My wife had breast cancer surgery last year in US. If we move to Portugal and obtain residency there, can she be covered by public insurance in Portugal?
@migueldias8546
@migueldias8546 2 жыл бұрын
But taxes are higher in Portugal. Because you have to finance it. Be very careful, it is not as negative as you think. At the opposite. So yes, taxes are higher in Portugal, and gas it twice as expensive as in the US, for example. But now, pharmaceutical companies are not facing individuals, like in the US, they are facing a population, represented by a government. The direct consequence is that anything healthcare related is way cheaper in Portugal, and by a lot. My dad who spend half his time in Portugal and the USA, pay around $10 per month for his inhaler in both countries, when he goes to the pharmacy... There is catch. In Portugal, the transaction is complete at the pharmacy. In the US, the pharmacy send a $1000 bill, per inhaler, to his insurance company... Next time you vote for an US politician that promise you tax cut, make sure you understand how you are being scammed...

I used to work as a financial representative at a major hospital here in the US years ago. I used to see people being rejected for life saving procedures like transplants due to lack of adequate or no health insurance at all. I also witnessed people literally blow through their entire life savings and file bankruptcy when a family member needed expensive, ongoing medical treatment. It was heartbreaking. It blows my mind that cancer care is free there.

Just to add something: if someone is living in Portugal on a non-permanent basis, there is social security insurance (about 120€/month) that gives access to the services as if you were a Portuguese citizen, including receiving sick subvension (baixa).

Portugal was the first foreign country I visited outside of the USA when I was 22 years old back in 2008. On the flight over I contracted a bad case of bronchitis. Visiting a doctor (and subsequently a pharmacy) in Portugal for the first time was an experience that completely shifted my worldview. To be seen right away without waiting for 30 min - 1 hr in the waiting room of an American "urgent care" and then another 30 minutes sitting alone in am exam room before anyone comes and to actually meet with the doctor instead of just a nurse practitioner or assistant, to actually spend time explaining my symptoms as they listen and to carefully undergo examination instead of just being prescribed antibiotics in under 2 minutes flat and being dismissed, to leave and find out what I owed for the visit (I think 8 euro's maybe??) and then going to the pharmacy and getting 3-4 different medicines for literally a few euros I was completely blown away. I kept thinking the prices were wrong. This is one of the major reasons I believe in the power of travel and the importance of leaving the USA. People need to understand with their own eyes how it could be, how this tiny poor country figures out how to do it better than the richest country on earth. I've been back every year since and used both private and public healthcare and I'm never not impressed. I want to add another note for your list: If you do use private healthcare, there are a number of insurances available both in Portugal and even out of the UK. The cost is extremely low (like a thousand euros per year) and will cover almost everything in a private clinic without co-pays and deductibles (the kinds of scams we live with here in the states.) For context: I'm self-employed finally have health insurance now at 35 along with my wife (who is Portuguese) as of last year and it is costing me $955 per month plus my deductibles, plus co-pays, plus still paying out of pocket for medications, etc. Just the sacrifice you have to live with here if you don't want to end up bankrupt.

@@destroya3303, I understand what you mean, probably (and I'm going to guess here) because of what you see happening in the US. Governments should represent the people, and with that I mean the most people as possible. Because the US has made corruption legal, big money interest talks louder and suppresses/manipulates the will of the majority of the people. In Portugal its not that bad (there is always some advantages that elites have of course), socialism is not that of a dirty word as in US. We are not afraid of conceding a part of what each has to the benefit of society that will also will favour back.
@davidribeiro1064
@davidribeiro1064 2 жыл бұрын
@@destroya3303 Here in Portugal, unlilike in the US or North Korea, we don't indoctrinate our children to stand up every morning and pledge allegiance to a piece of cloth. Portugal, unlike the US, didn't drop bombs in Lybia. As for vaccines, well, I'm old enough that the SNS is younger than me. I'm old enough that I never met two of my uncles because they died of childhood diseases. I'm also old enough that when I was born our life expectancy was about 3 years lower than that of the US, while now our life expectancy is two years higher than in the US. If you are unwilling to protect yourself and others than you deserve to be out of a job.

Don't forget that 50 are an outright "no" regardless of whatever the legislation could be, simply because of who wrote it, and who will have the final signoff on it. You didn't see this for other widely popular Covid relief bills under the previous administration & Senate. I see a lot of people excited about the European health card, but in addition to being only possible for those who live and work in Europe, it does not entitle you to free "a la carte" health care in another European country. You can't go to Germany or the UK for a health problem and expect it to be free. The card is only valid for stays, if you fall ill during a trip in Europe (tourism or work) you can receive the necessary care there, in the public health system of the country in question, (at local prices), without having to return home. It is a protection, not a (free) credit card to use in health.

I was wondering about this, whether the care is for only emergency/sudden illnesses and not routine care. For instance if I needed a knee replacement, that’s not an emergency, I couldn’t just pick any country in the EU and decide where to have it done?Or can you?
@cmarq817

@@esg9758 no you can’t. For chronic issues you need to follow the system and wait to be called to do the surgery. Emergencies are a different issue .

And did you know that all portuguese citizens are organ and tissue donors unless they formalize their wish to oppose being donors? Since that law was approved Portugal became one of the top countries in many transplant surgeries because the majority of the population do not oppose to be a donor hence they do not file the declaration of opposition to be an organ and/or tissue donor.

Great information, and thanks especially for looking at nursing homes, a longterm concern. US health care is a shambles with profit clearly (and insanely) the driving force. But, some states have set up policies and systems that are more humane than others. We're in Oregon, and grateful to be here at least for now.

Your journey as a family has become such an educational blessing for us all. The mere fact that healthcare in the USA keeps people working at a company until their 65 is outrageous! I believe universal healthcare is a gem, especially the treatment for drug addiction as well. So many people in the US don’t get treatment for a lack of substantial health insurance. Cancer treatment being free there! Wow!!!🙏🏽

What they are not telling you is that to make an appointment takes months and months. We were there on vacation (I am a Portuguese citizen) my son was involved in a serious car accident, in which 2 ppl died. He was in the hospital for one month before they ever did any type of scan.. when I asked them to do an MRI, they said it would take another two weeks. I said a prayer and with the help of friends was able to put my son on a plane back to US. Within 11 hours we had an MRI done, a bruised spine was diagnosed and we were home. It’s a lovely country, but unless you have access to private health care, don’t expect high quality.

The main hurdle in moving to a place like Portugal are the wages. If you get a high ranking job that is well paid you won’t have a problem and everything just seems to fall into place. Money gets you everything you need as it does just about anywhere. The other option, far more secure is having your company relocating you or having your own business in your home country and carry on remotely. When you guys get to experience the life quality without the pandemic and it’s aftershock restricting everything, that’s when you will see Portugal’s true colors, so be prepared for yet some more pleasant surprises. Stay safe you guys.
