Intro: The Whoop strap as a device mostly focuses on health tracking, and not so much on smartwatch features. This also means it has no screen or any interface at all on the device itself, and it is mostly designed as a health monitoring device. The Whoop Strap keeps track of your health in several ways: it can measure your heart rate, skin temperature, breathing rate, oxygen saturation and heart rate variability. Your heart rate will be measured throughout the day and night, and if you start a sports activity, the frequency of measurements will go up, and the app will show a graph of your heart rate after the workout. What I believe is potentially even more important, is that throughout the night it will measure your resting heart rate, respiratory rate, heart rate variability, skin temperature and blood oxygen levels. Measuring this during the night is one of the optimal times to measure these metrics, and the app will show you if there were any deviations from your normal range, which could indicate there are some health issues. An increased skin temperature could for instance indicate that you are suffering from an infection such as COVID-19 or the flu, and a high resting heart rate could be an indicator of poor recovery. One of the benefits of the Whoop Strap is that you can wear it in many different locations, and I personally prefer to wear it on my biceps, which is also what most of the test results in this video will be based on. However, Whoop offers many more options of where to wear the device itself, and the device should be able to work out where it is located automatically. You can for instance wear the whoop strap 4.0 in your boxers, thong or in a compression top. The major downside of the Whoop Strap for me is the cost. Whoop has completely embraced the subscription model, charging you a certain amount of money each month to use their device and app, but charging you no money up-front for the device itself. The main question I will try to answer in this video is: can we trust the metrics and measurements the Whoop Strap 4.0 provides?

I really wish there were more strap sort of devices out there like the Whoop with no display. I don't really want to "compete" with my health figures daily, just know about them periodically and have a more capable battery than most watches that do this thoroughly.
@MarksTech
@MarksTech Жыл бұрын
why do you wanna know your health figures periodically? isnt the whole point of these devices to better yourself? the only way to do that is for you to compete with yourself. thats the whole point lol. its one of the reasons i bought my garmin watch, and ended up losing 30 lbs because i was competing with my previous records...

This was a good quality review of fitness tracker, you’re awesome taking the time to do it, just on the temperature area every time you want to make a comparison of how good a sensor or detector is you should compare it with something in the same level, is comparing apples with apples, the temperature varies from .5 to 3c on different parts of the body is not the same the skin on the arm than on the armpit, the mouth, forehead or for different holes and cavities in the body 😅. Amazing review ☝🏼

It is a steep asking price, however it seems to have some additional trackers compared to other devices for measuring other aspects of vitality although they are not as accurate as the gold standard devices available in a clinical setting. For example, the sleep tracking was the selling point to me because at the time, around a year ago, the sleep tracking offered more information than Apple Watch tracking. However I’m not sure how they compare today with the new series 9 and ultra 2. Once Apple can track sleeping at least as good as whoop can, I’ll switch.

This has to be the most important video on wearable. We know manufactures will release a product that isn’t as accurate than stated. However a subscription product will be taking your money every month for something that is poor or inadequate performance.

Thanks for this very helpful info! I wish you would test Whoop's claims about HRV and try to untangle the value of their "recovery score." The value prospect with Whoop is very different than other wearables which are usually a one-time purchase instead of a subscription, making it harder to evaluate its worth.

It would be interesting to see if the whoop 4.0 results would improve on some of the harder exercises to monitor such as weightlifting and outdoor cycling using some of the other accessories that Whoop had to offer. More specifically, if doing upper body workout, would the results improve if you placed the whoop monitor on a different part of your body like in the shorts that whoop sells? Essentially placing the device on a part of your body that is not actively being engaged for the workout.

I too was thinking this same thing. I think the device would move around more on my bicep vs my wrist, especially during weight training. I haven’t checked the specs but I wouldn’t think the whoop 4 would have much worse sensors than the Apple Watch but perhaps. I also don’t know if the sensors work better in different places. Like maybe the wrist has relatively thinner skin than the bicep? Maybe less fat? Less water retention? More sweat on bicep vs wrist? Not sure how these affect the sensors accuracy. Id think having different placements of devices would have less of a control of variables. Maybe the Apple Watch on the bicep would rank much lower than it is or even lower than the whoop? Idk. Maybe I’m thinking about it too much. lol. In the market for whoop or ultra human ring so this video popped up of course. The detail here is cool at least.

Since devices are getting better and better overtime and you gigantic work is bringing this up, I start to think these companies are getting to collect huge amounts of good quality data on people. So I start to see the huge price consumer pays for accuracy. For instance, what if medical insurance companies would buy these data and price their insurance based on the results. Are we getting there ? Of course the answer is yes. But the point is.. how fast are we getting there ?

@@aparagarwal1234 nice. I have done a lot of testing and i can tell you my setup with whoop is the bicep band and the aw on the wrist. That way you are only wearing the Apple Watch on your wrist and the whoop out of sight. The whoop on the wrist is highly inconsistent. On the bicep band it becomes probably as accurate as the Apple Watch is on the wrist. Highly recommend the bicep band if you are to stick with whoop. All the best

I once heard Matt Walker mention something about wearing socks and gloves to sleep to warm the extremities. This theoretically draws blood to the surface of the skin, away from the core, which has the heat transfer effect of removing heat from the core. So your experiment results could be explained that as the core lowers in temperature, the heat is transferred to the skin in an attempt to cool off the core, which might be why your skin temp was rising. Could be interesting to see if the reverse were true: does cooling the skin heat up the core? Kind of like a thermostat regulator?

Was about to post something similar from what I had heard by Andrew Huberman. The core temperature is lowest around 2 hours before waking, which would technically mean it's the time when your peripheral temperature would be at it's highest since your core releases heat to the periphery in order to cool itself

Can you discuss specifically what does accuracy mean, in further detail? e.g. ~60% correlation for REM sleep doesn't seems that high. Separately, have you ever tested the Emfit or other 'wearables'?

The amount of testing for this device is super high and it performed well...I think if you test the other "better" devices that many times their correlation # will probably drop a bit. Anyway Great video as always keep up the great content 👍 👌 Also hope you get the new galaxy watch early so we can see how it compared to the competition

Great video! I'd love to see a long term review of the Fenix 7 now that it has HRV tracking (in 9.22 beta firmware). I also feel like Garmin accuracy often goes up a lot 6-9 months into a watch's lifestyle due to firmware updates etc.

You’re missing the Scosche in your heart rate trackers. I have done several tests where I wore it along with a chest strap while riding an indoor bike, and it agreed to within two heartbeats the entire time.
