This animation is so cute. One of my favorites now. When she first hit the fence, I wondered why she didn't just immediately notice the hole and climb through it. Children normally do in things like this. Then she ducked down and carefully felt along it, staring blankly the entire time, and it clicked. It became instantly obvious to me she was a blind child who'd just lost her seeing-eye dog. It was so much fun to see her discover the world as she went along, with her "magic wand". Gogo is such a good dog. As long as she has him, she'll be okay.

@@Nicole-bj4dv It actually sounded like Coco to me, too, on the first pass! But it specifically calls the dog Gogo in the credits, and if I remember right from the other comments, calling a dog Gogo is basically like an American saying "doggy". I could also clearly hear Gogo when I rewatched it and was listening more closely. Part of hearing is actually what our brains expect to hear, and they'll autocorrect, sometimes to really weird things, when what we hear doesn't quite match with the words we know.

My brother programmed a full game where you navigate the map purely through sound. With stereo headphones, You use the joystick to run away from bad noises, such as attacking digs, and listen for a tune. As you get closer it get louder until it dings as you hit the end point of the level. It was a demonstration, 30 lvls, to display different tech for companies searching for new varieties of interactive tech primarily for education, but I'd like to see it available to the public someday. It was immensely enjoyable.

Can artists these days just get some fucking recognition for their work without being relentlessly compared to fucking Studio Ghibli and without people just going “oh it’s like Ponyo” every time there’s a cute main character?! It’s so goddamn insulting to all the hard work and passion they put in to something unique and special.
@gtcWoona5 жыл бұрын
@@dildonius How can an honest reaction like that be insulting? If that's what they feel, I think its fine. There's no reason that being compared to ghibli should be insulting. Its short-sighted, and very surface-level, but that's what you're going to get from 99% of the people who view this kind of content, people who aren't really looking that far into things. Just look at the Oscars. I don't think its insulting when, despite the efforts put in, others don't care enough to notice or highlight the nuance. If anything, its just apparent that people gloss over the details in general unless its a subject that they're particularly passionate about. I can't tell one sports-ball player from another, and I think that's a fair exchange. No direct attack was made. Its not like this work was admonished or called a clone or anything. Regardless, I think OP is completely off. I don't get a ghibli vibe from this at all.

@SayderCascading9 жыл бұрын
***** Because she's obviously afraid to enter, as any child - blind or not - would be. They didn't make it blatantly obvious. To me, she was a scared little girl dipping her toe in the metaphorical ocean. Because the animation was done in such a way that showed everything around her until she went through the hole, it made it seem like she was entering a magical place or playing a game while finding her dog. The short was supposed to drop hints, but I believe they did not want to make it blatantly obvious because a blind girl walking through her own little world is similar to any child walking through the world playing pretend. THAT is why I didn't picture her blind throughout the short. 😒
@42jemini9 жыл бұрын
Kim Arundale I don't know, maybe it is because my sister works with children with disabilities and I have interacted with a lot of her deaf friends, but I caught on instantly when she didn't actually look at the hole and the way she traced the edges with her fingers. If I went in to explaining the reasons why the way she touched the edges of the hole were so distinctive, it would sound belittling again. (really not my intention.) I guess though that anyone who knows she is blind now can tell what I saw the first time when they watch that scene again.
@SayderCascading9 жыл бұрын
***** Exactly. You don't know unless you are experienced in determining such things. Just the other day, a blind man got on the same bus as me with his service dog. I didn't see him while he got on, but I saw him find a seat and sit (which was difficult because no one would get up for him). I didn't realize he was blind til I spoke with him at our final stop in Chicago. I assumed his service dog was for a disability, but I didn't know which one til I spoke to him and he had his eyes closed and didn't look my way. If someone is blind all their life, they usually are pretty good at getting around fairly normally. He seemed to move well, but in the big city of Chicago I understand why he would want a seeing eye dog instead of a walking stick.
@SayderCascading8 жыл бұрын
Mack Ayache Did you not read the comments where I explain in detail the way I viewed this short story? Based on your comment, I'm guessing you didn't. Well, the guy wouldn’t know she was blind just from looking at her. Could have been a normal girl walking her dog and not being aware of surroundings. A very good example of empathetic media, which I love. The kind of stories/music/etc. which attempt to make you feel the emotions/worldview of the characters/concepts more viscerally than just showing them to you. This short shows us how a blind girl might “see” and experience the world around her; we are left with the same clues she is- the sounds, smells, and feelings- and are forced to make our own conclusions about her world just as if we too were blind. In that way, it tries to impart sone small aspect of what it is like to be blind. Another great example imo would be the song Bach (Again), in which a choir sings firstly a Bach chorale entitled “Come Sweet Death”, before repeating the chorale, but each singer sings at their own pace as they see fit, not following the tempo of any other singer nor the conductor. The result is an eery and elongated, stretching sound which slowly settles into a warm and fading final chord. Imo, it evokes in the listener the feeling of dying; time slowing to a standstill, colors blending and melting together, and finally fading away with a final release. I’m fascinated by this “empathetic media” I’d call it. I know I have seen other examples but can’t recall any right now. Anyone else know of any?

not to be rude or anything, but how did people not know she was blind throughout the entire video? The whole entire film's plot was about how she was blind and had to use her imagination and other senses to get around town!
@unidentifiederrors8 жыл бұрын
Her imagination is why people probably thought she wasn't blind. She once at least knew what stuff looked like. People who are actually blind couldn't imagine like that. So she lost her sight, wasn't born blind it seems. I was first confused too because she made up a world she shouldn't have been able to make up, it's really sad though that she had to lose her sight...

This entire piece reminds me of Studio Ghibli. Not only is this animation and coloring divine in how smooth and beautiful it was, but it was able to convey so many unique and well designed aspects that help tell the story of this one moment in that little girl's life. The flow was so well done, giving the viewer enough time to not only understand how the girl sees, but the process in which she does it. Not only that, but just the imagination put behind the visuals her mind creates, keeping in consideration her age and how the mind of a youth works, was beautifully executed. Even the designs of the characters themselves reflect so much on how Ghibli would have done it. The girl is simple in her design as well as cute and innocent. You can just tell from the very second her and her dog show up exactly who she is. The music is also very well done, keeping in pace with the story while also changing and shifting with not only the scene in front of us, but with how the girls mind perceives the world around her. These are amazing qualities to have, and though this animation is now nine years old, its execution from all areas makes it so this little short film is essentially timeless. I can see people ten years from now stumbling upon this piece and being able to enjoy it to the fullness of those who watched it the day it was released. Simply beautiful work

But please keep in mind: it's incredibly FRUSTRATING that most people see me as the disease and not the person. I'm literally just like any one of you. I've accepted my disability some time ago.
