I am replacing the thermostat on my 1991 Evinrude 30hp. The motor would not get to operating temperature. When I change the thermostat I could see way. The thermostat would not close all the way or open all the way. That was probably a good thing for me.

thank you! I think you saved me a ton of frustration. I am working on a Mercury Mariner 60HP Bigfoot.. no pee... changed the entire W/pump and lots of pee.. but my alarms still goes off. Before i ran it i "thought i checked the thermostat... but i didn't know what to look for. It "looked larger" so i assumed it was "open".... so i ran it on the lake for a few minutes and the OVERheating alarm was constant. NOW i think I figured it out. I never looked to see the top part of the thermostat pop out- ie. "open" i ASSUMED since it got larger it was "open"! OK, now i will check it out the right way! Great video... i also like the one where you walk through how the water flows... GREAT! thanks.

I have a 1985 with some fairly rusty bolts and I am worried about pulling cover. What would you think of drilling a small hole next to it so that a flushing liquid could enter easily into the jacket. Clean flush it well and then just plug up the hole.

What manual are you using for torque specifications. I have an evinrude 6hp. Runs at slow speed but when you go full it wants to shut off. Then when you stop. I have to wait about an hour before it will start again. Do you have any ideas what could be causing that. Its a e6rcud. 1987

I am using the Clymer Evinrude/Johnson Outboard Shop Manual. If that was my motor I would get the shop manual and start with fuel make sure the carburetor was clean all three parts low speed, intermediate and high speed. Make sure the fuel pump is working properly. Some times I set my fuel tank higher then the motor so the fuel pump does not have to draw much. Are you sure the fuel is ethanol free. I know that the electrical system is the weakest link. Does it get spark to the spark plugs when the engine is hot and don't want to start, is it getting fuel. My thought is if it will not rev up it is a fuel issues. If the Carburetor float is not set correct that can cause this too. Just take one part at a time and make sure it is set right. Thanks for watching and Stay Safe.

Hi like the videos! Can you tell me if a broken thermostat would cause an engine to not start? I have a Yamaha Malta that has spark and fuel so I’m exploring all possibilities
@OmFishing
@OmFishing 4 жыл бұрын
If the thermostat was broken or missing the engine would not reach operating temperature. Which would cause the engine to carbon up from not burning clean. I don't think it would get to the point that the engine would not start but it could cause it to run ruff.

Not so fast I know it can be aggravating, but it is just something little stopping it from running. Make sure you have your float set right. I had one every time it started to go up on plane the engine would go back to idle. Turns out the the float was not set right and when the bow went up it shut off the gas and when the bow went back down the engine would rev back up.

HI from Montreal Canada. What problem the motor could have if I do not install a thermostat? I already had several issues because the thermostat gets block. Here in Canada, we use the boat for just 3 months and after it is inverted.
@OmFishing

Proper engine temperature is important because, if the outboard runs to cool. 1.Foul spark plugs 2. Poor idle 3.Loss of wide open throttle speed 4.excessive fuel comsumption 5.excessive carbon deposits in the combustion chamber.

@OmFishing
@OmFishing 6 жыл бұрын
When I was checking the timing the motor never felt no more then warm. Maybe warm like 70 to 80 degrees. The motor should have been around 140 degrees on the top of the head by the flywheel. If the temperature is under 125 degrees the engine is over cooling. If the temperature is over 163 degrees the engine is under cooling.

I just got an 1985 Evinrude 30 running that has been sitting for about 15 years. I replaced the water pump and had to clean up the throttle linkage because it was all gummed up from old grease. Tiller steer. It started alright but it blows water out of the pee hole as it should but also out the exhaust holes in the mid section. Did I do something wrong in water pump rebuild?

Nice videos, hay I have a 60 hrs johnson and my bottom plug and cylinder is foiling out and , took plugs out and and bottom cylinder seems to be getting to much gas. I'm getting plenty of spark. I cleaned carburetors put in new floats. It speeds up when I have the throttle at idle at low, when running it seems that it flooding, when I'm revving the engine at high speed idle or throw it in foward gear at and add more power to throttle it seems to bogg out. I cleaned the carbs as well .

I've replace the water pump on a johnson 6hp. Did a pump test with a drill spinning the shafts before I put the lower leg back in and it pumps water.now that I have it back on water is not coming out. Watched your video and had the idea that it might be the thermostat. Took the cover off and only the top part of the thermostat is in there. No spring or anything. I've blowed all the water holes out even took the lower leg back off and blew it out from that end and put it back together but it still doesn't have water coming out.. does it have to have taken thermostat in it time make the water circulate or am I missing something. Thanks

Does steam come out of the motor when it’s hot? If so, take a look at the passages inside the engine. If it’s run in salt water it might have the passages blocked by corrosion in and around the cylinder and head. Also, the passage from the powerhead to the lower leg might be blocked. If all else fails you might be looking at removing the powerhead to get at the problem. Simple things first - always.

My tempature alarm keeps going off at idle....changed thermostat and put earmuffs on it still was overheating....do you think thermostat is stuck closed...if so how can I open it?
@OmFishing
@OmFishing 5 жыл бұрын
That is possible that the thermostat needs change. Does it over heat when the motor is in the water. Some motors just don't do well on the earmuffs. Try it in a tank or back it in the water first. If it still over heats I would change it then. Stay safe.
@BUBS_HD
@BUBS_HD 5 жыл бұрын
It could be a bad water pump. Personally I think muffs are a bad way to test a motor because it forces water through the motor regardless. Tank testing is the way to go. You can use anything, a garbage can or a plastic tote, just as long as you can keep enough water in it. Good luck🖒

Malcolm Robertson The engine would run cold. The cylinder block would stay cold but the pistons would get hot and expand which would cause issues with regard to piston cylinder clearances. The engine would not run well because engines must come up to working temperature.

@fleetwin1
@fleetwin1 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that is a lousy design for sure. Having to pull off that whole water cover just means techs are less likely to go through the trouble to check/replace the thermostat. Cleaning those threads is a great idea, especially in salt water. Add gasket sealer to the threads of the bolts also to ensure the bolts will never get corroded in place. It is important to clean the head surface under the thermostat gasket/seal to ensure the thermostat seals on the head and water can't seep by at lower speeds. These 32CI engines are cold blooded for sure, and won't run worth a darn with an open/missing thermostat. Many people just remove the thermostat which is a BIG mistake, the thermostat must be in place to ensure water flow is properly controlled and to avoid possible "hot spots". When I see an engine with the thermostat removed, I know there are other cooling problems that have been overlooked. Removing the thermostat to solve cooling issues is just a "band aid" which will backfire down the road.....Thanks for showing the viewers this important servicing issue, especially for salt water use.
