There were so many teachers in my school who enjoyed manhandling students physically and doling out corporal punishment. A maths teacher once twisted my ear so hard, I had tinnitus for 3 days. Years after I switched school I learnt that there was a manhunt going on for the same teacher after he slapped a 6th grader so hard that she actually died. Apparently he was pissed that she was skipping school, despite knowing that she had to because of her poor health. The school initially tried to cover it up by calling it an accident, that she was hit by a cricket ball that flew in through the window. Only after parents and students rioted did they expel the teacher.

Relation between teacher student is gradually changing in India also, earlier when I was a kid, that time teachers used to bit us with stick but equally loved us a lot ...they are like parents to us , who take care of us seriously like their own children , even pupil who got no money, teachers used to pay their fees also , teachers are like Gurus that time in India ,even students could stay at teachers house like their family members for long time...but now it's a kind of business, just like another service sector ...you pay they give lessons .

The way of Indian parenting and teachership is way different and related to the Indian culture. Elders are considered as respected and equal to god. And a teacher is more than a god to the students. We believe parents and teachers punish us or beat us to rectify our behaviour. So even their beatings are considered as blessings. I remember back in our school days a cane stick is the most important thing of the teacher's table assesories than chalk and dusters. And we used to get beaten 5/10 sticks normally in our every small mistakes like goship in classroom, indiscipline or not doing our homeworks.

In India as per Child Rights no teacher is allowed to touch, humiliate, punish, etc the students. This is now being followed very strictly in last 10 years. Government of India has been very conscious and strict about Child Rights.

Well now that I realise that teachers can't hit you I remember some teachers putting a pencil in between your fingers and rolling them. Man they were awful people. As I grew up now you can't really hit students. I had a Bengali language teacher who used to hit every one with her handkerchief xD it never hurt and as I grew older I came to like her more. She is no longer with us. But I will never forget her handkerchief beatings.

I grew up in a Catholic school in Kerala and boy I must say they used to beat the living daylights off the students with canes and dusters. The principal even had a cane that was ribbed for extra "pleasure". The way they used to hit the kids is unthinkable in today's world. I was once hit by a duster continously on my arm so badly my arm was black and sore for days. This is because I couldn't spell "conspicuous" in my 7th grade. You tell your parents about it and they support the teachers. The worst weapon was car keys. They'll use the end of their car/bike keys to pinch on your upper arm that by the time they are done, a portion of your skin will go missing. Thinking of what they did to schools kids back then, it was downright sadistic and barbaric.
