That tree is in the Botanical gardens near Kolkata. The banyan tree puts down prop roots which can mature into wooden trunks. This enables it to spread wide. The tree can live on even if the original stem dies away if sufficient prop roots are there.

The last one is Great Banyan Tree in the Botanical Gardens located in Howrah, Kolkata. The tree puts down aerial prop roots which hang from the branches and gradually mature into trunks which appear like a separate tree. But in whole it's one whole tree which keeps spreading and gets wider. In this way, even if the original stem dies or decays some day, the rest of the tree can still live on. That is how it got widened over 5 acres and has over 3700 aerial roots at present. Many branches and roots were destroyed by cyclones over the years, the most recent one being Amphan. But it still lives on and do give it a visit when you come to Kolkata next.
@srinjoykumarmitra1698

Rick, Banyan trees grow shoots that find rooting in the adjacent soil, spring up again, and thus it keeps expanding. As long as it is grown from one central stem / bark, it is called as one intact tree. That is one main reason why Banyan tree finds a place in Indian philosophy, and also a mention in The Gita ('Ashwattha' meaning 'temporal') as a symbol for universe being made up of many continuous 'worlds'.

Banyan tree is very common in India. This tree develops roots on its branches and when those roots touch the ground they go into the soil and thus the tree develops so many support base except the main trunk. After many years even if you cut the main trunk of tree, it will still survive. Also lord Budha was enlightened under the Banyan tree.

Whattt NOO! What you're looking at is a single tree but it has multiple adventitious roots with one stem. Those adventitious roots functions as a supporting element when they reach into the ground and become a pseudo stem.

Bhangarh is not haunted. It is an ASI managed heritage site, and all ASI sites close in the evening and open in the morning. No other reason to restrict entry. There is wild life in the area and leopards are known to wander into the site at night. Look up Banyan trees. They have roots growing out their branches too and these reach the ground and add to the girth of the tree. This may make it look like separate trees but once you are underneath the tree you can tell that it is all just one tree.

So banyan tree has its own main roots but also as these are very wide to support it's great nutrient requirement it grows prop roots which become thicker and look like individual tree but that is ansingle tree only guys yes it's widest ............ As u guys said at the end these roots grow from branches to the ground yes that's why it looks colection of trees but it only has one main bark or stem...
