@SailHub Yes!!! I recently bought the french Renault cousin of your german Porche a "Patago 39". It's less fancy but very similar also 1 of 3 that I know off. The plan is to sail it this summer back to Belgium for a major electrical refit this winter. I'd love to also gradually upgrade the interior over time. Your content and the knowledge you share will be very beneficial!

@XArthieX that sounds amazing.. just did some Googling, very different boats here but man, she looks ready to take on a war at sea. I dare say she will stand up to more than ours, looks like a really really good sea going vessel right there! Sounds like a great plan too, be sure to let me know if we can help with anything, may even see you at some point, we will be driving up and down a bit and our ferry drops us in Amsterdam.

The Spirit 72 is magnificent with fabulous wooden boat building skills. You've found a great boat, hope you can do your best work on it. As regards moving it, I would look for a suitable trailer even then the hull only is probably around 7 tonnes? Perhaps in the UK see what options you have to get it towed, there are networks where trucks move around looking for jobs, some people take an interest in moving unusual loads. Although the canals are probably the cheapest method, at least in Europe.
@SailHub
@SailHub 2 күн бұрын
Hey Tom! Thanks mate, yeah the boat is great and we are really excited!! The move has problems as it’s associated with moving through several countries. This outs the price right up there despite its weight of only 3.5T. The weight sounds good, and the shallow height too (no keel or rudders) but a beam of 3.8 that can cause the transportation problems apparently. Basically all of the import export paperwork, time at several places on the journey pushes the price really high, so high that it’s just not an option. In fact it’s insane. So, it’s going in the water! We have a plan now which is fab… We just have to implement it 😂
@Tomm9y
@Tomm9y 6 сағат бұрын
@@SailHub That sounds like a 'convoi exceptionnel'! With a beam of 3.8, perhaps she'll be on her side for any road journey. I guess it depends on your route to Scotland and your build site, would be easier under cover. A benefit of the lifting keel is that you don't need much of a slip or tidal range to get her afloat at end of the build, should open up more and cheaper options. The first leg to the canal/river sounds like the trickiest. I can't imagine Irish ingenuity, flexibility or accommodations in the local approach to the issue. I'm sure it will work for you.

Great start to a new adventure! I'll be following along for sure. Getting a bare hull from Switzerland to Scotland is an adventure in itself. I think you mentioned the French canals, but the Rhine is also navigable from the Swiss border at Rheinfelden all the way to Rotterdam. A 20hp outboard on an improvised bracket, plug some holes, a bit of ballast and away you go. Best of luck from Pete in Wanaka, New Zealand.

I've seen the ad for this hull online when searching for alu yachts myself. I am excited to see it on KZbin and that you will document the built process! Really interested in your interior design but mostly happy it will be done by some skilled people. Often you see some weird or low quality interior when done by the owners themselfs which is a shame for such an expensive yacht. Best of luck with this amazing project and thank you for documenting the process!

KZbin made a great suggestion at last! Nice project, I have an aluminium Koopman 35 from 1982 with wooden topsides and interior, no idea who built it though. Being in Spain the issue becomes getting materials and finding the skills to do the work I cannot do. Previously I worked for VT, Pendennis and ANT which took me to Blohm & Voss and Lurssens as a Marine Electrician / Electronics technician and having spent time working on a wide variety of small craft and super yachts I know good design and workmanship when I see it. I'm imagining your project will be a cross between Sampson Boat co. and Distant Shores, so my only advice is "Keep It Simple" as I can see you are already very quality minded.
@SailHub

Hi, how nice to hear this, such compliments! I really hope we can live up to this! Sounds like quite the adventure you have been on! Koopman’s are just wonderful boats! Super lucky there chap! As for our plan, we don’t really do simple, it’s just not in the genes… but, we’ve struggled to enjoy a lot of sailing for to working on things so this time we’re gonna make sure we get the sailing and traveling in. The quality can wait sometimes I guess!

I got all of the CAD from Gaastmeer who supply KM with the cut panels for the build - they were super helpful. Anyhow, we did some scans of the 1st German 39 and we have a CAD hero working on them for us, so far it look promising 🤞 Great to have you in the journey with us and thanks again! 👍

You could of made a plaster and glass mould of the other bulb ,25 - 50 mm thick would have been enough then thicken it up when you got home. this would have given it some drying time as well . i have made bulbs using this method before and it works . mixing the plaster and raw glass no resin just allow time for all the moisture to be gone . then place the mould in a sand bed for pouring . anyhow that's a great looking boat you have found , looking forward to see it being finished off. Aluminium is the best! But, LiFePO4 batteries on average have energy density of ~120 Wh/kg. That of diesel fuel is almost 12,000 Wh/kg. So to replace one jerrycan of 20 liters = ~17kg of diesel, you'd need 1,700kg fully charged batteries. For that reason I have serious doubts if going for fully electric is wise; I'd go for hybrid (like Distant Shores) if you plan to make ocean voyages.
@SailHub
@SailHub 3 ай бұрын
Yup, I presume you think we don’t know about energy density. Our journey is to document the evolution of electric. In our eyes it doesn’t work yet and we intend to get as close as we can to making it work by building an ongoing prototype test bed. We’re putting the reality out there for people to see so the fact is, we’ve got a something in common, your comment is exactly what we’re showing. It’s not the usual build and we’re thinking outside the box in every way possible to reach for better efficiency etc. it’s an interesting journey and to date we’ve just been planning the first year! Anyhow, it would be cool to hear your thoughts as we progress, Cheers, Chris

If I am not mistaken the hull was offered by KM some time ago, I recommended it to some friends. Interesting that it is popping up again. Think carefully about where you want to continue building, transportation to the canals is also expensive. I have built a Reinke 13M myself in ten years and a closed hall would save you a lot of time. Try to make contact with a foundry to cast the lead, we were admitted there during the company vacations with a casting master. lots of good boats done in aluminium , they can withstand a lot of punishment if one misses the water ever ,and land on a reef or other inconveniently dry object . my only sail on one was a bit off putting , a roughly made all out race boat ,looked very dodgy ,and actually the keel fell of a few weeks after that ,middle of a race [ they lost that race ,even though the weight reduction could theoretically have been advantageous , the mast slowed them down ,as it was creating a lot of drag ,underwater .]. You may have to bend the all electric a bit ,put a donkey in it ,to motor through the french canals and up to your build home .

Yeah, the tillers an interesting thought. It’s simplicity we’re looking at and weight saving which is quite surprising. I guess there are a number of large boats on tillers and ours isn’t all that heavy, the other thing is the twin rudders, this should massively reduce tiller efforts. I think we will run a test first, I’m not into gung ho descisions!
