Dear Shandy, please understand and I think I can speak for the majority, we want to hear everything and anything you want to share with us so never fret you’re saying too much. After all this time, has it not sunk in yet that we truly adore and love your love and love you both? You can tell us about taking out the garbage and I’d be glued to the show. It’s YOU both, we’re so lucky you’re willing to share with us. Thank you for making my week every week. Thank you for your energy and bringing light to a world that seems so dark as of late. You are loved!

Thanks for sharing Shandy! We want all the details, don't worry about talking too much! I worked for a catering company that packed a really nice basket for the bride and groom to take when the wedding is over - included two plates of food, wedding cake, bottle of champagne and some other treats because the bride and groom never get to eat during the ceremony.

I can’t imagine the stress of planning such a wedding. My husband and I got engaged and married 30 days later. We had 50 guests, married by my childhood pastor, on my friend’s mother’s property near a pond and our guests sat on tule wrapped hay bails. Our reception was at a local bar that had a cute party room, catered by our favorite local bbq restaurant. I tried on 3 dresses and my mother in law said “try this one on” and handed it over the door. It was as if it was made for me…zero alterations required other than bustle hooks. My 2 daughters walked me down the aisle. It was a beautiful day/experience.

Thank you for doing this episode! As a pandemic-era bride who has twice postponed her wedding (and was a bit in your camp of being ambivalent about a large ceremony and reception anyway), it's been tough to muster enthusiasm, even when planning for what I hope will ultimately be not just a celebration of our love but of our loved ones. Hearing that a fellow skeptic/realist felt the big day was worth it has lifted my spirits, and learning about the dress stress and other less-glamorous moments behind your fabulous event is strangely comforting as I confront my own logistical hurdles. Your story makes me hopeful that I too will feel in the end that everything was worth it. (Sidenote: I also turned to your detailed Pretty Pandas posts when we first started planning, so thank you for those as well!) A question that is perhaps more personal (please disregard if it's overly intrusive!): Andy has mentioned how difficult it was not to have his late father around on his wedding day. My fiancé and I have both lost loved ones and family members-some recently-and one of the most emotional parts of re-planning our wedding is reflecting on the people we had hoped to celebrate with who are no longer with us. We are considering various personal ways to honor and remember them on our special day, and I'm curious if/how the two of you integrated the memory of Andy's father or other deceased loved ones into your day.
@machinelevine1

I am so very sorry for your losses this past year. Of course nothing can truly replace them but I used my vows to say a few words about my late father and for me that was the best way to honor him. I hope 2022 is much brighter for you and your family ❤️

I lost my father and my partner lost both of his parents. I plan to incorporate either personalized photo cuff links or a watch for him and a locket to wear or attach to my bouquet for me. We plan to elope, so it will be nice to have these small items that are carried with us since there won’t be a table/chair to place something large on. I hope this helps, and my heart goes out to you.

I audibly gasped when you described the issue you had with your dress only a few weeks out. This was a fun listen! I appreciated the honest accounting of things you wish you had done differently. I also regret not inviting some folks (I wouldn't have even called them fence sitters - we were just trying to keep the wedding a reasonable size!), and I wish we had a videographer. It is very meaningful to look over the photos but I have some friends that took videos of the day, and I cherish those videos so much. Also totally agree with your assessment of band v. DJ - if you're going to go for a band, you really have to commit to that cost or it won't be worth it! Already looking forward to next year's "personal" Christmas episode. Happy holidays to you and all the Shandies!
@dearshandy
@dearshandy 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Katherine! We had the same reason for not inviting "fence-sitters"-if 30% of invitees hadn't RSVP'ed no, our wedding would have been substantially larger (and more expensive) than we'd planned. Not being able to predict the responses was a challenge and definitely made the guest list a gamble of sorts. And I feel you about the videographer thing-we also hemmed and hawed over a videographer because it was quite a cost, but I remembered having spoken with a bride who, like you, had regretted not getting one, so we bit that bullet (and am glad we did). For what it's worth, we've found in the years since that we look at the photos far more than the videos. (Of course, it's nice to have the option, though.) Thank you for your kind words and Happy New Year!

