I knew you got your Panasonic Q for a steal, Cal, but i didnt know it was that much of a steal. Holy crap. Cal mentioned using a Pico drive when using his Q. (And this might be a topic for a different podcast). What is the point of collecting the games besides just *having them* if you end up using games loaded on an sd card anyway? I can understand collecting the consoles because playing games on original hardware can't be replicated, but if you can mod the console to play game files, what's your reason for collecting games? Also, leave it to Nintendo to create cool hardware (the N64DD), put out 1 game that shows you how cool it could be, and then never does anything with it again.

An interesting question to be sure but I'll answer how I think about it - for most of my gaming I do actually end up playing my games on disks (because SD cards are actually kinda annoying for me to work with). Additionally though, a large part of my collecting does come from the "just having them" angle - I have too many Cubes than I'll ever be able to reasonably use & I happily buy games I'm not actually that interested in playing to completion. Having a lot of Gamecube stuff happens to make my brain happy & playing stuff off an SD card doesn't really effect that for me. Modding my Cubes is basically just another part of the fandom, I find all the different mods very intriguing to have & mess around with. Part of the side effect is that the main mod chip for un-region locking Cubes also just lets you read a Swiss Disk to play stuff off an SD card as well.
