Can you give the rundown on the whole rig (rod, reel, line, etc.)?

Hey Norm, love the channel, thanks for all the info. Just looking back at this video as I am in the market to get a Shadow X. I am wondering if the 2wt can handle casting a heavy nymph, like a single #8 stonefly with a 4.5mm bead? Most of my fishing is done in places with fish less than 14" and using light tippet (6x, sometimes 7x), but there is the occasional deep pocket or undercut where I need to toss a heavier bug to convince a bigger fish to eat. Would love to hear your thoughts! Thanks again!

I bet if you tried a very slim perdigon with a 3.5-4mm bead, it will get down even faster than the bulky stone, and be easier to cast.

Great video Norm! Does the 10'6" 3 wt have a little softer action than the 10' 3wt? Does it also have more tippet protection with 7x and 8x? I handled the 10' 3wt today at a local fly shop and it felt a bit fast for my particular taste, so just wondering of the 10'6" 3wt would be a better choice for me. Thanks man!

The longer rods definitely have softer tips and much better tippet protection.

What length Shadow X rod would you choose as an all around rod for euro-nymphing, throwing dries, dry-dropper, and light streamers. I’m in Montana and mostly fish Rock Creek, Blackfoot, and Bitterroot. I’m leaning towards the 11’ but wonder if the shorter rods would be better all-around rods? I have a 9’#5 that is a good all around rod except for euro-nymphing.

bstiehl I lean toward the 10’6” 3wt for my all around stick. I have the versatility to fish all the techniques you mentioned. The 10 footer has a bit more back bone to allow better adaptation to dry dropper, streamers & longer casts but you comprise tippet protection in the sub 6x diameters. However, if your not concerned about fishing tippet in that size range the 10’ 3wt has a wider range. Hope that helps & Thanks for watching.

Hi Norm. What floating line would you recommend for the 3100 for dry fly fishing? True to weight like a SA Trout or heavier/short head like the SA Trout Creek? Thanks

Is the 3106 ok to fish the San Juan? Never fished that light a rod up there!!
@NMaktimaFlyFishing5 жыл бұрын
yes, it will do the job. Adjusting your fighting technique is a necessity, as you will need to focus pressure and power from the butt section of the rod, to deal with bigger fish. I've land many big fish on this rod quickly.

Strongly considering getting a Shadow X, but could you help me out with a little breakdown of the benefits / drawbacks of the 2wt vs 3 wt? I am new to the Euro game and want to make the right choice!

Charles Pierson Glad your interested in shadow X. The 2wt is the best at tippet protection in the 6-7x tippet range. The 3wts in the 10’6” & 11’ lengths have good tippet protection but with added reach for and more back bone to fight bigger fish with confidence. The 10’6” is my go to rod, as I can Euro Nymph, but can also be versatile & switch to dries, dry/dropper and even fish smaller streamers. The reach allows me to carry the drift out further from me. If majority of the time your fishing light tippets, the 2 would benefit (worth noting you can fish a dry & dropper too). But for more versatility the 10’6” is my fav.

@@NMaktimaFlyFishing Awesome thanks for the guidance! Also, it is just dawning on me that i'm pretty sure you told me all about fishing in NM when I stopped in at High Desert Angler when I was visiting Santa Fe in February. Hopefully I'll be able to get back out to NM ASAP!

What net are you using in this video?
@NMaktimaFlyFishing5 жыл бұрын
That net I picked up while at the World Championships in Slovenia....& honestly I don't remember the company. There are other similar nets now...I think Tactical Fly Fishers has these types of nets. They are light weight with a big hoop for easy landing. Snowbee is another net company that has a similar net. Hope that helps & thanks for watching!
