Were you free steering that tractor I didn't see a globe on it or anything on the steering wheel if so wow that was impressive how straight you kept it even following rows don't think I could keep it that straight in a field anymore since we got auto steer a few years ago

Yes it was 100% free steering! Thank you! I didn’t do a perfect job but I always try my best

Some really great shots there, and some great information too! Thanks Carson! I enjoyed seeing how wide open it is where you are. It's good to feel small in nature, imho. Thanks for your good work!!!!!

You might want to keep in mind one thing there Junior when you’re talking about John Deere the way you are think about how young you are and how long John Deere has been making tractors
@6thGenFarmer2 жыл бұрын
Did I say something wrong? All I remember saying is how the sound guard cabs are still comfortable but they don’t steer as well as newer tractors.

We used rotary hoes to aid in emergence of cotton and soybeans. Due to crusting after heavy rains just after planting on our sandy loam cotton soils and also they were good to mediate blowing sand on very young cotton just after emergence on crusted ground just cracking up the crust slowed the sand on a wendy day preventing the sand from cutting the young cotton plants first two leaves off the stem. Resulting in the plant dying. Plus it took care of any small seeded weeds that had germinated in the top 1 inch of the seed bed.

Hi Carson! Thanks for posting! That was really enjoyable (Although I always enjoy your videos!) seeing the rotary hoe and the old John Deere working! Something we don't get to see very often! You sure were moving at a good pace! Lots of concentration keeping it between the rows! Thanks again, stay safe and healthy!

I’ve done quite a bit with our own rotary hoe since we got it back in 2015, got a 16r40 model running behind originally an 8130, now an 8235r, and I don’t mind it too much. We run it in cotton.

Really good auto steer would be good for cultivating the crop

Auto-steer may be retrofitted to this vintage tractor. Lots of folks experimenting w/ F J Dynamics, capable of sub-inch accuracy.

Jodi DeJong is always battling w/ MN Farmers over black soil & tillage. She never gives up trying 💯👌
@6thGenFarmer2 жыл бұрын
Here is my opinion on it. Eventually we could either get to organic corn or to no-till…. However we will never get to both… without tillage organic corn is absolutely useless.

Do you guys have rod weeders down there? They were really popular up here in the 70's through to the 90's. I only grow cereals and peas at 7 inch spacings so don't know how well this would work for corn with that 30 inch spacing. I'll plant about 1 1/2 -2 inches deep, then about 5-6 days later I'll go over it with the rod weeder just above the kernels, about an inch deep, and get a weed kill before the crop starts popping out of the ground. Planting that deep allows me to get as much of a weed growth as possible before the crop emerges. Works pretty good, it sure gives the crop a head start over the weeds. It will canopy out quite well before any more weeds have a chance to grow. And they are awesome for thistle, they will pull them right out of the ground and they will be laying on top with 6-8 inch roots. I like to use it for my last pass of the year when I am summer fallowing a field for the year, about the end of Sept/start of Oct. You'll hardly see any in the crop next year. Just thought I would mention yet another tillage tool that works well for organic weed control. Thanks for the video!
@thelunatick19932 жыл бұрын
My memory of cultivators had shoes like you would see in field cultivators. Intent not to run close to the row. As long as you could drive straight looking backwards
@billupstateny91512 жыл бұрын
When the corn canopy closes, won't that prevent the weed growth❓Or interseed a cover crop which actually feeds the corn. 🙊🚜🇺🇸🗽❓
@6thGenFarmer2 жыл бұрын
The canopy will stop weed growth on new weeds before they germinate but but will not stop weeds that are already coming up. It does not seem that many people get covercrop to work in corn. The corn is very specific about seed placement and depth, it can probably be done but not many people seem to be able to introduce a cover crop without losing lots of yield
@rau1232 жыл бұрын
I still don't see how using that will disrupt the weeds but not injure the growing corn.. it seems rough on the ground.

Thanks for the clarification! I believe that the 8000 series had a drop down gearbox for the front wheel assist to help with tighter steering radius