Loved this episode! I agree with all of your sentiments on the wedding, feelings behind choosing a dress and the overall planning of it! With exception of a band. We had a live band it was hands down the best splurge we made. I felt a DJ was a little impersonal and having live music always makes a party that much better. Funny enough, I found our wedding band at a bar, so I was able to get a real preview of them before our wedding. They knew how to get the crowd going how to change the music accordingly. My only regret was not having them play for longer. We switched to a playlist after they left and the vibe wasn’t the same. Either way, great insights from you both! Love your podcast. Looking forward to more in 2022! ❤️

When women products are more than men’s, it’s called the “pink tax”. Compare disposable razors for instance. Pink razors costs more than blue ones. Toys? Same exact toy and the girl version costs more. Crazy.

As a single shopper I can see that you might not have a crying moment. I think for brides that see their mom and or gma cry when they feel like they have on The Dress, it just becomes more emotional. I found myself crying over the first dress my daughter tried on because it becomes real, but then when it was The Dress, I cld tell and partly because I cld see how my daughter felt in it

I'm happy to hear that not crying for a wedding dress is normal. I found a place in Ottawa that sells dresses for $1,000 or less. There was one dress that looked good on me that I considered but another I tried felt like Me (if that makes sense). I asked myself 'would I regret not buying it'. The answer was yes. The wedding never happened/we broke up but I learned a lot about the wedding industry. My biggest regret was the company we hired for the photography. They put a lot of pressure on us to book them saying 'another couple is interested in that date'. Even though we cancelled 8 month before the wedding date: the $1,500 deposit of $3,000 was not refunded. I never thought to read the fine print but then again: I didn't foresee the relationship ending.

Thank you for sharing your perspective, Angie! I'm so sorry you had this experience-I have to admit, in planning our wedding, I was kind of surprised by how unforgiving a lot of vendors' terms were. I actually forgot to mention it in this episode, but a huge delay with our save the dates/invites was when I opted to switch stationery vendors. I was pressured (against my gut) into going with the first vendor and realized too late that we didn't have the same aesthetic taste/vision. I ended up walking away and losing a hefty deposit over that mistake. (To be fair, that was my mistake, and it was definitely an early stage learning experience.) Anyway, I know what you mean about the feeling with the dress. I had the exact same "Would I regret not buying this?" experience with both of my dresses, and in the end, as unromantic as that perspective was, it served me well. Even with the first dress (the one I didn't wear), I was able to sell it and not lose much $$ as it was brand new. The wedding industry is definitely intense!
@angied.2666
@angied.2666 3 жыл бұрын
@@dearshandy I'm sorry to hear that you had a similar experience. I wonder if the vendors are all very aware of the pressure couples feel to have the 'perfect' wedding and as such, compel them to sign up at once! I would also like to add that when it comes to the wedding dress: should buying a dress be romanticized? Although feelings are important. My sister kept asking me how I felt in each dress I tried on; I kept responding what I thought. When I finally described a feeling, everyone dramatically said "a feeling!??" lol That was how the dress stood out initially. Happy to hear you were able to resell the dress. :)

OMG!!! I had to stop the broadcast & write, lol. "Candide" was the first show I ever accompanied on (it was a baptism of fire) as a young musician. All those utility pieces to get from scene to scene...oy vey!!! Were you Cunégonde?? The coloratura?? You don't seem like the old lady with one hump type (lol), although she has a great role. "Glitter & Be Gay" must be a gas to sing. My personal favorite is "Make Our Garden Grow"...that 7 note musical figure can make me cry. I'll probably restart the broadcast to find you didn't do it, 🤣 but you just hit on a lovely memory. Btw, we are on our 2nd order of Magic Spoon, & have been doing Hello Fresh for 2 months. I like your hindsight on your wedding day, it was all very interesting. Your take totally confirms the reason why I've always hoped if I was in a committed relationship that we could have a wedding: this is one of the only time in your life where you have everyone that's ever been meaningful in your life in a room at the same time. (The other time being your funeral, but that's much more somber of an event and you're not exactly there to enjoy it...) Because I'm not married, I thought about organizing a 40th birthday bash for that reason, but that felt so self-indulgent... (And then COVID happened, so that idea went out of the window.)

