Vijay had some phenomenal movies in the late 90s like thullada manum thullum and kadhalukku mariyadhi both movies are now considered tamil classics both also have beautiful songs in them. My all time favourite vijay will always be Ghilli and that will be my best recommendation for vijay, as long as you see it as a commercial movie, you will have lots of fun watching it.

Gilli is not Vijay movie , it's Mahesh Babu movie . Vijay did not have any good movies of his own all are copied from Telugu . He is notable star now because of his Influential Father .

If you really want to watch thalapathy vijay's movie go ahead with Kaththi movie. As everyone knows every thalapathy vijay movie has a social message. Even many indian political parties are againts him because vijay reveals the truth to public. The makkal iyakkam is the only registered fan association in india which is of vijay and this fans association is meant for serving people, helping poors, blood donation camp and etc. His birthday is celebrated as welfare day amongst several part of India.
