There's a Russian lady on youtube who had an even smaller apartment, literally bathroom+toilet and then a bedroom/ living room/ kitchen all in 1 room, she also had a small balcony that she put windows and a roof on. She completely renovated it and made me jealous that she turned the slum into a hotel suite XD but saying that, I am pretty sure she had an interior decorater friend.

This is brutalist Soviet architecture. It is incredibly simple and ugly by its very ethos. However, you would not think that a few cans of paint for the exterior and the hallway would be all that expensive, would you. After all they took the time to paint the trees along the sidewalk, so that drunk people at night will not drive into them. It's an interesting little video, and you kids are very sweet for showing it to us. Thank you.
@j_freed5 жыл бұрын
By the way, I did stay in a Soviet apartment back in the 90s, in Prague 5. It had that tiny little elevator that looked very sketchy. so I got a little look at the way every day people live in the Czech Republic, and I have to say there's some things about the way Czech people are and live their life that's very sweet, even though things were tough under communism and obviously a lot of them are still poor today. The suburbs of Prague or similar to East European village culture, just more people and uglier surroundings. But not all ugly.

I was about to write that I stayed at a similar Ukrainian apartment in Kyiv, but then I thought "Of course you did." All former Soviet controlled countries are filled with apartments like this. When I first arrived, my host told me the key was under the door. When I didn't find anything under the door, I figured that we may be hitting a language speed bump, so I looked around the front of the building and saw a loose rock beside a concrete flower container. Sure enough, the key was under the rock. And the elevator ride up was a hoot. The lights would flicker and it made sounds like tennis shoes in a dryer. You crossed fingers hoping it wouldn't conk out between floors.

Thank you for sharing. As an American in California, we are so spoiled! I think our economy is driven by people’s “wants” rather than “needs”. A Democracy is great for competitive businesses, but I believe we can loose our way in striving to obtain more and more “things”. Watch most American movies or videos and you will see the kids rooms are so full of junk, if you added up the cost it would be I hundred-of-thousands...it’s really TOO MUCH! Our closets are as big as these apartments! I’m a minimalist so I find the hoarding lifestyle sad! When you have less you appreciate things more.

The garbage “chute” was interesting but not very hygienic. I’m just hoping that the apartment is nice and warm in the winter. Thank you for the video. It’s nice to see how other cultures live. Just a note to share. Where I live, the indigent/low income people live in pretty nice, modern, apartments and our city taxes pay for that 😠. The people pay little or no rent.
@BretskiPeterson4 жыл бұрын
the place was pretty typical for a Ukrainian flat and most of these older places have a central boiler for heat. The radiator looked newish, but the heat is usually pretty good. Most places that I've stayed in that were in older buildings, I had to regulate the heat to keep it from being too hot during the winter. Newer flats have their own boiler... like a small on-demand gas fired boiler for heat and hot water. The bathroom is also very typical... tub with handheld shower... pedestal sink and a shitter... tile on everything)))
