Outburst for Unaccompanied Alto Saxophone, performed by Michael Hanna at my Master's Composition Recital in 2018.
Program Notes:
Inspired by Eddie Van Halen’s Eruption, this unaccompanied solo for alto saxophone sets out to quickly and efficiently punch the listener in the face, exploring the different ranges, colors, and extended techniques of the saxophone in the process. Special thanks to Michael Hanna for assisting in the creation of this piece, and for teaching me all of the strange, interesting, and unusual sounds that the saxophone can make!

Surprisingly good cohesion of the line. Saxophonists have a tendency to play different parts of their range like different instruments, making a cohesive line impossible. This performer’s lines sounded musical through all the ranges, like the single instrument it is. Very well played. Even when the fingers may have gotten twisted a bit, it didn’t matter at all, because the lines were still consistent and the musical thread was never dropped. That’s excellent playing, which I respect regardless of the style of the piece. As a result I found the piece moving and worthy of the time spent listening! Great job all around!

I just bought this from Murphy Press. Sean Murphy was kind enough to send it electronically so I could save the shipping cost to Canada. I have to say, it isn’t an easy piece and don’t know I’ll ever progress enough to learn it, having started saxophone rather late in life. I’m not sure if this was Chris Hass’ intention but here’s my view on Outburst. I hear the relentless pressure of impending deadlines, everything needing to be faster. Even when the piece ‘resets’ to a more moderate tempo, it quickly becomes stressed once again. This would be a great piece to play at my retirement in a few years….*if* I can ever learn it!

@@saiyankohi2399 for me it was mostly tongue position, I always kept mine too low and too much forward if that makes sense. Try to lift your tongue and move it back so the path for the air is "tighter" so it travels faster. Instantly got me from high F# (my sax doesn't have the "new" F# key) to high D, now even D# and E.
