[Verse 1] When I was a little girl Like really little, like 8 or so I was playing in my father's study A place in the house I wasn't supposed to go My father fancied himself a sailor His study was filled with nautical decor He kept a boat in a bottle on the top of a shelf And it shattered on the ground when I slammed the door [Pre-Chorus] I told my mother everything I told her I was so, so sorry She told me, "don't cry When he comes home tonight We can make everything okay This is all we have to say [Chorus] "We don't remember a boat in a bottle It must've fallen off its shelf alone We know you loved it, we're so sad it's broken But neither one of us was even home" And it's our word Yes, our word Against his [Verse 2] So I hid screw-ups from my father Made up school awards to please my mom Whatever made the steak taste better Whatever kept the waters calm I was told to keep their secrets And in turn they'd keep mine As I got older, I got dumber I couldn't help but cross the line [Pre-Chorus] Three times I nearly wrecked my life Three times I nearly came to ruin Three times went crying to my parents Who said they'd make it go away Yes, this is all we had to say [Chorus] "We never rented a house in Sedona We didn't see Camille the day she died We haven't been on our boat in some years now So we don't care what you found inside" And it's our word Yes, our word It's our word Yes, our word Against theirs [Bridge] Somebody was paid to make it go away Everyone was paid to make the problems go away Doesn't matter who gets screwed, or who is blamed Or what you need to do to clear your name An inconvenient truth can be easily erased [Verse 3] When I was 26 I was living in New York I developed some fun habits Put my white blood cells to work I remember it so clearly I was home alone on a Tuesday night To level out, I'd popped some downers But couldn't seem to get my mind right I drew a bath and slipped into it And suddenly became aware I couldn't keep my head above water I took a final gasp of air [Pre-Chorus] And as I laid there helplessly A million different thoughts came to me I saw my parents hearing the news "Your only daughter drowned today" I thought about what they might say [Chorus] "Our daughter, Judith? No, she moved to Austin She's very happy there, or so we hear She's always been so goddamned independent The years go by and now we barely see her" "Our daughter, Judith? You must be mistaken You mean the girl we raised as if our own? We loved her so much she felt like our child But eventually we had to send her home" It'd be their word Only their word It'd be their word Only their word On its own

I like that in the song when Judith is imagining what her parents might say upon hearing that she drowned, that she sings "It'd be their word, only their word, on its own." because it's not against someone like previously, they don't even need to lie. It really shows that they're compulsive liars and lie even when unneeded.

I was suicidal once, the same thoughts came to my mind. First thing my abuser would do is say something insane.. like they loved me or they had no idea why I'd want to kill myslef at all... essentially erase the truth of what happening my life. If I died, my words wouldn't mean anything, it be only their word - on its own and that thought made me sick. AS a teen who was raised IN A NOT SO Functional household, There's a lot of truth in that a parent/abuser may lie about something so crucial even if it doesn't seem like they have to lie, when bad people are pushed against a wall and a hard choice when their reputation could take any kind of hit, it's only natural they'll spew some lies to make it all better for them. That said, I cared about them getting the last laugh and changing my narrative.. beause there's nothing more disturbing than your thoughts feelings and sense of self being extinguished when you can do nothing to stop it.

the part of the song that always fucks me up is "an inconvenient truth can be easily erased," which is then followed by the story of her near death experience. she realized that if her parents saw her and her death as an 'inconvenient truth,' they would simply erase it by essentially disowning her as ever being their 'real child' in the first place.

Man, I love how Judith in the court scenes really gives off that "rich person who doesn't care about other people" vibe so strongly. Like, just looking at her I get a visceral sense of, "She's lying, and nothing will make her stop lying, even if her lie falls apart she will continue lying, she is selfish to a stubborn degree."

@@ajax068 I don't think it's impossible, but I also don't think she has to. Judith is an adept manipulator, and I feel like at this point in the story she's leaning more towards framing the truth in ways that will get her the desired outcome than lying outright. But she could be; I don't doubt she would. What do you think she's lying about, though? I'm curious.

