In general Sector Education and Training Authorities are a scam and burden on the tax payers. eg Construction Seta wasted R79.8m. Transport SETA lost ~R200m with Fidentia instead of using it for training - too many cases to list - just cancel the tax collection and give it to employees.

NSFAS is much of the same. The SIU had to investigate to come to the conclusion that NSFAS had no close-out accounting procedure to account for excess NSFAS funds held by universities and TVET colleges since 2016. The SIU only had to ask for the universities and TVETs to return a combined R1.2 billion (I believe with some payments yet to be made). By my calculation that's about 17 700 lost academic years. How is it that NSFAS had these capabilities before but not now? One has to wonder if they were hollowed out intentionally in preparation for the chaos and likely corruption that was the new student funding model. One has to wonder if and how much interest was earned by universities and TVETs holding on to this money. One has to wonder where thousands of scholars who were deserving and needy eventually ended up because NSFAS couldn't be bothered to ask for its money back.

Ewseta student/apprentice here with Eskom: Distribution & we experiencing something similar. what seems to be happening is, funds keep going missing(designated for our cbmt level training) & our contracts keep getting extended well beyond normal duration(3 years to 5 years at least).
