I was struggling enough with going from C to F. Struggling enough with the pain of holding C for so long. And then you get legit real fancy at the end 😐😑🤣 I dream that in 9 years I’ll be as good as you are in these 9-yr old videos 🫣🫣

Question....if you are playing in the key of c why not just tune banjo to double c and capo to d for if you play with a fiddler?
@PlayBetterBanjoАй бұрын
In this vid, I'm playing the tune as I learned it from J.D. Wilkes. He played it in the key of C out of the open G tuning. If one wanted to play this tune with a fiddler or some other instrumentalist in the key of D, either approach (open G tuning capoed 2nd OR double C capoed 2nd) could work. Whether or not to use a certain tuning / capo combo to for a tune/song is a question that rarely has only one correct answer. The choice is, ultimately, yours to make . Seasoned players and arrangers (through a whole lot of experimentation and trial & error) learn to decide which tunings/approaches work best for a particular musical context.... Hope that helps!

Absolutely lovely and wholesome. 💖But, aren't those strings real slack? I only ever played steel-strung banjo, so I don't know about the normal tension on nylon strings - and I'm just assuming those top 3 strings are nylon due to the sound and that they look thicker than the lower one. Or, have you tuned the instrument lower than normal to suit your natural vocal range? - which is absolutely legit.
@PlayBetterBanjo4 ай бұрын
Yes, I'm using nylon strings in this vid. Particularly, I'm using the Aguilla brand 'minstrel banjo' strings. They're low tuned to on open D (relative to the common open G banjo tuning of today)...

The song was written about what is now called Germantown Tennessee which Noah Lewis who did the vocal, and a terrific harmonica solo that is the main feature of the recording frequented. All of Lewis's songs were in G, whereas Cannon preferred C.. People called Germantown "German." Germantown was named after its surveyor and developer a man named German, not after any Germans living there. Someone at Victor Records, perhaps Ralph Peer himself, not knowledgeable of the local argot, changed it to going to Germany. It's a Noah Lewis tune and like almost all of them in G. Cannon believed as SS Steward did in tuning the banjo in drop C tuning. To play in G sometimes Cannon raised the 4th string to D to play a song in G. Sometimes he did not!

It's up to you to decide which strings to strike throughout a chord progression. If you're holding a full chord with your fretting hand, then any string that you strike will work, musically-speaking.

This is a fantastic walk through. I have wanted to learn this tune for a long time. Thank you for making that happen. Can anyone tell me how to interpret measures 12 and 20? I'm not sure what that notation means.
@PlayBetterBanjo8 ай бұрын
The most practical explanation I can give is: Simply execute a downstroke/brush on beats 1 , 2, and 4 of the measure, letting the notes sounded on beat 2 ring out until you strike on beat 4. Hope that helps.
