Malabar Farm

Today's farmers are good stewards of the land. That's due in part to the work of Ohio farmer and author Louis Bromfield. Our Heritage segment leads us to Malabar Farm near Mansfield to learn more about Bromfields conservation and the famous Malabar Farm. From Our Ohio show 104, produced in 2006.

I read the book titled "Malabar Farm" back in the 70s and it changed my life as far as understanding that humans didn't necessarily have to be destructive in their activities, there were things that an individual could do to improve the world in his own backyard, as Bromfield demonstrated. And I think it's ironic that he began to do what he did in 1939, when the economy was the depression, agriculture was the dust bowl, and politics was the coming world war. His book describes how he took a worn-out farm and made it profitable by making it fertile. He controlled erosion, and built topsoil.
