This was back in the days where a budget for a film like this was impossible for India. This was pre Bahubali, big budget productions didn't come by that often. Kamal released these visuals for Queens visit to India at that time, which played like an extended teaser. This was his dream project which was never made. I think Kamal would have gone to different heights if this had gotten made.

This was shot in 1997.. Kamal is a visionary.. South Indian cinema's production value increased by Shankar movies. Sivaji, Endhiran are the movies which took revenue to new heights. Then Baahubali came as a revolution in the South Indian film industry after 2015.. Then Rajamouli is taking the legacy to new heights now..

Google says, "Works on Marudhanayagam suddenly ceased in late 1998, after a British company that had planned to co-produce the film, backed out on account of India's Pokhran-II nuclear bomb test explosions. The US put sanctions on India which were lifted soon after. The film has been indefinitely postponed since.".

Few scenes of this movie was shot near the banks of Chalakudy river, near by my Grandparent's home. I still remember my grandma holding me up in her arms to show me the shooting. This movie was bagged and never released due to some reasons. One of the vivid memories of my childhood, seeing the scenes and scenery from back then.

this unrealised movie is based on true story of yusuf khan who according to british east india company was the greatest military genius known for his military statergy along with another military genius hyder ali who is known for his speed .both lived in 1700s . marudhunayagan pillai was his real name but he converted to islam and became yusuf khan he married a christian portuguese women .kamal hassan said he sold everything as this was his dream project he was also helped financially by sridevi and few others but he could only take 32 minutes of this movie . it again became important in 2010s and he changed its name to marmayogi(martial arts of south india which you see in indian movie also ) ,because he was also a martial artist in this movie who became the king of madurai . yusuf khan (whose character kamal hassan plays in this movie ) was betrayed by his close men and his french officers just like william wallace in brave heart movie by mel gibson . kamal hassan said that this story and movie was far better than brave heart which was released at that time. recently he said he cant make this movie as many of his fans including me want it badly he said he might direct this movie with actor vikram taking his role of marudhunayagan . the british feared him the most along with hyder ali and tipu sultan that the british when they hanged him on the tree the branch broke but yusuf khan (marudhunayagan pillai) didnt die because he knew how to control his neck muscles and breath . later they blew him up in a canon and his different body parts were buried in different places in madurai (tamil nadu ) so that people dont make him their hero . rather than taking it as movie kamal hassan should take yusuf khan story as a series as his whole life is an adventure and thrill . he is still considered as a great military genius ever along with napolean bonarpet ,hyder ali and tipu sultan . tipu sultan was also defeated because the british spies intrecepted his letter to napolean bonoparte

This movie trailer, when it was "leaked" had nudity, gore, and some more controversial elements. But I cannot find the original version anywhere. Only the cut version is available. If it had been released now, many would have accepted his raw film. Hope he releases it soon. The history takes place at the end of the 17th century and at the beginning of the 18th century during one of the previous queen's eras. He was one of the first freedom fighters in India. He said in an interview in 2000 that he needed the budget in $ not rupees back then. After the American company backed out no one came forward and he got old. No one wants to take the risk for him. Because most of his movies would be art or hit/miss. He also said It might be re-shot or it might be released after his Death.
