I'm here now and wouldnt recommend it at all. Dusty, industrial, in (de)construction, soulless. Outer neighborhoods of Hanoi (accessible by metro) are also off the beaten track but way livelier and fun.

I just arrived in HP for a very short stay to visit a friend. I can't wait to leave. Within the first two hours of arrival I was nearly run down half a dozen times by aggressive scooter drivers. Walking around the center of the city I was met with numerous unfriendly looks by strangers. Motorcycle cops and private security guards everywhere. There is something wrong with this city....a vibe I do not like. Thankfully, my stay will be short.

Have you been to other cities in Vietnam? If so, I’m curious of your impression of those areas. Yes Haiphong doesn’t get nearly the amount of tourists HCMC or Hanoi get, but I’ve never felt how you’re describing.

@@djinvn I can't say I have a favorite. But, I certainly have seen enormous changes. Thirty years ago the tallest building in Saigon was perhaps 15 floors.
