I agree. I am glad my 111 year old house has the original cabinets; I wish it had an older stove. I might have to look for a vintage one. I will have to strip acrylic paint off my cabinets, and see what is under it.

Boy, you guys hit the nail on the head! I quit watching programs for the very reason that they smash the old cabinets and woodwork to smithereens! If you really need to replace them, at least donate them somewhere where they could be reused. I've been a fan of "Jadeite" green for many years. Green (of any kind) is my most favorite color. I keep wondering how long before shiplap wood, sliding barn doors and white cabinets are going to "definitely be OUT DATED (I've come to hate that word). I don't want my home to look like everyone else's! 23 years ago when we had our house built, my granddaughter invited her friend over to our home. The girl sat in the kitchen looking around. She then asked "This is a new house right?" I replied "Yes". She then said "Well, how come it looks old?" I then knew I succeeded in my home decorating! I love the look of old kitchens!! They never lose their charm!

I totally agree with you about saving as much as possible. The craftmanship (and character) is not the same today as it was when the older homes were built. There is such great beauty in the older homes.

Your explanation for who does the electrical, plumbing, roof, is understandable….who wouldn’t contract that out? The laws state it must be done by licensed contractors anyway…you are doing a terrific job doing what you do….that’s why I watch you…you are soooo authentic….keep up the great work?

I know of at least a couple houses in my neighborhood that blew up because someone thought they could do the electrical or gas line work themselves. There is such a thing as penny wise and pound foolish.

On HGTV, the "stars" have photo ops with tools in their hands, but much of the work is done by their crews. Some may do a bit of investigation demo, samples of renovation work or small projects, but the bulk of the renovation/restoration is accomplished by crews of workmen not on camera. In this series and a few others, we're seeing each step being done by the owners, with hired labor and professionals only when the task requires. It takes time.

I love this kitchen. And the use of the tablecloth for curtains was perfect. That cluster rose pattern fits perfectly. I saw that some of the dishes had a similar pattern. One thing that would go great is one of the slim baking cabinets, similar to a Hoosier, with ribbed glass upper doors. It might fit next to the refrigerator. You could convert it into a coffee bar.

I have rescued SO MANY doors, windows, cabinets, and furniture from the dump so I could restore or upcycle. I love using the old materials, and finding ways to show off how beautiful they are! Good for you in recognizing how great those cabinets were..beautiful work!

I laughed at your comment about not doing height or under the floorboards! My husband and I have restored/remodeled our 1896 Victorian ourselves (we did hire a licensed plumber to do the downstairs bathroom, only because the city required it to tie in to the sewer system) and I told him the exact same thing! My feet stay on solid ground and where I can plainly see what is around me! We did replace the kitchen cabinets, but used what was there in the laundry room and mud room! Love watching this channel and seeing it happen in “real” time! Ours took nearly 20 years before I would call it done.

You're very rare-by that I mean I watch this one channel Second Empire Strikes Back and he is redoing a Second Empire house in St Louis Missouri. He said people buy these homes here that are built in the eighteen hundreds and gut them and make them modern and he said I just don't get that. Me? Give me antique any day. I get myself in trouble though because my house was built in 1925 too and I have pulled light switches in my two bedrooms. I want antique light fixtures - the type that have glass bowls that hang down from chains from the light fixture. So I bought one and put it in. It's perfect but I can't turn on the light because I have no light switches. LOL I can turn the bulb but no longer a string to pull. Why don't I put in a light switch? I'm getting there just not in any hurry cuz I don't want to light up like a Christmas tree. Keep up the good work, and yes there are plenty of other people out here that think just like you do. I call it good taste!

I just absolutely loved this. We've lived for years in a 1922-23 Sears Honor-Bilt Del Rey house where the layout is still original. That green color is what we have in our bathroom, matched to a remnant we found in one of the first paint layers! We have the most beautiful hinges that had been covered with layers of paint, and I learned that trick of taking the paint off like you did which worked so much better than trying to soak them in paint stripper. I love the end result and look forward to seeing the final restoration! Love your attitudes and philosophy.

“the landfill is full” EXACTLY! I worked for a summer turning student apartments, in a single day I’d throw out 4 couches because the had a small tear in the pleather. I’d replace entire cabinets because the TRIM was worn, THE TRIM!!!. Thanks for doing your part to keep our planet from becoming one giant dump!

Just found your channel but this video has converted me to you fully. Everything I own is thrifted or second hand and some of it worth thousands now! Or nothing but it still looks stylish and well out together. And better quality than the new homewares made now. And YES to people not trashing timber cabinetry! This drives me BANANAS. I see this all the time in Australia where people tear out solid, hardwood timber cabinetry from 1980s and 1990s homes and replace it with terrible quality Kraft wood cabinetry!! All they needed to do was change the doors but even then, throwing away solid jarrah timber doors for laminate?? Absolutely crazy. Even those can be faced to look modern and not get rid of the timber doors themselves. Love your resourcefulness and ethics. Can’t wait to see how this restoration goes now! Am binging them all.