I think she lying on her parents character specifically. That they're horrible, lying, manipulative, people that only care about their image, and taught her to be this way. When the truth might be that they're decent human being that did the best they could in raising her. I mean she even says "doesn't matter who gets screwed or who is blamed do what you need to do to clear your name an inconvenient truth can be easily erased" and the inconvenient truth here is her parents character. Remember the facts on Judith's character are she a manipulate lair and she wants Jase back. This whole story right here is a way to put her in a victim light so Jase feels sorry for her.

I know this is a bit old at this point, but I think part of the point is that beyond gaslighting each other (and those around them), they gaslit themselves to view themselves as better people. You can see this in the several shifting lies in a row that they would have told if Judith died (Judith is elsewhere it can't be her, you must be mistaken, she wasn't really our daughter but we cared about her, we treated her well but had to send her away anyways). This can also be seen in Judith herself in her pretending to be Natalie, a better version of herself. It made her feel better about herself. You can even hear in the song "A Better Version" that she says she loved the version of her with him, rather than saying that she loved him or loved being with him. He was really more of a tool for her to see herself in a better light and likely avoid the guilt and shame that was her reality.

I think the reason why Judith said "literally everything" was because her parents raised her wrong. Instead of teaching her to own up to her mistakes and face the consequences for her actions, she was taught to lie and cover herself, to do anything to paint herself in a good light. She was never punished which enabled her. The first time she probably ever faced consequences was when she nearly drowned after being careless with drugs. Her inability to own up to her past and her need to seem perfect is what essentially doomed her relationship in the beginning.
@toadstoolsandtaverns3319
@toadstoolsandtaverns3319 Жыл бұрын
The thing is, she _did_ drown. She died for 3 minutes. It took literal death to learn her actions have consequences, yet still kept up a lie for 2 years because that’s what she was taught and that’s all she knows
@citrineconjurer
@citrineconjurer 2 ай бұрын
Beyond not being punished, she was literally instructed to lie. With that ship in a bottle, where everything started, she immediately told the truth and expressed remorse. It was basically a perfect way of handling the situation. Then her mom told her to lie about it instead and put her down this path. Without that parental influence, she might have become an entirely different person. That doesn't excuse what she did, but it does help explain the why behind her.

i love that you had the mom do the talking first when “hearing the news” because i think the mom very much was kind of the. brains of this operation. and then the father was the one who said the one about her not being biologically theirs because it puts distance between him and her and i think he was a very cold parent and very business and not family. i think the mother was cold to but in the mother’s eyes i think judith was *hers* and to the father i think his idea of family and fatherly love was that he loved and owned judith *’s* successes and would disown judiths shortcomings, therefore disowning a part of her. and i think he would consequently disown her death (drug related and all). which is why i love we watch him say, like. zoom in on his mouth and reeeaally watch him as he says: *“as if our own”* clearly drawing his line in the sand that judith is not his. and therefore her mistakes are not *his* . it’s *as if* she were his. but she’s not *his* where the mother denies that judith is even dead because i do think the mother cares. the mother is calculating and cold but i think she loves judith even if it’s in an unhealthy creepy controlling way. and i think her denying judith is dead is the reason she can be so cold and unfeeling looking with the cop. so yeah. i think you did a great job with that part and i wouldn’t have done anything different had i storyboarded it myself!! i love love love how this turned out i think you did an amazing job (i’m so sorry if this sounds patronizing or condescending i don’t mean it like that at all) and you really brought the song, and the story of this song contextually in the musical, to life in a beautiful way *also:* your use of color was stunning and i loved it. super smart (like, the door of her cheating mom lining up with the door and color scheme of her apartment the night she comes home and she’s not doing alright) (and how in court she was at first a color shade that was pretty close to her parents and then to the third court scene she’s actually toughly the same color she was before but her parents are darker so she stands out more and looks either more independent or defiant) *also also:* i really love how judith looks to her mom when they tell her father about the boat in a bottle and judith smiles and then judith mimics herself, doing the same thing, in the third court shot when she’s staring down the judge

@@koilynn7450 Hey, just a note to you! If you’re gonna listen, listen to the podcast- it’s a podcast musical, which basically means the script and songs are recorded on podcasts. I made the mistake of listening to the soundtrack and realizing after that the full thing was only a few clicks away the whole time. Just look up “36 Questions the musical” and the podcasts should come up on whatever platform :))

This is incredible!!! I love the different colors you used on each scene and the way you switched from trial to trial and had her to continue to voice the story was so great! It was also such a nice detail that we never saw her parent’s eyes, I think their eyes being hidden really shows that they’re deceitful and cold people in contrast to the daughter that they failed to raise. Really good job and so much credit to you for doing a whole six minute song omg!

