So lovely to hear about these wonderful books! You have reminded me to prioritize Pinocchio this year. I read it a few years back and loved it so much. It has such a traditional fairytale feel to it. Our favorite readalouds from the year were Children of the Longhouse by Joseph Bruchac (a cozy story of a Native American village and a boys journey to manhood) and Children of the Covered Wagon (an absolutely fascinating story of pioneers on the Oregon Trail.).

We loved the historical fiction “Calpurnia Tate girl vet” series. Also the good and the beautiful “glass lake” series with the animal field guides.

I'm glad I'm not alone! I absolutely hated this book too, but my kids loved it! We ended up just grabbing the audiobook and they listened in the car and I popped in my ear buds. Felt the same about Pippi too. We loved The Green Ember, Peter & the Starcatchers (for older elementary/middle) and almost done with first Mistmantle Chronicle.

I was watching on my television and had to get on my computer to say that I was so relieved to hear someone else echo my feelings about Five Little Peppers! For the exact same reasons, too. I liked the kids and the plot, but reading it (even listening after switching to the audiobook) was painful.

Ha!! I’m glad (sort of?) that I’m not the only one! I dreaded reading it. It was painful. Thanks for commiserating with me haha.

Calico Captive by Elizabeth George Speare was a favorite this year. We have loved all the books by that author that we have read so far. (Bronze Bow, The Witch of Blackbird Pond, and The Sign of the Beaver.)

We are reading Sign of the Beaver right now at bedtime and my son and I are loving it. I’m happy to hear her others are enjoyable too - I’ll add those to our summer booklist!

It’s been years since we have read Five Little Peppers, but we have fond memories of it. I’ll have to see what I think of it when I read to my youngest soon… Regarding Pippi, I think the key is to read it to kids who are old enough to know Pippy’s behavior is outrageous. I look at it as just a funny, silly story- like something you would tell around a campfire…. Love Winnie the Pooh! One our very favorites…. A book I always recommend for younger elementary age is Understood Betsy.

I’ve heard good things about Understood Betsy! We really enjoyed Pippi, and I think my children were old enough to understand she was outrageous and hilarious, but I guess I was just over analyzing it. The campfire story puts it into perspective so thanks for sharing 😊

I felt the same way about Pippi Longstocking! We have not read any of the other Pippi books because the first one didn't sit right with me.

We have the classic Winnie the Pooh and we didn’t love it. The audiobook version (unabridged) is absolutely beautiful. The book itself reads very much like a script, similar to the way you would read Shakespeare. For that reason, it’s very confusing because there are so many different voices going on. When you listen to the audiobook version and can hear each and every character in their own voice, it allows you to actually enjoy the story, which is wonderful.

Oooh I will have to check that version out! We love audiobooks.

I personally did not enjoy the Winnie the Pooh book. We loved Adventures with Waffles and Tuesdays at the Castle this school year.

I've never heard of either of those! We didn't care for Winnie the Pooh the first time around either!
