That fast run with inside out picking has been my nemesis block on guitar for years . but I'm getting close to nailing it . I find that practicing this slow is only ok up to a point because when it reaches a certain speed the whole picking mechanics and physics change and a different technique is required compared to how you pick it at a slower speed... I'm almost there and I find that angling your pick and approaching it with a lighter attack with no finger or thumb twitching movement when practicing this run slow helps with the mechanics needed for when it goes to full speed ... its tempting to thumb twitch or move your fingers a minute fraction when picking inside out runs like this at slower speeds but this doesn't work at 180RPM for me. my tip (that is working for me) to anyone else who is having problems is angle your pick and go for a light attack with your palm tilted upwards so it is barely resting on the strings and only enough to palm mute. work on the pattern on the first two strings of the run and make a repetitive exercise out of it, start slow with a light attack and build up speed ,

Hi Gawain! Fantastic tips there! We will definitely be doing more courses on this in future, as it's an incredibly difficult subject and something that we can break down into great detail! Thanks for the extra advise and your personal insights in the meantime 😊😊🙏

Great lesson video, thanks for posting this video!! Good job explaining the string letters and fret numbers, the way that the tabs would be written out

Gary, in the video of the original song you can quite clearly see that Gary continues on to the third string (G string) on the long scale run and then moves up to the seventh fret area. Do you think this makes the run easier or is it just a quirk of Gary's that would actually be more difficult for us mere mortals?

This lick starts actually from the note E so it goes like E C D E etc.

Thanks man, thats a very handy study. Ive been looking at Gary playing it in old videos and to my eye he has a slightly different fingering/approach? to me, when Gary does (you call part 5) he seems to come from lower on the neck and uses the index finger to slide into higher positions (on the E string) as pivot notes, while playing the other notes on the B string until he reaches up to the final part. It looks to me like you are playing the exact same notes in different positions but using the pinky to shift higher on certain parts? Its all what suits your particular ease of playing i guess. I have an old Wolf Marshall book where his tab for that last run starts at the C on the 8th fret E string. very awkward actually and doesnt sound right at all! good work anyway. maybe you could do the solo from Victims of the future? its a little similiar but another great Gary-ism!

@@jackthelad15 Everyone seems to play this differently. I have the "official" transcription, and it's nothing like this, and nothing like any version I've seen of Gary himself playing it. There a video of Gary in the 80s, and a video of Gary in the 90s, and he plays the run differently in each, and neither look like the way he plays it in the video. I think the actual proper way is "start on a low C, play as fast and as intimidating as you can, and just make sure you end on a high C, bending it up the D".

@@nicolasjoan6515 staccato doesn't mean picking every note. You can pick every note and still be legato.

2:12 there you face inside picking.. are you really gonna play it up to speed? and do you use an upward pick angle to not getting stuck in between the strings? this lick is such a nasty one...
@yga4 жыл бұрын
Yeah it's a tricky one for sure, but Simone teaches it exactly as he does it up to speed! He's a beast!! 😀

Ascending fours in D minor starting with the little finger on the tenth fret low E is what he actually played. starting one position back ,three notes per string and continue to the end on the top two strings. This shows you how you play it . Crap really.(The playing is good not the lesson. you should say the scales and concepts.)

Just watched 3 live vids and GM plays last run in 3rd position every time. When i saw him in 89 he played it in 3rd pos.
@mikaelstrom1114 Жыл бұрын
@@mikemantis41 The official video is far from this lesson. I slowed down the official video, and got that down, though hard to play at full speed. Did GM divert from the official live? If so, how?
