that's something you do regularly, a Ninja style blender would be better. Tor, have you got a bamix? I’ve been considering getting one, but then there’s some fairly mixed reviews out there. Adam mentions this at 0:54 _“some of these the wands fell right off into the other ones the ones wouldn’t come off at all so they were horrible to clean…”_ And I can’t looked at the Cook’s Illustrated review (as it’s behind a paywall and I don’t live in the US so would it be much use to me?), but in the preview they say this: _“Another model’s wand didn’t detach, also a no-go.”_ www.cooksillustrated.com/articles/382-testing-immersion-blenders Wirecutter are a bit more forgiving: _“That said, more expensive models (such as those by Bamix) and those made for commercial use typically have wands that don’t come off. In part, the fixed wands may be why these pro-grade blenders tend to be more durable than home models; they simply have fewer pieces that can break._ _“In testing, we found that it had a comfortable handle and easy-to-push buttons, but sadly the blender failed to create a great vortex and therefore was notably slow in blending soup and smoothies. Surprisingly, it was the worst in our puree test, leaving a ton of fiber in the sieve.”_ thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-immersion-blender/ Saying all that, it really doesn’t seem that much of a bother to clean and it can be immersed all the way up to the handle. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZe7l2mLerNriq8

But for many, there may be a first evaluation of heavy duty vs small quick light available for the home kitchen (that's what Test Kitchen has chosen here). So you need to know what you want that tool to do. I'm replacing some blenders because the manufacturer has compromised heavy duty, strength, longevity for the lighter, quieter plastic-nylon gears. The Breville All-in-one gets unfairly dunked in this review on IMO, as it is very well built and comes with a fantastic kit if you want to save space. It comes with a 6 Cup Food Processor attachment (with chopper, slicer, and grater blades) that can take the place of your food processor for the same countertop footprint. That's why its variable speed dial is important. But I'd also have to disagree with the review in that I find variable speed very useful and use it all the time. When puree'ing small amounts of food, or thick pastes, for example, using too high a speed will just expel the food out of the blade well. Using a lower speed helps break down the food without displacing it. It's also useful for doing the initial break down of large chunks when you're trying to cream soups or make cashew cream, as lower speeds not only create less risk of splashing when it's still in a watery + chunky state, but they also don't create such a strong vacuum force that pulls the blender towards the bottom, allowing you to "stir" the blender around and to homogenously break down all the chunks and then you can move up to higher speeds when "stirring" with the blender is no longer necessary and you're just going to keep the blender in one place so the vacuum effect isn't as much of an issue.

The Breville is actually really nice and comes with really handy accessories (e.g., food processor, whisk). The speed adjustment knob on the top is not a real issue and the trigger location is actually a great spot.

Works for me too. I've actually used mine to mix the oil back into peanut butter. It doesn't like it too much, but it still gets it done with a few pauses so I don't burn up the motor.

I must have bought the wrong braun Because the one I But was $99 and has the most irritating safety feature on it wherever is it where every single time you use the damn thing you have to push the safety button. Every time you tilt the handle Or take more than a few seconds to squeeze the trigger you have to keep hitting the safety lock button.

How does the VITAMIX immersion blender fare in your tests?
@ekaterinakinsky9923 жыл бұрын
Thank you, I used to follow it religiously when Mr. Kimbal was the main guy. But I love the way Bridget and the other lady took over.. However, not all of us live in New England where we have a summer "cottage" and loads of cash to spend. It would be helpful to have the reviews consider several price points like they used to in the past. I can't afford 59 dollars on an immersion blender i'll probably use only in Thanksgiving and maybe Christmas dinner. Please include popular brands I can find in places like Wal-Mart or Target.

Hey ATK, now that Vitamix has an immersion blender on the market, just might need to do this testing again? Maybe?
@brightmong84783 жыл бұрын
Mmm I've checked out the website, and the Vitamix $150 has minimal attachments and the additional attachments are kind of pricy. A whisk attachment (not included?! / $20) and a food processor attachment ($50) will bring the price up to $220. At that price range you have the Braun 9, which comes with more attachments and a comparable wattage. But if I'm wrong, please do tell. I'm trying to decide myself. I'm looking at the 700 watt range for grinding meat, curious if you think that that is foolish.

I’m okay with a Hamilton Beach 59762. 2 speeds from 2 adjacent push buttons. After 5 years the motor part was still fine but the drive shaft on the business end with the blades fell apart. Had to buy whole new unit because I couldn’t get just that part (didn’t try too hard: maybe it was available separately?). Will try the Braun if this one dies soon.

I've been waiting for this one! About 4 years ago I had a Cuisinart. The plastic collet that held the whirling metal shaft just shredded itself. Such a stupid and cheap decision that has cost them my business for life. Hello Braun!

I bought that immersion blender after you recommendation. It was a piece of junk! After just a minute of using it the motor got so hot 🔥 that i couldn’t hold it any longer. Even an hour after unplugging it, it was very warm to the touch. One of the most immersion blenders shouldn’t be that poor of quality.

Well they did talk about the speeds being the same.. They never mention torque.. A bigger motor etc. Can mean a more powerful motor that won't heat up or stall.. They are counting the stuff that's not the most important..

I wish they would discuss the recent findings (2014) of stick blenders leaking chlorinated paraffins (flame retardants) into the processed food. I wanted to buy the winner but, unfortunately, it comes with a warning to be carcinogenic and harmful for reproduction. This can become even more relevant if the blender is used to prepare baby food.
@davekalish26532 жыл бұрын
what warning? California Prop65? Good luck finding anything without that warning.
