Our universe is kind of a paradox-it's a grand place to live, but it contains an anomaly that should be scientifically impossible. Join Hank for today's episode of SciShow and learn all about why our universe shouldn't actually exist.
SciShow has a spinoff podcast! It's called SciShow Tangents. Check it out at www.scishowtangents.org

Universes form and collapse all the time with various random imbalances of matter/antimatter. Only the universes with extreme ratio imbalances are coherent for long enough for SciShow to wonder why.

The Universe wasn't created. It was always there. It embraces all time, all space and all things that have existed, exist now and will exist in the future. It has no before and no outside. Nothing existed before it that could have been its cause. Nothing exists outside it that could be the source or goal of its purpose or the reference point for its meaning. It cannot conceivably have any cause or purpose. The All is its own cause, purpose and designer. "How, therefore, shall we satisfy ourselves concerning the cause of that Being whom you suppose the Author of Nature, or, according to your system of Anthropomorphism, the ideal world, into which you trace the material? Have we not the same reason to trace that ideal world into another ideal world, or new intelligent principle? But if we stop, and go no further; why go so far? why not stop at the material world? How can we satisfy ourselves without going on in infinitum? And, after all, what satisfaction is there in that infinite progression? Let us remember the story of the Indian philosopher and his elephant. It was never more applicable than to the present subject. If the material world rests upon a similar ideal world, this ideal world must rest upon some other; and so on, without end. It were better, therefore, never to look beyond the present material world. By supposing it to contain the principle of its order within itself, we really assert it to be God; and the sooner we arrive at that Divine Being, so much the better. When you go one step beyond the mundane system, you only excite an inquisitive humour which it is impossible ever to satisfy." - David Hume, Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion, part 4

To be honest, nobody is surprised that the universe isn't abiding, it is but a matter of course, if did know all, we would need scientists no more, the whole existence of scientists is because even if we know very well a lot of things, there are a bunch of other things that we still do not understand. And we research it for tech, for example researching in to this may lead us to know how to create matter from photons without the antiparticle annihilating the particle

Neither of those things are happening for anyone with an understanding of what science is. In this very video he references the fact that this is just our best understanding at this time. And no one that knows how understanding evolves is surprised by new information.

So if matter and antimatter look the same, there could be entire regions of the universe made of antimatter, like super-clusters of galaxies separated by vast intergalactic voids ensuring they never interact with 'matter' galaxies. Or perhaps just our part of the observable universe is 'matter'. For all we know, matter and antimatter were exactly equal but slightly uneven distribution ensured that it got separated in the beginning due to expansion. Now a hypothetical question if anyone has an answer... What would happen if an antimatter black hole collided with a matter black hole of exactly equal mass?

@@CasusCantare You know that it doen't really explain ANYTHING? In fact, all it does is pushing the history of the universe to a much more distant past. More than that, there's no reason for the universe to have different laws of physics at different locations. In fact, spaces with different laws of physics can be considered their own independent universes, because those parts won't be able to interact with each other in any way (or almost any way). So, no, it does not support simulation hypothesis at all. It is, if I am not mistaken, a "Causal Fallacy". You commited it when you thought: "Computer games have identical physics everywhere. Try this: Matter and anti-matter were separated into their own dimensions at the beginning of time. All of that anti-matter still exists in a parallel (or negative) dimension. On the rare occasion when anti-matter pokes into our dimension so too does regular matter poke into the anti-matter dimension and "annihilation" occurs. The two dimensions are each other's shadow, and one cannot exist without the other. As long as the two types of matter stay in their respective dimension, things are cool. (He passes the doobie.)

I just happened across this video and your comment which is similar to the one I just added. The idea that matter and antimatter went their separate ways in the early universe would not make it impossible for antimatter to be manufactured in limited and short term instances. The same would be true for the antimatter realm. I picked the time dimension as the differentiation factor. One nice thing about that is that when annihilation occurs, the energy could be just the release of both particles potential time energy being released as they both return to zero time. That is, turned to energetic photons which reside outside of the time dimension since they move at c.

Well in maths and sciences, you can have models that aren't totally accurate, but are accurate enough for certain circumstances. For instance: Newtonian Physics is great at explainging mechanics when you aren't dealing with relative frames of references. You could use a more accurate model that is much more complex, but that's just impractical.

Perhaps these 2 types of matter clumped into large pockets, divided due to the exansion of the Universe separating them and causing them to not annihlate each other completely, and gravity pulling themselves together, and these pockets being so large and far from each other that annihalation barely persists today. Perhaps the Observable Universe is just one of many large pockets of matter, and isn’t too far-fecthed seeing as how large the Universe is expected to be.

7:51 just off the top of my head, the real issues of how the universe got started, and how it yielded a variety of particles, lays outside and "before" the universe as we know it began. That is to say there's probably a larger process and/or basic set of laws (or one law) that explains not just our universe, but other universes outside and apart from our own that we'll only be able to imagine and never really be able to put to the test. But it will be basic, it will explain our universe's laws of physics, and will be able to explain pretty much everything physical. It may be as basic as quantum gravity, but I'm thinking it's a bit, but not too much, beyond that.

The thing I keep thinking is that there doesn't need to be an asymmetry between matter and antimatter for this to happen. There only needs to be a process with a spread of possibilities that can go either way. If there's any process in the early universe that annihilates matter *or* antimatter *without* requiring them to collide, then statistically there will be some difference in how much matter and how much antimatter get annihilated by it. Fast forward a little bit and pair annihilation means that only that margin survives. In our universe it turned out that matter won, but in another universe with exactly the same rules it could have gone the other way, and things would not look much different. (That of course leaves out the question of what exactly that local annihilation process might be. Large-scale quantum fluctuations? Pockets of extreme temperature? Black holes?)

I had an idea/thought experiment. So say there are a bunch of Photons that are going to split into positive and negative quarks. Not too far away however is something that has a very large positive charge to it. When the Photons split the negative quarks are attracted to this large charge, and the positive quarks repelled. Then the negative quarks either get trapped or impact the source of the large charge and get altered/destroyed. Something like micro black hole might be able to do it? Just an idea. :)

Perhaps, in the very early universe, much of the antimatter separated from much of the matter, and 2 separate universes were formed, thereby preventing further contact between the 2 types of matter. Nearly all of the remaining kind of matter that did not match their universe, ended up being annihilated by coming into contact with the other type of mater, thereby leaving energy.
