I live in Little Rock and these houses are at 16th and Spring across from Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. Madalyn Dortch (Mimi), the mother of a good friend, lived in the 2nd one in the 1990's. She has since passed on and it would break her heart to see the condition of her former residence.

My great grandfather was born in Virginia, and he was a descendant of the Walker family of Castle Hill Plantation. He had Great Great Grandparents who were on two different sides of the war! They were a very wealthy family in possession of 2,000 acres of prime Wayne County land, and the man of the house was a Confederate supporter. His wife, on the other hand, was of Northern extraction, and she sent all their sons to fight in the Union Army. All but 2 died at Gettysburg. It was a hard time for the family, I’m sure!

I'm from Illinois and I looked at this house online many times when it was for sale, but there was something about it that just seemed really odd and off. And I think that's why it was for sale for salog. The architecture is very beautiful, but always came off to me. As very cold and uninvidtng, and I always wondered what the history behind the house was I agree with one of the other commenters on here that the home should have had a grand staircase. I wondered why in the real estate listings, there was no staircase shown, but in this video, you see a little bit of it, and it seems like the stair passages are built between the walls going upstairs. But to have such an ornate home.. With all these outstanding architectural details and not to have a beautiful staircase.That's really odd, but apparently that's the way it was built. It seems like it is very chopped up with the additional kitchens and living spaces, but i'm assuming because of the size of it and the upkeep in the expense they had to do that back in the day. Would love to see original pictures? What are videos of how it was decorated ? How people live before there's one home..

This was wonderful. I wish there were more Antebellum homes that have been restored. I live in SC, and when you look at the mansions from up north around this period compared to down south, there is such a difference in both the structure, build, etc. But also, it seems the ones up north are much more ornate? I wish there was more available historical content about the south before the war other than slavery.

What a terrific overview of the highlights! I recognize all of these lovely homes from your individual tours. This is like Disneyland and the Superbowl for us Old House peeps, lol. My restoration here keeps me pretty busy at present (will our roof be done by Christmas Eve?), but I hope one day to visit you and Hope Farm. Happy Holidays, Laine and Kevin, and please rest up before March!!

Question: Do you know if decorative ceiling moldings derive from some necessary structural element or have they always just been decorative? just one of those weird thoughts we all have on occasion. Thanks as always for all the work you do to bring us amazing historical buildings to ponder!

Beautiful beautiful homes!!❤❤❤❤. Best wishes for a successful tour. But being a Yankee I have a question. How did Natchez dodge the war to maintain all that architecture? I know that it was far from Sherman’s March but still I would think there would have to be battles nearby. Even if someone could recommend a written source because I really don’t know. Did these families just repair the damage to their homes? Living near Gettysburg, Antietam ,and South Mountain; those battles are what I know best. You can still see bullet holes in Gettysburg homes. Thanks for your time.
@OurRestorationNation3 күн бұрын
It’s a long story but basically Natchez declared themselves neutral during the war. So there was very little activity during the war.

Their loss, you have an astonishing body of knowledge on detail and history and your articulation on these subjects flows beautifully! Love your youtube presentations, and nowadays you're reaching far more people than conventional tv and the constrictions of their producers and directors. It may well be a blessing you're not tethered to outmoded legacy television.☺️
