Thank you Rob! I’ve had my Gen3 ring for about 4 nights thus far and I’m getting double the REM, same amount of deep and about half the HRV as compared to my Gen2 ring. I feel that if Oura can’t master consistent reliable HR accuracy, then all other dependent biomarkers will be suspect. Keep up the great work and I look forward to your next Oura 3 review after these “improvements”.

I have had so many problems with the gen 3 ring. I have been using the gen 2 for over a year now and while it had some drawbacks at least it was consistent. The gen 3 is a mess. Many of my values like RHR, HRV and readiness scores are quite a bit different than I experienced with the gen 2. I have written support twice and it’s been over 10 days and I have heard nothing. I have posted on Twitter and again no comment from Oura. What is going on with this company?! What a truly disastrous roll out.

Thanks for the another great video. Love to see people from academia becoming content creators as well. Question: even with an EEG device, does the accuracy of sleep staging detection hold homogeneously across different individuals? In other words: is it harder to distinguish between sleep stages across individuals with different sleep "profiles", e.g. light sleepers vs. heavy sleepers?
@TheQuantifiedScientist3 жыл бұрын
Hi Leonardo! Well, I do think that individuals with more "normal" sleep patterns are probably easier to analyze (score), for both trained professionals and algorithms. I am not sure if it necessarily different for light sleepers vs. heavy sleepers honestly. Of course signal quality is always important. The Dreem 2 is not the best "standard" to use, but I believe it is good enough for my purposes. Ideally we would have a large group of individuals all studied with polysomnography.

Hi Rob, I wanted to take the liberty to calculate the more realistic accuracies of the Oura 3 for sleep tracking. Based off the 0.835 (83.5%) median accuracies (±6.3%) to the dream2 headband. The "true" accuracy of the Oura 3 is more appropriately given as the following: DEEP 0.737 (73.7%) ±0.056 LIGHT 0.421 (42.1%) ±0.032 REM 0.286 (28.6%) ±0.022 AWAKE 0.498 (49.8%) ±0.038 I would say based on the above "true" accuracies for sleep monitoring it is failing in three of the four catagories. Currently the Oura Ring 3, although a very cool idea for health monitoring, is quite unsatisfactory as of right now to track sleep accurately. As with technology it will improve with time so buying one now won't necessarily hurt things in the long run if you can afford it and it's a product that continues to grow and improve with R&D. It could be an excellent and practical way to detect and optimize health in the future!

Hello, Rob. As your initial results seem to suggest, the 3rd gen performs worse than the 2nd generation in terms of both HR and HRV (which are actually the bread and butter of the Oura ring). First and foremost, can you definitely draw that conclusion or do you require more testing? Neverthless, how is this even possible, after 4(ish) years in the making? Can the "state-of-the-art sleep staging algorithm" bring better accuracy for the 3rd gen. HR & HRV? I know that looking at trends is important, but I value accuracy as much.

Your HRV graph doesn't show Garmin devices. would you consider testing a Fenix watch or something like that? They do HR, HRV, sleep tracking, and they're obviously much better at tracking stats during exercise. Garmin pays third parties for software analysis of the health stats, and their hardware fits in a watch so is likely more accurate than a tiny ring. Therefore, would be great to see a test!

I'm especially interested in HRV, both while sleeping and throughout my day. I'm a very fit 57 year old by every measure except HRV (and deep sleep). My blood pressure is good, lowest overnight HR is 46bpm most nights, my V02 Max is in the 50's (Garmin says 58), but for some reason my HRV is always in the teens, today it read 13 ms and my overage over the past few years according to OURA is 20, and I've never seen a reading above 24 ms. Question. When you use your Polar H10, which app do you use to measure HRV overnight for comparison? I'd like to do the same test you did and get a second opinion. HRV seems to be as important as sleep when it comes to all of these wearable devices, there's important overlap when it comes to sleep quality and HRV and the health risks associated with poor sleep and HRV.