We bought a 1933 Victorian and the sad thing was that two owners ago totally gutted everything original except the fireplace and walls on either side. Oh, and the original heart pine floors were found under layers of yuck flooring and cans be saved! So, since we can’t afford to replace all that the interior will be more modern. But, we are using materials from a place called Second Chance, more people might recognize the Habitat for Humanity stores, but what an incredible selection at Second Chance. Anything we remove which can be used by others is donated back to Second Chance.

Hubby and I live in a condo in California. I was remodeling it and doing a great job... until I was diagnosed with a rare nerve condition a few years ago. I had brain surgery in Feb 2021 and now starting to feel better. You guys are inspiring me to finish the small dining room and kitchen with your wonderful ideas and suggestions. Thank you. I absolutely love your attitude towards the home and honoring those that lived there. Where my son works, across from their shop is a cabinet maker and once a week they fill the huge trash can outside with cabinet doors that they have replaced. Such a waste of so much wood and hardware. My father was a master carpenter and he had the same attitude as you. He was always using recycled wood for his projects. Your channel reminds me of him. 🥰

I love the colours that you chose for the kitchen. I used exactly the same reference photos for my kitchen and went with levis blue, red and black and white subway tile. We did the floor on our hands and knees in a harlequin pattern in black and white. It took ages. The green that you chose is sensational and it's so cheerful and historically accurate. We have almost twin kitchens! I love the feel when you walk in. You can imagine all of the people who lived there before and how much they would have approved. I wish that youtube had an applause button! Your kitchen is oustanding.

Great advise on not demolishing kitchens and seeing past the dirt and grime. Personally I think it would be difficult to clean and then use cabinets that were previously infested with mice or cockroaches, for example. The kitchen turned out beautiful, that was a lot of hard work. That stove looks amazing, does it still work?

100% agree. Just bought a 1947 colonial and we have spent evenings after work cleaning, sanding and priming the icky cabinets. Insides are finished in a paint I found in my mother's stash (purchased in 1998 and never opened) but outside is going to be a wild fun ombre so that my husband and I don't have to argue on who's favorite color goes in kitchen ☺️ we are even repurposing the bar into a custom counter so we can keep the bulk of the kitchen footprint untouched. Original doorknobs on all but 1 door are being cleaned and staying. Love it

I love your candor, Laine! Love your practicality, your style, your frugality. That said, I also dislike the color. I agree with your thought, though I would have toned it down and gone a tiny bit darker (like the jade teapot and curtain color). I’m sure you did it soooo well, and standing in the space it feels really good and looks so pretty. I’m also saving what I can though my 1906 is getting a retro redo back to unfitted. Most people would say, “ That’s not for me!” I won’t let it hurt my feelings, and please don’t let others hurt yours. Your style is your own! If your husband loves it and supports your vision, you have all the approval you need.❤ For your splinter, I order mercurochrome online (because it’s too cheap they won’t make it in the US any longer) and use a tiny spot of it when I feel the heat of an infection beginning. It’s the only thing which works for me; I have a susceptibility to Mersa with infected soil (even on old wood). It works so quickly (minutes, an hour). Once or twice I’ve had to reapply. Try it :))

I love the kitchen! So glad u restored everything. Our little house is 1954 and although taken care of it was never updated, which is why I wanted it. The kitchen cabinets are adorable and it still has original ceiling light and exhaust fan for the stove. I cleaned the wood and polish it and it look great so I left them as is. Even the counter tops and flooring I think was original. The counter tops were white with a teal blue and butter yellow little star burst pattern and the floor was little bitty check pattern of teal blue and butter yellow. I did change the hardware to a 1940s,1950s style. The hardware had been changed to a 1980s look at some point. I did the kitchen in 50s colors, teal blue, butter yellow and a little splash of red. I got retro fabric and made my curtains. The bathroom was 1954 original to. All in great shape so kept it and freshen it up. 😉

That last little bit about not trashing what is already there, yes, yes, 100% yes!!! A friend was gutting a mid century beauty and hated the wood cabinets in the kitchen so I took them and repurposed them as a sewing table. After she saw them she said, “I should have kept those! They look like new!” And we also have a 1953 Westinghouse refrigerator that we saved from the actual landfill. It is ugly as sin right now, but once she gets her new paint she will be beautiful. (And she works better than my new Frigidaire BTW)

I think I told you on another post, my son and daughter-in-law have a piece of history themselves it’s an old farmhouse the barn is still there the milkhouse is still there. There’s three cemetery plots from previous owners from the late 1800 but this house was a part of the underground railroad and it’s just amazing ! Foundation, support are the trees still have the bark on them and The knots !! They are teaching their family how to live off the land. They have honey bees 🐝, fruit trees chickens raised garden beds so I’m very proud of them!

