Jack Out The Back

Күн бұрын

Join Tim and Jack on an exhilarating outback aircraft adventure as they set out to retrieve the Savannah plane with a malfunctioning oil pressure sensor. Witness their journey to pick up the plane using the car trailer, braving the challenges of remote transport and battling relentless flies. While installing a new sensor, they experiment with various insect repellants in a humorous quest to keep the pests at bay. Unsurprisingly, it's Tom who ultimately resolves the issue, showcasing the importance of teamwork. Jack reflects on the reliability of the 912 Rotax engine and anticipates the performance of the new 915 iS engines in future planes.

The first step to repair this should have been to turn off the magnetos (if not possible remove plug leads) and spin the engine over with the pressure sender out. You instantly know if oil is spurting or not. Starting the engine multiple times with the possibility of a failed pump would mean an expensive early rebuild. Then the sender is fitted, and external test wiring used to verify correct wiring for the gauge. Then it can be finish installed without angst.

Unfortunately not everyone up here has cameras rolling all the time, so the first part of the diagnostics wasn't recorded (the checks in the field) where it was confirmed that the oil pump was working, the only question was if it was an intermittent issue.

A mechanical gauge would have been fool proof, that is what I used on my old 1970 351C Mustang during the years I was Racing it. I sold the Mustang after 30 years and bought a Europa Monowheel 914, and now I have a electric sender like you, thats progress eh? Glad you are sorted out & greetings from Canada!

Jack, Ant. With regards to Insect repellent, when over on the west coast of Scotland there’s the greatly feared Midge 🦟. So we used Stuff called “Jungle Formula” two variants the original (75% DEET 25% Denatured ethanol) and extra strength (50%DEET, Cyclopentasiloxane, Quatermium-90Bentonite, Titanium Dioxide, Cetearyl Isonanoate, Isononyl Isonanoate, Dimethicone, Steareth 2, Phenoxyethanol, Propylene Carbonate, Parfume. The only problem was it used to dissolve the strings on our bows.🏹, not exactly what you want happening on your 60lb Compound bow. So we started using what the locals on the Isles of Skye use. Avon,s Skin So Soft dry oil body spray ( the original recipe) it’s works great and you smell nice to.👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Looked a bit frustrating sorting out the gauge issue, but good it was sorted in the end. Always found Bushman’s to work ok. Doesn’t look look like it works to well out there.

You shouldn't have to change the gauge if it was the sensor that failed. They are kind of matched as far as the range and output type, but they are not matched as in a matched pair of serial numbers. It just needs to be the correct range for your guage (usually 0-10bar) and correct thred (usually 1/8 npt)

Pesky flies seem to get used to repellent, they disappear for a bit, ònly to return. Wear a simple fly net... from a camping store. Mozzies & biting insects ... ive tried so many brands, tropical strength deet, but i wasnt game to put it on my skin, so would put it on my clothes, shoulders, outer shirt collar. Ive tried so many brands, some more 'natural' less harmful potentially work ok but need to be re-applied. (MOOV, Thursday Island repellent) Areoguard spray on clothing, Rid was another, but use might need caution. With bad reactions of mozzies & midgie bites, just have to use a fly net, & use a variety of repellents....plus Vitamin B1, Vegemite... Good outcome fixing the plane, but finding a one off deterrent for flies, less likely 😂

Disconnect trailer temporarily from vehicle. Attach tow strap between aircraft and vehicle. Pull aircraft onto trailer. Re attach trailer to vehicle.

Yeah that would work, we could have used the chocks to stop the trailer rolling, and lifted the front up with the blocks to get the height.

You CAN'T rely on new parts being good. Put a complete ignition system in a car once and couldn't get it to run. 6 mechanics were stumped! Finally traced to points. They tested OK but couldn't carry the current needed for the coil. Even Bosch the makers were stumped on that one. Ahh, 80s electrics! So new parts can be faulty and catch you out. Thought your sender might not have been earthing as that's a known problem. Good to see you sorted out.

Fit a mechanic oil pressure Guage, clear hose to Guage like old cars to physically check oil being moved by pump (test kit ) Another way to test sender is a multimeter Oil pressure closes the switch and earth's it out (usually) So multimeter on signal turned to ohms (should be open circuit) other probe earth out on battery earth Crank engine if producing oil pressure multimeter will go closed circuit and give an ohms/resistance reading

You should add a 12 volt 3500 pound winch with a remote control on the front of the Trailer. You could use 2 - 2” X 6” boards about 4 foot long as ramps and just winch it on.

G'day fella's. If you screwed a 45 degree m & f fitting into the crankcase you could get better access to the sender. If you had a tap and die set you could use a tap to carefully match the thread internally and you use a die for external threads. Very handy tool's. What a magic little machine. When they say " not to rub on body hole" . That'd make you whistle.
