Rev Gary Davis was actually a pretty fine 5-string banjo player in a frailing style. Unfortunately, almost no one bothered to ask him to play and he did not apparently want to advance himself as such a player, In the eternally forthcoming second volume of Folkways Black Banjo Songsters we have one banjo section that he gave at a folk concert in Central Park in the 1960s as well as another recording made at a folk club in San Diego where the Rev was performing where a banjo was sitting around while Davis was there and picked it up, He made a number of recordings using a 6-six string guitar banjo of ragtime pieces, all using the 2 finger style even though I for years thought it had to be 3 finger to do that much.

Thanks for the info, Tony! Man, I would love to hear more of the Rev. on the ole 5 string. Also, I'm with you on the 2 vs. 3 fingers. I've always heard that he only used two fingers but anytime I sit down and try to copy some of his licks, I've got to use three fingers to even get close. He was a treasure...
