I just can say you are 100% right. I'm German and my husband is American. I lived in the US for 25 years. We had a very good life, big house, nice car, good healt insurance, but as you said all that worth nothing because you have to worry about all the crime it's going on around you. Shooting, killing, robbing, stealing, etc. Even you have a security alarm and cameras all around the house you are not safe in your own house. So we decided to move to Portugal. Now we live here since June 2023, and all i can say, it was the right decision. We feel safe over here and our whole attitude changes completely. We became more relaxed, and enjoy life to the fullest. We don't have to worry about all the crime that we had before. Over here people are friendly and helpful, and almost no crime. People over here are mature enough to know what and what not to do. I'm telling you it's a totally different life over here, plus cost and living is inexpensive, and you don't hear people talk about politic all day long. No, we don't regret that we left the US.

My wife is retiring by 2025, so no NHR, no Golden Visa… hopefully D7 will still exist… we will still have our house in the US. as retirement income but will be taxed very heavily in PT without NHR…

Preach Amon! My husband and I have been saving all our lives, both to educate our sons and for retirement. We should have retired 5 years ago but we continue to work out of sheer fear for all of the reasons you named. None of our sons, well into their thirties, owns a home. Wisely, our youngest left the country right after college and has been able to live comfortably and safely on an income that would have been impossible here.

I think your video reveals what most of us have said for years. America’s biggest export is HYPE! For example, How can the “riches country in the world” not afford Universal Healthcare. Healthcare is the number one reason why people have a job and stay at that job regardless of the stress it puts on them. Which we forget that stress is the leading cause of health related issues! Yeah but here is the thing America and the opportunity it offers is 10X better then most of these 3rd world countries people come from. Also no one said that people comming from those countries should stay in america they should work make money and take it back to there country where it goes 10X for instance one year of work in the states if you take home 20-40k take home pay this after 2 years can get you a home in one of these countries but it would take a citizen of that country 10-20 years to do the same . Also not just for different nationalities but Americans can always work 6 months in the states and do 6 months off . But 100% agree isnt it something that they make the healthcare tied to working and if you stop there goes your health insurance which if you have to pay for out of pocket is crazy expensive so you need to keep a job part time even if you want to do that 6 months oversease it would just need to be online .

An American here still living in America, and it's depressing. Watching housing become so out of control here, while the government does nothing. Seeing kids talk about "why bother" going to college when all it's going to guarantee is massive debt they are going to have to pay off. Seeing the healthcare here get worse and worse every day. I pay hundreds a month for private insurance I get through my job and now half my doctors are refusing to accept my insurance because the insurance companies are making all kinds of excuses to not pay. I had Covid in May and had to be hospitalized for 5 days and I'm still paying off the bills and that's with an expensive insurance I pay over $400 a month for. It's ridiculous! The violence here, the insanity where you can't talk to someone without hearing them say some incredibly hateful or ignorant thing (granted I live in Florida, not saying the whole country is like that).

Well, I don’t know what to say. I came here as a little kid with my parents from Russia after the soviet union collapse. I think we achieved our American dream and we are very proud of America! America is not perfect, but is still the magnet for immigrants all over the world. We will never leave.

That's it. The US is better for those who don't have a "generation al" connection to it (i.e., first or second generation vs. one whose ancestry has been in the US since 1600+ or even earlier). Most first generation (new) citizens come from basically nothing. So, making $10 or $15 is like $1M or $1.5M to them. However, a US Generational Citizen has systematic challenges that a "new" first generation citizen doesn't care to acknowledge. Because after all, "if I made it, surely anyone else can." One size, unfortunately, doesn't fit all.

I'm living the American dream. Started with zero at 25, now worth $2.8M at 38 with a basic accounting job. Work hard at a job that pays decent, get married and stay married. Don't do drugs or gamble and you can still live very well in the US. America doesn't have much safety net but it is still very possible to "make it"

I think he did an excellent job exposing the setbacks that a person in pursuit of the American Dream could face. The choice then becomes this : how do you overcome each of those obstacles? The wealthy retired people have figured it out so there are definitely some people who have reached the American Dream for sure! I would estimate 2% to 10% of senior citizens have reached some level of it. I think his whole point is that people can drastically increase their chances of truly reaching that dream if they immigrate elsewhere. I like the juxtaposition of ideas and options. The American Dream is not impossible but it takes a serious FIGHT to get it. On another note: I would also like to point out that differences in crime laws can heavily impact quality of life. If someone lives in a city or municipality that is “soft on crime” or votes to “defund the police” such policies will encourage lawlessness, decrease quality of life, decrease property values, school quality, and make a place unlivable. I can see why anyone in such a place should completely move! Many Californians and New Yorkers in crime ridden areas simply move to a different state but not a different country and that usually alleviates the bulk of their safety issues. Sometimes things can improve if someone moves from the city center where they must pay a premium for every little thing and instead move away into the suburbs or the outskirts to be able to minimize their costs of living. There are many ways to remedy the issues for those who are seeking wisdom. Interesting video!!!

