I first heard it in an AT&T commercial when I was an adolescent and it was haunting and beautiful and I was just stunned that AT&T would have such an incredibly soulful song for their jingle. I had no idea it was a real song till many years later.
The original film "Bagdad Cafe" produced in 1987, and this song "CALLING YOU" was written to this film also in 1987.

This collage in particular does a good job of capturing the Spirit of one of the most influential stories in my life....as I crossed The Great Divide from NYC to Laguna Beach, I found a cafe with a broken coffee machine. You had to use a screw driver to turn it on. The hot dry wind of the City Desert finally wore me out and I had to return to the heartland...."LA proved too much for the man, so he's going back to find the life he once knew so long ago...." But that's a different song.

Indeed! Both song and movie are totally unforgettable! Remember one of the major telephone service companies like AT&T or MCI used the song in a commercial years ago?

Such a hauntingly beautiful song. Jevetta Steele sings it better than anyone. Your shots of the movie are so reminiscent - I recall watching it years ago. Very nice job.

I cannot stop listening to this beautiful and haunting song. Only by Jennetta Steele, though. Others are simply not the same.

Only great singers can cover this song. The music is so minimalist that you can't fake the high end vocal expression needed to pull this off. Best interpretation I've heard is by Canadian jazz singer Holly Cole.

The Bagdad Cafe shown at the beginning of the video is actually in Newberry Springs, CA and not the original, which was located in Amboy, CA. The cafe no longer exists in Amboy, CA. :( I love the movie and Jevette is the only one who can sing this! :)

Num lugar inóspito, seco, distante, o amor e a amizade nascem de forma forte e consistente. Existe, acreditem, existe.
Read more in EntreMentes Paulo Gurgel
