For Indian culture, music, especially classical music, is meditative. So when artists perform on stage, people tend to sit still and listen - that's the respect they give the artists and the art form. Another thing is that we are used to such classical performances. That explains the lack of external reactions :)

In Indian classical music, the practice of using the sargam (s, r, g, m, p, d, n, s) in a particular manner, often with oscillations and melodic embellishments, is known as "alap" (or "alaap"). The "alap" is an introductory part of a raga performance where the singer explores and elaborates on the raga, often using techniques such as meend (sliding between notes) and other ornamentations to develop the raga's mood and character.