I agree w mostly everything Amon says, however, let’s not forget where he made most of his money - In the U.S., then he left and made more money. Also, most of his money: Roth, 401K, HSA, Brokerage acct. still held in U.S accounts. The U.S. stock overall still out performs European, Asians, + emerging markets. His 1st talking point, about hard work is half and half, but u can’t work hard only, u have to work smart. Ppl are not leveraging their jobs benefit properly when they have them, like he did. 1/3 of Americans have no retirement or savings, many still don’t do 401k match, or HSA. I believe 68% of US GDP, comprise of personal consumption. 51% of Americans making $100K yrly living paycheck to paycheck. Let’s not 4get other factors that influences ppl: social media flexing, conspicuous consumption, eating out, and buying newer cars can’t afford. The American dream is hard, but still possible, I believe it, because w/o a possible mindset, nothing is possible.

Sadly, Portugal is doing away with the NHR so if your income comes from the U.S., you would be paying taxes in both countries which would make it unaffordable for most people.

The only thing keeping me here is my son is in a great school for elementary education. However, I plan on leaving as soon as he finishes 5th grade. I am laying the groundwork for us to be able to afford to leave and hopefully never look back. I had to leave Europe for america just to make a decent wage. I was also taxed over 30 percent on a meager salary and had to pay exhorbitant city taxes. While I agree with you on the peace aspect, I think actually very difficult to make it in europe. Probably better to make money in the US then retire in europe like you did!

Amen, Ammon! My husband and I retired at 61 and 50 with a half million dollars, and continued to enjoy multiple vacations and donate thousands of dollars annually. He died only a few years later, and after that I spent 14 years taking care of several close family members - none of whom saved enough for their retirement. I developed chronic autoimmune conditions requiring tens of thousands of dollars of out of pocket expenses for medical and in-home care each year. My long term care health insurance company went into receivership. Now, at 75, I am the only remaining family member alive, and I'm looking at the end of my savings if I don't make a radical change soon. I believe I am too old to qualify for a loan to purchase a home or qualify for health insurance in Portugal, my first choice for where to relocate.

For me in my late 50s I still have family & friends but I feel I still have a lot to give, I need to continue to make new friends and serve others in my community. My wife and I went to a few local vibrant churches and found some caring people, families and avenues to serve others. It was humbling because we are introverts but need others as well because isolation isn’t healthy… I will pray that you find “your own tribe” and experience a joyful life amongst other caring folks!

While I'm neither Amon nor Christina, I've followed them for some time. I think it took them entering the workforce for them to realize the rat race wasn't all it was cracked up to be, which is why they did FIRE and left the US. So they had a sweet cushion before making the leap and may not be saying these things otherwise. That said they're no longer working 9-5 and have made some smart decisions that they've documented here in YT (and are probably also monetizing here, also smart) that have enabled them to continue thriving abroad. So they've created a life that works for them, on their terms and that's admirable and inspirational, at least to me.

In this day and age you can start an e-commerce store that sells anywhere in the world and work from anywhere in the world. You can create a brand from anywhere in the world that has a contract factory produce your product and a third-party warehouse/fulfillment company ship it. You could live literally anywhere and do this and earn more than most Americans. If you are smart about the process within 1 year of deciding to create your first product you will have a million in annualized sales. It only takes 4 products a day at about $30 price point each selling 25 units a day to hit that number. You can easily build an audience of 10k people in many niches within 4 months that will result in those numbers within 1 year.

In the U.S. you have the false sense of ownership. You never own that home. the homes there aren't even well made anymore.You don't even own the land that the home sits on! In most other countries, you own the land that your home is on. You own the house, mostly no mortgage, outright! The homes are well built and will last forever! There are so many benefits to living abroad. There's always an adjustment period but its worth it!