We already feel like we're married and the only other reason would be so I can be on his works insurance and a couple of paperwork things. We're thinking of going to City Hall but are closest is 2 hours away. It would be like a 5-day thing of paperwork. If you can't tell we very much just like paperwork!

Re: the self-indulgent side of weddings, I feel the same as you do about throwing my own birthday party, or going-away party, etc., but for some reason I don't feel that way about weddings. I think it's because I see a wedding as being just as much for the guests as for the couple. (For example, I'll be getting married in France and I know my guests will be thrilled to attend.) Also, Andy HAS to watch the movie Roxanne, in particular the scene where she offers him some wine in a wine glass. P.S. I feel like I'm so on the same page with you guys about so many things....(1) I'm Jewish (not-so-practicing), and the two Jewish things I want at my wedding are the glass and the hora too. 😛(2) I want the photo booth. I just want it and am willing to cough up extra €€ for it. (3) DJ all the way - agree about the original artist version vs. cover.

Australian sizes are two sizes bigger than US. For example, an 8 in Australia is a 4 in US. An Aussie size 4 is very tiny. So that explains the wrong size of the dress; they didn’t convert the sizing. But I’m glad it worked out for you in the end!

Dear Shandy, thank you so much for sharing your Wedding story…another fantastic episode of Dear Shandy….I have often heard that picking a wedding planner becomes the most important decision and it can make or break your wedding …. What was your experience? Happy New Year 2022 💫

Hi Helen! I've heard this as well. I actually spoke on the phone with a handful of planners and ended up letting my gut choose based on those conversations (versus mainly basing the decision on portfolios/resumes). Sojourner (our planner) felt the most like my kind of person, if that makes sense? It felt like a conversation with a friend, and I knew just from chatting with her for 10 minutes that we had the same vision and I wasn't likely to get pressured into costs/extras I didn't need. In the end my gut didn't lead me astray. Thanks for your kind words and Happy New Year!

Oh my gosh I ADORE you guys…. Andy: “… and I think possibly the greatest shopper on earth” ♥️🥰🤣😂 Amazing!!! … Also, no you guys are NOT alone in not wanting a day all about you!!! I’ve never wanted a proper wedding myself and that is exactly the reason I’ve always identified as I’ve gotten older! Also, I would dread the planning AND narrowing down of the guest list as I have lived and worked in many cities and countries! But long story short… it is not a bad thing or strange to feel that way! With all that said, I do love attending friends weddings!! ☺️♥️

Your advice as well as your example have helped me so much, not only in my romantic relationships, but in friendships and familiar too. I am sure you'll be the leading relationship podcast and the big names are gonna make a queue to be featured in. Love you, Shandy. P.S. why don't you try a collab with fellow Canadian bachelor fantake?

Last thing, I got “The Thin Man” special champagne 🥂 glasses you can get online that are like the ones in the famous movie by that name. They are wide and have plenty of room for any nose.

How do you feel about kids at weddings/yours specifically? Did you invite them? And how did you decide on who to extend +1 invitations to?

In one of Sharleen's blog posts she mentioned +1s were extended to individuals that were either married, engaged to, or living with a partner.

Did you order the dress in Australian sizing or US sizing? Au/UK sizing is 2 sizes different to US :)

I really liked the frank discussion of Influencer weddings. There are more people with over a million KZbin subscribers than coal miners in America. It's the new economy but it is shrouded in secrecy.

I know I'm being "nit picky", but it would be so nice to see Andy wear anything but those white t-shirts. He has a nice body. They would look so good with coordinating colors. Just saying a suggestion for us shandy watchers.