Omg I read a bunch of comments and noticed how you made the Father be the one to claim Judith wasn’t even their daughter. Like everyone noticed, she seemed closer to her mother (especially with how this is animated), and it can look like the mother, upon hearing of her daughter’s death in New York, might just be genuinely shocked because she didn’t know Judith was even in New York, and perhaps be in denial of her death. On the other hand, it’s the Dad who would create the lie that Judith isn’t even their real daughter

My favorite part is how we never get to see the eyes of the parents, the windows of the soul. In my head it’s some reference to how they don’t have a soul, and how the daughter never actually saw her parents as parents. Just strangers who would make up for her mistakes.

I love that in this animatic even without the father's eyes you can see the... the distrust in the way he holds himself. The insecurity and everything from someone who has likely been gaslit for so long and knows they're likely lying but... he has nothing he can rebut with.

↪For any1 that didn't get it from the podcast, main character Judith Fords backstory is sad. She was raised by a wealthy family in arizona. Went to university, studied to be a writer in college so she moved to the big city, while she was living in new york she became a babysitter when she came home form babysitting one night, she Took drugs and took a bath, where she drowned she was found three minutes later and brought back to life. she also didn't expect Jace to be okay with her real Life story, and her parents influence on her as she says in this quote .( for the record it was right before q11) "I want to take advantage of this perfect moment... (what's perfect about it?) You are here. I'm here. I told you .. 'everything' ... and you didn't push me out of the car."↩ Because lets be honest, having baggage and possibly having something to do with A death (Camile) is a bit of a deal breaker.

Ok so I don't know if anyone else noticed this but in this animatic, the daughter seems to have a somewhat close relationship with the mom. (Idk the characters names, sorry!) Like in the beginning when she told the mom and the mom kept the secret. That might've started a sorta strong bond between them because in the last court room scene, for a brief moment she looked at her mom then smerked. Also when the parents found out their daughter died in the daughters thought, the mom has her lips parted a bit before they lied, unlike the dad, implying that she actually cared for her daughter. Idk if this is intentional or not but still, great attention to detail!!

Never seen the musical but the vibe I get is from Judith. The father: Cold, angry type, cares more about reputation and items then his own family. Mother cheats due to most likely not really being in love with the her husband also she most likely lied that neither was home more for herself then Judith cause she would be the one to blame for letting her go where she isn't meant to. Judith always afraid of parents being angry, and just wants to feel rewarded by her mother and not just some screw up I think its guilt that gets to her and all she wanted was to be loved and rewarded but it slowly eats at her. As she got older she was impulsive and angry and most likely burnt out took to drugs and alcohol way to cope it felt like she could do no wrong intell things go wrong. She goes to her parents cause she didn't wanna face her own actions and choices, and by the point of 26 she is alone prob screwing over and screwing up all her friends she had isolating herself not only for the trauma of having to deal with the 3 situations that keep her up at night and panic, guilt and anxiety becoming too much to handle so she takes downers but the side effects don't kick in fast enough for her so she makes another impulse decision and she gets kinda "When you die reality kicks you in the ass" type thing and realizes her parents don' t love her they just want to save their own ass and they'd do it at any cost. But obv habits kick in and she still lies cause she still didn't wanted to be rejected or shamed for what her family is and who she was

Angelica, Your skilled talent, creativity, educational ability, and family dynamics shine strongly. "Back in the day" true life with the various pain(s) that you eloquently highlighted was totally hidden behind closed doors. Family members have suffered generationally. Children growing up in violent homes at extreme risk of physical harm. They are introduced to alcohol and drugs. Sometimes, there appears as though there is no safe person to confide in or that can help the child grow in a safe environment. We learn that these behaviors repeat themselves. I applaud you for your honesty, openness, and ability to visualize the abuses that occur in relationships and how an individual may struggle not knowing a healthy response. Your art paints a clear picture of what happened "back in the day" for decades; even today. Change starts with awareness, thank you for your strength to be so demonstrative.