I would add, after saying I agree 100% with your move to Portugal, that America is still the place to build that dream. It's not as easy as it was 10 or 20 years ago and it's really hard right now, with the last 3 years, but it's still the place to be. It's completely different to move to Portugal after making and saving your money, than it is to make it from scratch as a Portuguese citizen. There's a reason its so much cheaper to live there, than it is in the US. There's a reason you hear "European" size apartment, with a "European" size kitchen, on shows like international house hunters. Multigenerational living, is still the norm across a lot of Europe, because housing has been so unaffordable for the people who live there. Its why there's so much resentment towards Americans in places like Spain, Portugal and Italy now, because the Americans who are moving there have a much higher income than the locals. I would change the description to say, - If you want to complete the American dream using FIRE, earlier and/or at a higher standard, then moving abroad is the way to go. I'd also add, that you made a lot of good and true statements about the conditions in the US today, which has me nervous not only for the US, but for a lot of places that have been propped up by the US. Look at the Ukraine right now. I'm sure there were plenty of Expats living there when Russia invaded. If not for the US military and winning the cold war, at a minimum East Germany, Poland, Hungary, etc.. would all still be behind the Iron Curtain of the Soviet Union and that's if the Soviets stayed on their side of the curtain. Hopefully the Ukraine war has woken Europe up, because none of the countries in NATO or the EU, except for Poland, were even paying the measly 2% of GDP for their own defense. Also, what would the economies of Europe look like, if it wasn't for American Tourist? The number one industry in Europe is tourism. The number one industry in places like Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, etc.. is tourism. No American Tourist and economies would start crashing, followed by government collapses. Greece, Italy and several others would have already collapsed, if places like the US, Germany and the UK hadn't bailed them out. If you don't have to pay for your own defense and you have a steady stream of tourist to fill your VAT tax coffers, its a lot easier to provide things like cheap healthcare. Even on the healthcare front, countries like Norway have made some giant steps forward because of all that oil money, but the US is still where around 70% of all medical innovation occurs. That was near 90% back in the 70s. I mean its one thing to get your healthcare in Portugal, try getting it there but don't use any instruments or test systems from the US, don't use any surgical techniques or drugs from the US and don't use any Drs that are either from the US or were trained in the US. It gets a lot harder. And, yes all those are available now, but what about the future? Any surprise the first vaccines that really worked on Covid, came from the US or US companies? Who's going to develop the next innovations /vaccines for Portugal, if its not the US? There are super bugs now, that are killing people, because our current antibiotics don't work. The western world cannot afford for the US to be the same as a lot of Europe. If the US had the same lifestyle as Portugal, with the equivalent military, healthcare, industry, etc.. where would we be? Bottom line, if the US is slipping, lifestyles in parts of Europe are going to change.

I disagree, imagine how much better america is vs their country is to want to leave. Granted our politicians are horrible, mist of them, and our healthcare could be a lot better especially with insurance. But just think how much better it is here than a lot of other places. For example a mail order bride is willing to leave her family and marry some random person cause their situation is so bad. Yes things could be better, our govt and is screwing us but at least I have the freedom to say that.

It's the othering and greed that has this country and the world in disarray. On the other hand there's only so many people these other countries will allow in because gentrification is sure enough taking place in these safe countries and locals are at risk of being priced out of their own country.

I have watched your videos since you have been in Portugal. I have a lawyer in Lisbon working on my citizenship while I work on my portugese . I planned on retiring and moving there in 2025, Then I heard the NHR is probably going away and thought taxes will kill me there and I might not want to move. but your video hit on everything man. I have never left a comment but this is the best video you have ever done, to me. It is all true and I am looking at it as more than money. I am going to Portugal again on the 7th of November for 2 weeks and I am feeling really positive and can't wait to do some scouting. Hi, Thanks for the video.. Have a request, Can you please make a video on nitty-gritty of moving abroad. That is say a mail forwarding or a way to collect mails and then periodically send the mail to international destination. Tax issues .. if Mail forwarding if not in the same state (I am in CA). As a US citizen is there any dos and Dont's on investment when abroad (some one said I will not be able to invest in US Mutual Funds). Lock credit report, but what happens if we move abroad and lose that mail Address and Phone number too ? Having cheap international roaming US number (may be Mint ?) Some trading Ac do not allow for International address, what to do then ? Thanks

I will give you simple example, suppose you need to fix water faucet at your home, the plumber might need for one month to arrive?
