Simple facts: in India, English-language fluency is a socioeconomic indicator. If you speak English well, people assume you must be affluent, likely went to a prestigious private school, or were born and raised abroad (again commonly associated with higher income households). Subpar English language skills automatically imply a bunch of negative assumptions: low income household, probably regressive/conservative values, big dealbreaker with dating (poor English > poor family > probably toxic male with misogynistic ideas etc.) It’s a class marker. It’s annoying to both parties - if you do have native speaker fluency and an accent that isn’t the stereotypical Indian accent, people think you’re a poser, white wannabe, colonial slave etc. And if you go hard and argue that you, an Indian person that speaks 3+ languages doesn’t need to prove anything by mastering English, you’re probably going to be thought of as a nationalist zealot. It’s quite something lol.

Shallow people with no other qualities to speak of often use their (relative) superior English to look down upon “the poors” with condescension and there, I totally get being irritated by those “Angrez ki aulad” types. My take is stereotypes are bad. English language abilities aren’t an indicator of character, values or intelligence. To me, all that matters is being able to articulate oneself in any language - and hopefully have something interesting to say.

Not only Pronunciation but how you speak a language evolves constantly. I have often wondered why and how that is happening, all old movies in any language has a way of speaking completely different from how it is now.

Old movies are like stage play or theatre drama type. So literature kinda dialogues are there. But new movies had the dialogue how people speak in generally.

In India we are taught British English in the schools, however when we get out of the school and install MS Office in our system, we choose the default language as American English. Every time I write colour or behaviour it says the spelling is wrong. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
