Just watched the part about Lee taking the assistant coach position at Brisbane Broncos. I have mixed feelings about this: on a personal level, what a phenomenal achievement for a lad from a St. Helens council estate - I wish him every success. On the other hand, from the perspective of the game, I think this is a problem. The Australians have constantly been promoting the idea that the best of Super League should go over and test themselves in the NRL. Well they would, wouldn't they! But then look at the talent that was lost and never came back to our game. The likes of Sam Burgess and James Graham, and many others. I think we will, if we're not already, look back, and see this as a fatal weakness in our sport. We don't have endless talent in the game that we can afford to lose the likes of these players, and for it to have no impact. Jon was just saying last week, how we don't have any 'big stars' in the game right now, as we did with the likes of Jason Robinson. On the flip side, you could argue that these are the people that bring the new players in, because they can get inspired by this as a potential trajectory, and I think there's some merit to that. But on balance, I think it's had a negative impact on the sport in England, and the Australians will always do what's best for them, not what's best for the sport as a whole. To see this happen with coaches too, isn't a good sign for the game. But again, great for Lee, and I'm really pleased for him as an individual - a guy who has dedicated his life to rugby, and deserves every success.

@@kevinworrall231 can’t wait!!! This interview has been absolutely fascinating. It’s these kinds of interviews that make me wish that I had been able to watch Rugby League since the 90s. The people, the players are amazing.

Lee's the best half-back not to have made his mark at international level. The call for 'Briers for Britain' was deafening at the time, but was Brian Noble's greatest blindspot. Fascinating insight into Lee's history, that I deeply resonate with. Great ambassador of the game, and glad he's someone whose talents we've retained in the game. I think this podcast is doing a great job in terms of mental health: having tough, hard men, who have been at the pinnacle of their sport, be open, honest and vulnerable with their experiences, is an endorsement to younger players, that self-understanding and reflection isn't a sign of weakness, but a sign of strength. This is important - it's modelling behaviour that the next generation can emulate. That's a great contribution to the sport, thanks guys.

Wrote a piece in the south wales echo back in 2001. Saying instead of the Welsh rugby union scouring new Zealand for players with dubious Welsh relatives. Just pop across the border to Warrington and sign Lee Briers. He would have been one of the greatest outside half in history. Absolute genius and what a Miss for Wales