I love it! It turned out beautifully! My house is a 1937 home, and we're currently remodeling our kitchen back to a 1930s kitchen. I love your color choices, and I can back up that subway tile is inexpensive, having just had our backsplash and countertops done, and we used subway tiles on our backsplash. When we pulled up the flooring (there were 3 layers of it), we found the original flooring with the same colors I had chosen for the kitchen: red, white, black & yellow. It made me feel confident that what we were doing was truly right for the house. It's so nice to see people who respect the history of a home. I see so many homes where all of the original charm has been completely removed in the name of "updating", and it's just so sad.

@@keyboardgoddess13 Hi there! With my house, it was a one owner home from 1937 until 1999, and I bought it in 2001. Not much had been done to it other than paint & linoleum. I have mostly gone with what's under the paint & the linoleum, as well as googling 1930s homes, kitchens, bathrooms, etc. to find out historical colors, furniture, etc. I haven't been super hard nosed about it being exactly accurate, I just want the flavor to shine through, so to speak.

I love it!!! I’m 72, but please take me back to the 50’s, and even earlier. Before I was born, but my Mom and Dad got married in the 30’s and they had jadeite dishes and fiesta ware and so I grew up w/ them, too. I love jadeite….when a bathroom got out in our house, the toilet, tub and sink were lt. blue.long May that period live on and on.

Love the color of the cabinets! The last place I lived, I cleaned up and redid the 1940s kitchen, the biggest job was getting 30 layers of paint off the cupboards, and I painted them almost the same color as yours, although I had about twice as much cupboards to do, and it took the whole summer, I did it all myself, and was very pleased with the results. You two are an amazing couple doing amazing work on preserving history in addition to having full time jobs. Plus you tour historical homes and bring us along. I have learned so much from you both and so enjoy each and every show. You got to wonder what kind of person could say anything negative about how you execute any of the work at any of the homes you restore. I don’t blame you for not touching wiring or plumbing, but I don’t think I would do the roof either. Keep up the amazing work and disregard the negative. Many blessings to you both!!

Guys I have no idea how I'm on house "#3" and never ran across you , I literally sat down to "watch paint dry" on my 1930's add on in the sleeping porch kitchen! I too just refused to let the old wood cabinets go. So enjoying seeing your endeavors I too have treasures lol. Let's keep saving these old Southern beauties one workday at a time!

Just discovered your channel! LOVE. IT.!!! My son would love a beautiful Victorian house, but we live in San Diego, CA, and everything in California, in general, is so expensive! I told him that if he moves out of California, when he gets college age, prices will be better. Anyway, he is very interested in learning more about Victorians, and maintaining them. I told him he could go to college for this, and he was very excited! Thanks for your wonderful videos! My stepsister is the Executive Director of the Los Angeles Conservancy. I told him we have to go for a visit soon and talk to her about all of this, as she will be a great motivator for his pursuits in this area! :-)

I love this kitchen! My home is about 100 years old. I plan to preserve the character and charm of what I have. If I wanted everything to look new and modern, I would buy another house. Keep up the good work!

I’m where you were re the kitchen cabinets in my 1918 house. Cleaning and painting with color! And yes the hinges were painted 18 coats of paint, but it’s fixable. The cabinets go all the way to the ceiling so she’s trending in style( not that I care). Love what y’all did in the kitchen ❤

True story. I once worked with a friend catering a dance workshop. I was there for 2 days working in the kitchen. On the second night, my friend and I were invited to participate in the dance. We showered, dressed up, put on makeup and fixed our hair. A lady that had volunteered in the kitchen with us for a few hours came up to me to introduce herself. She totally did not recognize me. I guess we clean up well! lol Great job in the kitchen. I'm not usually a fan of that color of green, but it just looks right in that kitchen, especially with the curtain that you made. Thanks for bringing us along for the ride.

I love what you did. Even better that you didn't rip things out, but restored what was there. We did something similar with our 1936 Spanish style Craftsman. I love the cupboards and craftsmanship of our kitchen. We have jadeite ceramic tiles on our countertops. I've spent a lot of time finding the Arts & Crafts colour pallets. It is so worth it. Thank you again for a great remodel.

I am new to this channel and I'm already in love! I love your motto and as I'm getting older I have moved away from buying new and trying to make everything look trendy to using vintage peices and buying used items and remaking it to something I love instead of it ending in the landfill. I am in the process of restoring a 1931 Bungalow that is on my farm to use as a guest house. It was actually built for my widowed grandmother and her two children. The kitchen cabinets are from around 1948 and you have definitely influenced me now on what to do and how to do the cabinets. May use the same Shanghai Jade colour that you used. Thanks for all you do and I'm one of your many fans in Alabama.
