Nowadays a lot of digital sounds are been used which are so accurately pitched so the spectrum of accuracy has became shorter for the singer. Hence their voice needed to be autotuned to match with the digital sounds to cover the human errors. Whereas in old songs, there were live recordings with live instruments that are played and no digital sounds. Hence the tuning of these instruments are not very accurate due to human errors or othwr environmental factors. Hence the spectrum of accuracy is broadened for the singers in that time. Hence no need of autotune was required for them.. I hope u understand what i am saying 😃

As a person who is producing music for more than a decade now as a hobby, i know a fair bit about this. Earlier producers do used to add several effects on vocals to make it crisper/lighter/delayed/reverby etc etc. This makes the music interesting, and has nothing to do with the ability of the singer. Autotune, on the other hand, does not only do pitch correction, but also add few of the above mentioned effects. You can add autotune to trained singer. Its a common knowledge between production people that without tweaking the vocals, YOU CANNOT MAKE A MUSIC. The vocals becomes muted and dull within the instruments. "Autotune" can achieve that to some degree, however you have to, and yes HAVE TO add effects on vocals, no matter its Udit Narayan or Sonu Nigam.
