Our visit to the historic coastal town of Hastings, East Sussex
See another side of Hastings with our video. - Another great day trip from London.
We start with the shale beach opposite Pelham Place and head towards the Hastings Pier, en-route we discover 'The Landing' by Leigh Dyer.
Once at Hasting historic pier we stroll around, discovering why it won the Stirling Prize in 2017, and taking the views along the Sussex coast as far as St Leonards.
A stroll back towards Hastings old town, taking in Trinity Square & The America Ground on our way to George Street. We then join the High Street before taking a slight detour along Hill Street & Croft Road, to discover the fiction home of TV detective Christopher Foyle, from 'Foyles War'.
The final stage of our day out was a wander around Rock-a-Nore and the Stade amongst the fishing boats and black huts of the fishermen.
Thanks so much for watching, and we'd love to hear from you so please leave a comment and don't forget to subscribe so you don't miss any of our travels: 🟢-

Excellent tour 🙂 I spent many a holiday there with my folks in the 60's. I remember watching a chap making glass animals in his shop window near one of the cliff railways. And I was in the dungeon of the castle in 1966 when they said they'd burried a time capsule complete with a copy of the Hastings newspaper, that will be opened in 2066. I made a mental note to go back and see that 😁

Or augmented vision, where data is projected into your line of site. We had a glimpse of the technology via a headset & headphones at the Ghent Altarpiece on our recent trip - great fun, but not 24/7. As for how long we live, well, who knows. I think my pension report had my life expectancy heading out in that direction , which I though was optimistic, but who knows...

Nice to see you visited my home town! Well, I lived in London for many years, where I was born, but I moved to St Leonards-on-Sea 24 years ago and consider it my home town now. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else! I remember seeing the fire on the pier. We were all gutted when it happened. It had a wonderful old ballroom at the end where many famous bands played during the sixties and seventies. We're hoping the pier may reopen again soon as it's been closed for a while. St Leonards was a seaside resort the well-to-do Victorians liked to visit before Brighton became more popular. Queen Victoria stayed there and liked the opera house.

Hey, We did, and we loved it but sadly didn't have enough time to get down to St Leonards, perhaps another day. We watched an old Kavanagh QC, and it had a scene in Hastings where you could catch the old pier, it looked amazing. At least it's still there, unlike many that have been lost over the years. Anyway, enjoy the rest of your time in Phapos. All the best, Gary & Janis

Have to just say the Normans never landed on that beach in 1066 firstly because they almost certainly landed along the coast near Pevensey and secondly because that beach wasn’t there then! Another of your finely crafted travel videos - top shelf in every regard :)An essential place to visit for anyone who considers themselves a serious historian - important history is everywhere in Hastings. Just a note regarding the beach ( if I may ) it may not be sand, but the stones hold many, many fossils - for the most part ancient small shells, but when broken open, there are also some interesting crystals to be discovered from time to time - a diverting and fascinating way to spend an hour or so :) Anyway, a brilliant and evocative tour around Hastings - including the ' Foyle`s War ' connection ! Well done !

@@OurWorldForYou Yes, Foyle`s War, an excellent series, with Michael Kitchen and Honeysuckle Weeks. However, they did get things completely wrong with the various Spitfire footage, in one particular shot, showing Mark 11`s taking off, which then some how turned into Mark 5`s in the air !!! Noticeable, as Mark 11`s only had machine guns in the wings, but Mark5`s were also equipped with cannon - and were not even in production at the date suggested in the episodes !!!!! Sloppy research in an otherwise brilliant series - but I imagine most people would not have noticed :) A critical eye can be a hindrance at times :( Good ho !

@@OurWorldForYou Yes, absolutely, the set designers have to have the imagination to see the possibilities, together with costume and appropriate paraphernalia :) My wife and I were quite fortunate to be visiting Chatham once when a period drama was being organised, mostly centered around the enormous rope house. We enjoyed seeing many actors at close quarters until we were shooed away off set !

You're absolutely right, it does have a feeling that parts of it are caught up in a strange timewarp - perhaps that's why it made such an excellent base for 'Foyles War' - clear the streets, and you can step right back in time. Thanks so much for the comment, stay safe, stay well.

Hi Andrew, First, thanks for watching and paying attention. Now to your comments, and I am going to be pedantic; I did not say the Normans landed on the beach, I said ' '...and this is the beach made famous by the Normans when they decided to invade in 1066' We know the battle didn't take place in Hastings, but we all know the Norman conquest as the 'Battle of Hastings' The boat is a Norman Longship; 'Metal sculptor Leigh Dyer wants to create the Norman longboat sculpture to commemorate the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings' - www.ybw.com/news-from-yachting-boating-world/plans-for-norman-longboat-sculpture-to-mark-1066-anniversary-19140 It's of the same type depicted on the Bayeux tapestry. Also, I think the Normans were really Vikings, who raided the region of France, liked it so much they hung around, that's why they're called Normans, Men of the North. And to the third point, I did not say RX stood for Hastings, I said; ..."and if you're wondering about that RX it's the fishing code for Hastings, and the surrounding harbours." Which, I hope you agree, is correct? Anyway, I am just kidding with you, I am pleased you watched the video, I'm glad you paid attention, and I'm pleased you took the time to comment. Have a great week, Gary & Janis

Andrew, I never meant to offend, and I whole-heartedly agree that local knowledge is invaluable. Actually, I would love to have sit down and a chat, it would have to be over a pint because that's the sort of person I am. How long have you lived in Hastings for? Rob, I like that film, some good parts, some a little weak. I think in places it tries to be too funny (Alan Rickman plays a great part, but the role is a little too comedic). Still, it's just a movie, not a documentary, so grab some popcorn and enjoy. Cheers, Gary & Janis

The beach wasn't there in1066! After landing at Pevensey, Will the conk transferred his non-knights to Hastings by boat and landed on the mainland of England where they later built a priory ( since demolished but remembered in Trinity Mews and Priory meadows). So much of what we have been told about Will and Harold has been twisted with the passage of time.
