Hi Jessi! In a previous video kizmit was called a hystrix cristata, but now she is hylo critsia here. What have you observed in Kizmit that made you realize she was a different species? In this case, was it very subtle? Thanks!
@animalwondersmontana
@animalwondersmontana 7 жыл бұрын
Sabrienne Alice Olanio No, no change totally my mistake!! It should be Hystrix cristata. I think a combination of autocorrect and not thinking clearly because of a concussion at the time of recording this episode is the culprit for not catching this blatant mistake. Sorry guys!!

I've gotten too close to a northern Minnesota porcupine - it politely turned around and bristled it's whole back to me, and slowly charged me while chanting some porcupine grunts - it was beautiful kind of like a turkey fanning it's tail ... I'm always happy to have wild porcupines around where I live

I had no idea old world porcupines didn't have barbed quills. The quills do still pull out and get lodged in the skin of other animals, don't they? I've seen pictures of lions with porcupine quills in their face, are those quills just easier to remove?
@animalwondersmontana
@animalwondersmontana 7 жыл бұрын
waitingfor2020 They do still come out sometimes, but it takes a lot more force to go in and only comes out if the quill is lodged deep in the predator and the hold is stronger there than in the porcupine's follicle.

I love animalWonders. It is a great time we live in, that anyone can observe animals and learn about them and their behaviors on the web. These videos are so well done and informative. It is nice you can see the people involved genuinely care about the well being of these animals and try to keep their lives as natural as possible in captivity. This is why the internet was made. Thank you for your hard work and dedication to the animals and to expanding education. It is meaningful to those who would not otherwise have the means or experience. A personal favorite of mine is the video about the difference between snakes and legless lizards!

Pyro7693 It's likely they would. And porcupines don't really do "backing down" very well, so we're not going to risk an introduction since it's not necessary for either. Kemo is solitary and Kizi already has her social needs met with the cavies.

Do porcupine have one set of quills, or can they regrow them?
@animalwondersmontana
@animalwondersmontana 7 жыл бұрын
KnightsRadiant They can regrow them as many times as they lose them. They're just modified hairs, so just think of them as hair like other mammals, a new one starts growing as soon as the current one gets old and falls out or is pulled out from a predator.
